  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe and identify the relationship between gait and contracted ratios of the transverse abdominal (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles. Methods: This study was conducted on 50 elderly people. The contracted ratios of the lateral abdominal muscles (LAM) were measured using the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) and ultrasonographic imaging. Gait was measured using the timed up and go test and the 10 m walk test. Results: The contracted ratios of the TrA and IO muscles significantly increased after ADIM. Those of the TrA muscles showed a significant correlation with gait in the limited community ambulatory group. The contracted ratios of the IO and EO muscles showed a significant correlation with gait in the community ambulatory group. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a specific training on the relationship between gait speed and the activation of the LAM in elderly people.

  • With the advancement of shoulder arthroscopy, use of biodegradable suture anchors in the surgical repair of rotator cuff tears has increased. Because of the radiolucency of these anchors, radiography is not appropriate for early detection of anchor failure. Ultrasonography is an advantageous modality in visualizing biodegradable, radiolucent anchors on a real-time basis without risk of radiation exposure. We report on two cases of displacement of a biodegradable suture anchor diagnosed on ultrasonography during the postoperative follow- up, which has not been previously reported. Because this displacement could be missed in the postoperative follow up ultrasonography, we describe the ultrasonographic features of the displaced biodegradable anchors. Surgeons and radiologists should pay special attention to the possibility of displacement of the suture anchor in patients who underwent rotator cuff repairs using suture anchors.

  • A clinical study of 37 cases with thyroid nodules, which were treated by surgical excision and confirmed pathologically at the Department of Surgery, Chonnam National University Medical School, from Dec. 1988 to Feb. 1990, was conducted and following results were obtained in ultrasonographic evaluation of thyroid nodules. 1) The thyroid adenoma were showed well-defined margin, homogenous internal echo and surrounding Halo, but thyroid cancer were showed ill-defined margin, inhomogenous internal echo and no surrounding Halo. 2) The sensitivity of high resoution ultrasonography compared with pathologic diagnosis to thyroid cancer was 87.5%, specificity 94.1%, accuracy 88%, false positive 5.88%, and negative 12.5%.

  • A 3-year-old, male Shih-tzu dog with clinical signs of dysuria and hematuria was brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Chonnam National University. The patient was suspected urolithiasis by history taking and clinical signs but urinary and urethra calculus was not found in the radiographic examination. Enlarged prostatic gland (29.0$\times$28.0 mm) and severe finding of cystitis was observed from the ultrasonographic examination. The dog was finally diagnosed as the secondary urethral obstruction by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Castration was performed to treatment of acute hyperplasia of prostatic gland and prostatic cysts. After 26 days of operation, the prostate was defined small, hypoechoic, symmetric and decreased size (18.5$\times$18.0mm) by ultrasonography and dysuria cured completely.

  • Cholelithiasis and choledolithiasis were diagnosed with serum chemistry, abdominal radiography and ultrasonography in a 2.0 kg, 10 year-old Yorkshire Terrier dog showing signs of anorexia, vomiting, iceterus and depression. In serum chemistry, the level of alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate transferase, total bilitrubin and direct bilirubin were elevated. On abdominal radiographs, focal lesions with increased radiopacity were seen in the hepatic region and the size of liver was increased. In ultrasonographic examination, it were seen that distension of gall bladder, hypercehoic change of liver, obstruction of cystic duct by calcult and calculi in the gall bladder. Cholecystectomy was undertaken and there were no complications after the operation.

  • A 13.5kg, 15-year-old male mongrel dog with anemia, anorexia, vomiting and abdominal distension was referred to the Veterinary Medical Center of the Tokyo University. Radiographic and ultrasonographic findings indicated primary splenic tumor. The tumor was located at body of the spleen, which was surgically removed by splenectomy. Histopathological examination of the mass revealed sarcoma type tumor derived from the mesenchymal origin. The patient was in good health after surgery but suddenly showed abdominal distension on the 3 months after. Radiographic findings indicated abdominal neoplasms. The 2nd operation was performed and removed the recurrent mast but suddenly died on the 4th day. Histopathological examination of the tumor was myxosarcoma.

  • In a 10-year old mixed dog, a $10{\times}10{\times}4$ cm mass was palpated around the left caudal thoracic mammary gland with abdomen expension. In hormonal assay, serum concentrate of progesterone was 0 pg/ml and serum concentrate of estradiol was 66.7 pg/ml. Radiological finding of the mammary gland showed higher density than that of soft tissue and ultrasonographic finding showed inhomogeneous in echogenicity. Light microscopic view of mammary gland showed neoplastic hyperplasia of epithelial and myoepithelial cells and showed some metaplastic lesion of these cells to cartilage or bone tissues with metastasis to the lung. This case was diagnosed as malignant mixed mammary tumor.

  • Prostatic length and height on sagittal images and prostatic width and height on transverse images were measured ultrasonographically to establish upper limit of the prostate in 45 dogs which were clinically healthy and sexuallly intact. Linear 5regression and correlatin analysis were performed between prostatic parameters(length and height on sagittal images & width and height on transverse images) and parameters related to body size(body weight, left kidney length) and age of the dogs. Prostatic parameters were significantly correlated with body size and age of the dogs. Maximum predicted values with body weight and age for prostatic parameters were determined based o the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the mean predicted values. Such values should be useful for the small animal clinicians in determining if the prostate gland is too large for a given body weight and age, and may contribute to clinicl signs.

  • A 13-year-old, spayed female, Yorkshire terrier was presented with a history of vomiting and diarrhea. Radiographic and ultrasonographic studies suggested rupture of right renal cyst. Left kidney had increased cortical echogenecity with indistinct corticomedullary junction on sonogram. Unilateral nephroureterectomy of right kidney was performed. Histopathologic examination of the resected renal mass confirmed a renal cystadenocarcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first case report of renal cystadenocarcinoma in a small breed dog in Korea.

  • A 52-year-old female patient presented with an 8-year history of progressively intense pain, cold sensitivity, and severe tenderness to palpation of the ulnar side of the tip of her right little finger. Subsequent diagnostic evaluation with ultrasonographic imaging revealed the presence of a glomus tumor in the tender area. Glomus tumors are benign, occurring in the vascular hamartomatous tubercles of the glomus body, which is a myoarterial apparatus typically found in the reticular dermis of the skin. Distal glomus tumors are relatively uncommon, and account for approximately 1% of all hand tumors. Most of them are located in the subungual area because of its high concentration of glomus bodies. We report a case of a glomus tumor with a typical triad of symptoms, yet with a rare location : on the pulp of the ulnar aspect of the distal phalanx of the right little finger.
