This study was performed that how phonophoresis using ultrasound for piroxicam affects transdermal permeation and anti-inflammative effects. Transdermal permeation study conducted by using hairless mouse had two categories: control group and ultrasound group. Transdermal permeation was observed according to duty cycle and intensity. Anti-inflammatory effects were determined using in Sprague-Dawley rat. The subjects were divided into three groups of six SD rat each 24 hour, 48 hour, 72 hour. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Transdermal permeation of piroxicam was measured according to ultrasound duty cycle. This research demonstrates that ultrasound group retains more transdermal permeation than control group, and that pulsed ultrasound group holds a little more transdermal permeation than continuous ultrasound group. 2. The transdermal permeation of piroxicam is closely related with ultrasound intensity. Effect of each group of transdermal permeation was significant rises in proportion to ultrasound intensity. 3. By observing inflammation of the tissue caused by trauma, phonophoresis group showed more significant of anti-inflammatory effect. The conclusion of phonophoresis was found to improve significantly the transdermal permeation and the anti-inflammatory effect.
Ultrasound has been found useful as a therapeutic modality for the reduction of muscular and tendinous spasm. It has also been utilized for pain and other pathologic conditions through the ability of soundwaves to introduce molecules of chemical substances through the skin by a process. Choice of the transmission medium is very important for effective ultrasound treatment in clinical field. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of various ultrasound conduction media in regard to ultrasound conductivity and degree of absorption, evaporation and of skin irritation. The media used in this study were Antiphlamine, Sacch lotion, Stereogel, Trastgel, Antiphlamine S lotion, and Mentholatum lotion that have been used in clinical medicine. The study revealed that Antiphlamine was not compatible with a good ultrasound transmitter. Other media excluding Antiphlamine were compatible with a good ultrasound conductor, but they had some drawback with their nature of higher absorption, evaporation and skin irritation. The medium that was prepared by mixing of Antiphlamine with Gel in 1 to 10 ratio was a good ultrasound transmitter and extents of absorption and evaporation and of skin irritation of it were less than the other media.

With subcutaneous. gel was no temperature change. glycerin was significant temperature change in 2minutes(p<.05), 5minutes(p<.05), 10minutes(p<.01). distilled water was no temperature change. With muscle. gel was no temperature change. glycerin was significant temperature change in 2minutes(p<.05). 5minutes(p<.05). 7minutes(p<.05). 10minutes( p<.05). distilled water was significant temperature change in 10minutes(p<.05). 2. Superficial heats of skin and subcutaneous was higher temperature change than Deep heats of muscle. 3. Gel. glycerin. distilled Water required minimum treatment 10minutes fur thermal effect. 4. Gel was low temperature change superficial and deep heats. and glycerin was high temperature change superficial and deep heats. This results show that gel is high transmissiveness in the coupling media and glycerin is low transmissiveness in the coupling media.
To probe the temperature elevation effect caused by ultrasound, a tissue mimicking phantom was newly suggested. A carrageenan gel was adopted to realize not only the required transparency for visualization but also acoustic characteristics similar to human tissue. To visualize the temperature elevation inside phantom, thermochromic film with a critical temperature of discoloration was introduced. Acoustic characteristics of the tissue mimicking phantom were examined when the concentrations of carrageenan and sucrose changed. As the results, the attenuation coefficient of the phantom could be controlled in the range of 0.44~0.49 dB/cm/MHz, and the acoustic impedance in the range of 1.52~1.77 Mrayls. We could control the acoustic characteristics of the phantom by different concentration of carrageenan and sucrose, and it was possible to examine the temperature elevation caused by ultrasound in the phantom. The suggested method was verified by noninvasively visualizing the temperature elevation due to planar and focused ultrasound using the fabricated phantom.

