This paper firstly proposed high performance composite columns for cold-region infrastructures using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) Q960E. Then, 24 square UHPC-filled UHSS tubes (UHSTCs) at low temperatures of -80, -60, -30, and 30℃ were performed under axial loads. The key influencing parameters on axial compression performance of UHSS were studied, i.e., temperature level and UHSS-tube wall thickness (t). In addition, mechanical properties of Q960E at low temperatures were also studied. Test results revealed low temperatures improved the yield/ultimate strength of Q960E. Axial compression tests on UHSTCs revealed that the dropping environmental temperature increased the compression strength and stiffness, but compromised the ductility of UHSTCs; increasing t significantly increased the strength, stiffness, and ductility of UHSTCs. This study developed numerical and theoretical models to reproduce axial compression performances of UHSTCs at low temperatures. Validations against 24 tests proved that both two methods provided reasonable simulations on axial compression performance of UHSTCs. Finally, simplified theoretical models (STMs) and modified prediction equations in AISC 360, ACI 318, and Eurocode 4 were developed to estimate the axial load capacity of UHSTCs at low temperatures.
Ultra high strength concrete (UHSC) originally proposed by Richards and Cheyrezy (1995) composed of cement, silica fume, quartz sand, quartz powder, steel fibers, superplasticizer etc. Later, other ingredients such as fly ash, GGBS, metakaoline, copper slag, fine aggregate of different sizes have been added to original UHSC. In the present investigation, the combined effect of coarse aggregate (6mm - 10mm) and steel fibers (0.50%, 1.0% and 1.5%) has been studied on UHSC mixes to evaluate mechanical and fracture properties. Compressive strength, split tensile strength and modulus of elasticity were determined for the three UHSC mixes. Size dependent fracture energy was evaluated by using RILEM work of fracture and size independent fracture energy was evaluated by using (i) RILEM work of fracture with tail correction to load - deflection plot (ii) boundary effect method. The constitutive relationship between the residual stress carrying capacity (σ) and the corresponding crack opening (w) has been constructed in an inverse manner based on the concept of a non-linear hinge from the load-crack mouth opening plots of notched three-point bend beams. It was found that (i) the size independent fracture energy obtained by using above two approaches yielded similar value and (ii) tensile stress increases with the increase of % of fibers. These two fracture properties will be very much useful for the analysis of cracked concrete structural components.
To achieve lightweight design, research & development of various lightweighting technologies such as hydroforming are underway worldwide. In the case of hydroforming, application of ultra high strength steel is essential for weight reduction of the car. However, considering common high-strength carbon steel, it is not suitable to the actual hydroformed parts since the lack of formability. DP steel offers an outstanding combination of strength and formability as a result of their microstructure. DP steel has high strength and good formability but it's difficult to secure stable quality of welding section because of softening of weld section and chemical composition. Therefore, most of companies use LASER welding when making high strength tube. Electric resistance welding is excellent production method for steel tube manufacturing considering the productivity. Optimum electric resistance welding technology is needed to be developed for application of high strength hydroformed parts using DP steel. This study is comprehensive research & development from electric resistance welding to actual formabililty evaluation.
This study is aimed to draw a optimum combined fiber mix condition to improve spalling resistance and flowability of ultra high-strength concrete. As a result, W/B 12.5% concrete specimens were prevented spalling with PE0.05+ PP0.1, PE0.05+NY0.1 and W/B 12.5% concrete specimens were prevented spalling with all of combined organic fiber mix condition. But There is no significant influence of steel fiber under 5% volume ratios to prevent spalling. In the scope of this study, we suggest that condition of optimum volume ratio PE0.05+NY0.1 is to improve spalling resistance, flowability and residual compressive strength.
It is the study on the mechanical properties of the material when mixing hybrid fiber as steel and synthetic fiber to improve fire resistance and toughness of concrete. Finally, The purpose is to identify of mechanical properties of Hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Ultra High Strength Concrete such as flexural strength.
In this study, flowability and strength on ultra high performance concrete(UHPC) pre-mixed binders with fiber was investigated. The flow of UHPC with pre-mixed binders was higher than that of seperate mixing conditions. The UHPC using PVA fiber with high specific surface area showed a low flow compared to steel fiber. An pre-mixing method led to improved strength of UHPC and low deviation of specimens due to dispersion effect of each materials.
The effect of weldbond hybrid joining process on the mechanical behavior of single lap and L-tensile joints was investigated for the newly developed 1.2GPa grade ultra high strength TRIP(transformation induced plasticity) steel. In the case of single lap shear behavior, the weldbond joint of 1.2GPa TRIP steel showed lower maximum tensile load and elongation than that of the adhesive bonding only. It was considered to be due to the reduction of real adhesion area, which was caused by the degradation of adhesive near the spot weld, and the brittle fracture behavior of the spot weld joint. In the case of L-tensile behavior, however, the maximum tensile load of the weldbond joint of 1.2GPa TRIP steel was dramatically increased and the fracture mode was change to the base metal fracture which is desirable for the spot weld joint. These synergic effect of the weldbond hybrid joining process in 1.2GPa TRIP steel was considered to be due to the stress dissipation around the spot weld joint by the presence of adhesive which resulted in the change of crack propagation path.
High performance SFRC composed of mira-sized ultra fine particles is characterized by high strength, high ductility and excellent durability. therefore many researches about materials based on new composition like this are performed recently. many researchers have reported that adding steel fiber to concrete improved its tensile and flexural strength significantly. the main objective of this research is to examine the effect of adding steel fiber on the tensile strength of high performance SFRC. variables considered in this study are w/c ratio and fiber volume fraction.
This paper is to investigate the shrinkage properties of ultra high strength concrete(UHSC) incorporating $5\%$ of expansive additives(EA) along with $1\%$ of shrinkage reducing agent(SRA). UHSC subjected to steam curing and incorporated with steel fiber exhibited higher compressive strength than control UHSC by as much as50MPa at 7days, while at 28days, noticeable change in compressive strength was not observed between UHSC mixtures. Control UHSC subjected to steam curing had a $922{\times}10^6$ of autogenous shrinkage strain value, which was 6.7 times of drying shrinkage strain value at 42 days. The combination of EA and SRA resulted in a decrease in autogenous shrinkage by as much as half of control mixture. Steam curing contributed to the reduction of autogenous shrinkage by as much as $11\%$ compared with that of standard curing.
