  • An ultrasonic motor is a motor which uses vibration -a type of elastic vibration- to obtain a driving force, which then drives the motor using friction. In this paper, mode conversion type - single resonance mode ultrasonic rotary motor that use langevin type ultrasonic vibrator was studied. This model was proposed for the first time by Japanese Kumada in 1985. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) of a stator and bidirectional driving characteristic of a rotor was newly obtained. The amplitude and phase of displacement and elliptical trajectory of beam was confirmed by FEA The fabricated motor was operated to clockwise and counterclockwise in 40.8 [kHz] and 44.2 [kHz] respectively. But bidirectional driving characteristics did not coincide each other.

  • When hot strip is trimmed in the side trimming process at the entry side of tandem cold rolling mill, due to bad quality of trimming face and burr, product quality(saw ear)becomes so bad that it causes drop of yield and claim from customers. Therefore, it was examined that applying ultrasonic vibration is an effective method to improve quality of strip trimming face and decrease burr magnitude by decreasing shear force acting between strip trimming face and knife in side trimming process of cold rolling.

  • Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(Ultrasonic-AFM) can be used to obtain images of the elastic properties of a subsurface and to evaluate the elastic properties by measuring the contact resonance frequency. When a tip is in contact with the sample, it is necessary to understand the cantilever behavior and the tip-sample interaction for the quantitative and reliable analysis. Therefore, precise analysis models that can accurately simulate the tip-sample contact are required; these can serve as good references for predicting the contact resonance frequency. In this study, modal analyses of the first four modes were performed to calculate the contact resonance frequency by using a spring model, and the deformed shapes of the cantilever were visualized at each mode. We presented the contact characteristics of the cantilever with a variety of contact conditions by applying the contact area, contact material thickness, and material properties as the parameters for the FEM analysis.

  • Considering biological safety, it is very important to measure acoustic power from ultrasonic array probe for diagnostic ultrasound imaging applications. In this paper, to measure acoustic power from each element on array probe for ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, we reconstruct and automate the acoustic power measurement system. The acoustic power from linear, phased and curved array were measured and analyzed. As a result of measurement, the effects caused by directivity of sound beam from curved array were founded. To remove these effects, we developed and applied the correction model. The proposed system is useful to evaluate characteristics of the acoustical output power of array probe.

  • Ultrasonic waves are used in various applications in multiple devices, sensors, and high-power machinery, such as processing machines, welders, and cleaners, because the acoustic vibration frequencies are above the human audible frequency range. In ultrasonic machining, electrical energy at a high frequency of 20 kHz or more is converted into mechanical vibration by a vibrator and an amplifier. This technique allows instantaneous separation between a tool and a workpiece during machining, machining by pulse impulse force at the time of re-contact and minimizes the minute elastic deformations of the workpiece and machine tools due to the cutting effect. The Al7075 alloy used in this study is a typical aluminum alloy with superior strength that is mainly used in aircrafts, automobiles, and sporting goods. To investigate the optimal conditions for machining aluminum alloy using ultrasonic vibration, the present experiment utilized the Taguchi orthogonal array method, and the coefficient of friction was analyzed using the characteristics of the Taguchi technique. In ultrasonic friction and abrasion tests, the changes in the friction coefficient were measured in the absence of ultrasonic vibrations and at 28 kHz and 40 kHz. As a result, the most considerable influence on the friction coefficient was found to be the normal load, and the frequency of ultrasonic vibrations increases, the coefficient of friction increases. It was thus confirmed that the amount of wear increases when ultrasonic vibration is applied.

  • Generally, burrs refer to projected parts remained on the edge after material had been processed. These burrs decrease the precision of part and cause many problems in part assembly. Burrs are undesirable projections of the material beyond the edge of the workpiece. A number of deburring processes have been developed such as barreling, brushing, chemical methods etc. But, there are a few publications in the area of applying ultrasonics to deburring. When ultrasonic vibration propagates in the liquid medium, a large number of bubbles are formed. These bubbles generate an extremely strong force, which removes burrs. Cavitations were used as a term to describe erosion of parts caused by the action of cavities in liquid. The object of this study is to analyze the effects of ultrasonic cavitation in deburring process. For this purpose, we introduce a new ultrasonic cavitation method with abrasive, which efficiently removes the burrs. Experimental parameters to verify the deburring effects of ultrasonic cavitations are ultrasonic power, amplitude, distant of the transducer from the workpiece, deburring time and abrasive. It has been shown that deburring with ultrasonic cavitation in water is effective to burrs.