Functional cosmetics containing various ingredients that improve skin health are currently being developed. In addition, technologies that help increase the absorption rate of such cosmetics have recently gained significant attention. Sonophoresis is a method to increase the transdermal absorption of cosmetics using ultrasound. A skin-mimicking phantom was fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane, Strat-MTM membrane, and thermochromic pigments. Gel-type cosmetics used in skin mask packs and epidermal-growth-factor-based nano-cosmetics were tested for their absorption rates at ultrasound frequencies of 1, 3, and 10 MHz in the single frequency mode, and 1/3 and 3/10 MHz in the dual frequency mode. The gel-type cosmetics and epidermal-grow-factor-based nano-cosmetics showed the highest absorption rate at 3/10MHz dual frequency. The size of the cosmetic particles decreased by 5-9 %. Furthermore, the temperature rise caused by ultrasound could be visually recognized by the thermochromic pigment in the phantom turning white. We presented a skin-mimicking phantom. The device can be customized according to the size of the ultrasound probe and has the advantage of quantitatively evaluating the transdermal permeability of cosmetics at a low cost. The development of the skin-mimicking phantom will be useful for determining the suitable conditions required to increase the absorption rate of cosmetics using ultrasound.
Objective : Sono-acupoint (SA) therapy is a new therapeutic technique that combined with acupuncture points, herbal medicine and ultrasound therapy. This study was carried out to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of sono-acupoint therapy. Methods : We performed the tail-flick test with normal rats to examine the tail-flick latency (TFL), and the Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis rat model to examine the edema, skin temperature and serum concentration of c-reactive protein and rheumatoid factor (RF). Herbal SA (HSA) treatment was performed at bilateral Zusanli (ST36) with the hanbang-gel made of several selected herbal drugs in Sprague-Dawley rats (male, $250{\pm}30g$). General SA (GSA) treatment was performed at bilateral Zusanli (ST36) with the gel used in ultrasound therapy. In arthritis rat model, Freund's adjuvant (50mg/ml) was injected in dorsal part of right foot, and these treatments were performed after 15 days. Results : TFL was lengthened after SA treatments. Skin temperature and RF concentration that were the evidence of arthritis in rats were decreased by HSA treatment (P < 0.05). Conclusion : These results indicate that HSA has the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in rats, and further developments will produce the advance of this new therapeutic skill.

Response Surface Methodology was applied for optimizing the processing parameters of ultrasound treatment in order to produce low-molecular alginate. The use of ultrasound significantly reduced viscosity of alginate solutions. Suggested parameters of ultrasound treatment for maximum reduction of alginate molecular weight were: specific intensity, 115.81 $W/cm^2$ at 20kHz frequency; treatment time, 35.55 min; temperature, $20.08^{\circ}C$; alginate concentration, $2.5\%$. Low-molecular alginate obtained by ultrasound had two peaks on Sepharose CL-6B gel filtration. The viscosities of control, fraction I, and fraction II at $0.1\%$ concentration and $25^{\circ}C$ were 3.07, 1.23, and 0.82cps, respectively. Molecular weights of control, fraction I, and fraction II alginates were 336,500, 70,400, and 52,800 daltons, and their solubilities were 3, 6, and $14\%$, respectively. The lower molecular weight of alginate, the lower the alcohol precipitation and the higher $Ca^{2+}$ ion binding capacities. Heavy metal ion binding capacities of alginates were high in the following order of Pb, Cd, Zn, and Co.
In this study, by combining a unique purpose and additional aspects of ultrasonic transmission media, a development potential on a new ultrasonic transmission media was sought. The rheological characteristics and the manufacturing cost for each manufactured formulation were compared and analysed with ready-made. An ultrasonic transmission media is to have different functional characteristics according to the following formulation, it was the best in rheological value, low viscosity emulsion with the oil gel. Polymer hydro gel is can be manufactured at low cost compared to other formulations. Emulsion which shows a sharp viscosity difference according to the components of oil and water had a big difference in manufacturing cost. This study can be utilized as the fundamental data on the ultrasound transmission media equipped with expertise in various areas of ultrasound.
