This paper proposes a new distance estimation technique for indoor localization in ultra wideband (UWB) systems. The proposed technique is based on recurrent neural network (RNN), one of the deep learning methods. The RNN is known to be useful to deal with time series data, and since UWB signals can be seen as a time series data, RNN is employed in this paper. Specifically, the transmitted UWB signal passes through IEEE802.15.4a indoor channel model, and from the received signal, the RNN regressor is trained to estimate the distance from the transmitter to the receiver. To verify the performance of the trained RNN regressor, new received UWB signals are used and the conventional threshold based technique is also compared. For the performance measure, root mean square error (RMSE) is assessed. According to the computer simulation results, the proposed distance estimator is always much better than the conventional technique in all signal-to-noise ratios and distances between the transmitter and the receiver.

A frequency modulated ultra-wideband (FM-UWB) transmitter with a high-robust relaxation oscillator for subcarrier generation and a dual-path Ring VCO for RF FM is proposed, featuring low power and low complexity. A prototype 3.65-4.25 GHz FM-UWB transceiver employing the presented transmitter is fabricated in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS for short-range wireless data transmission. Experimental results show a bit error rate (BER) of $10^{-6}$ at a data rate of 12.5 kb/s with a communication distance of 60 cm is achieved and the power dissipation of 4.3 mW for the proposed transmitter is observed from a 1.8 V supply.

In this paper, a transmitter-based multipath processing and inter-channel interference (ICI) cancellation scheme for a ultra-wideband (UWB) spatial multiplexing (SM) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system is presented. It consists of taps delayed lines and zero-forcing (ZF) filters in the transmitter and correlators in the receiver. For a UWB SM MIMO system with N transmit antennas, M receive antennas, and Q resolvable multipath components, the BER performance of a linear transmit ZF scheme is analyzed in a log-normal fading channel and also compared with that of a receiver-based ICI rejection approach. It is found that when M ${\leq}$ N, the transmit ZF processing approach outperforms the ZF receiver while making the mobile units low-cost and low-power.

This paper describes a high data rate proximity transmitter design for high resolution smartphone-mirrored display applications. A 2 Gb/s transmitter is designed with a low transmission power of -70 dBm/MHz and a wide bandwidth of nearly 3 GHz. A digital pre-correction method is employed in the transmitter to mitigate the inter-symbol interference problem. A carrier-based digital pulse shaping and a reconfigurable digital envelope generation methods are employed for robust operation by utilizing 20 phases from a 2 GHz phase-locked loop. A 6.5-9.5 GHz transmitter implemented in 65 nm CMOS achieves the maximum data rate of 2 Gb/s, consuming only 7.6 mW from a 1 V supply.

In this paper, we propose an interference cancellation(IC) scheme using a partial Rake(PRAKE) combining in ultra-wideband(UWB) multipath fading channels. In this IC scheme, differently from the conventional transmitter model, which employs a guard interval between each frame, the guard interval is employed between each slot for estimating the multiple access interference(MAI). The UWB systems using the proposed IC scheme have little performance degradation without regard to the number of user, while the conventional UWB systems have a significant performance degradation according to the number of user. In order to reduce the receiver complexity, the PRAKE combining of post-canceled signal and the partial user IC scheme are also proposed.
There are several factors that disturb an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio propagation in an indoor environment such as path loss, shadowing and multipath fading. These factors directly affect the quality of the received signal. In this paper, we investigated the influence of the human body shadowing on UWB propagation based on measured wireless channel in an anechoic chamber. The characteristics of the UWB channel including the transmitter and the receiver antenna effects are acquired over the frequency bandwidth of 3${\sim}$11 GHz. The major factors such as the power delay profile (PDP), the angular power distribution (APD), the pulse distortion and the RMS delay spread caused by the human body shadowing are presented.

The paper proposes a distance estimation technique for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems using convolutional neural network (CNN). To estimate the distance from the transmitter and the receiver in the proposed method, 1 dimensional vector consisted of the magnitudes of the received samples is reshaped into a 2 dimensional matrix, and by using this matrix, the distance is estimated through the CNN regressor. The received signal for CNN training is generated by the UWB channel model in the IEEE 802.15.4a, and the CNN model is trained. Next, the received signal for CNN test is generated by filed experiments in indoor environments, and the distance estimation performance is verified. The proposed technique is also compared with the existing threshold based method. According to the results, the proposed CNN based technique is superior to the conventional method and specifically, the proposed method shows 0.6 m root mean square error (RMSE) at distance 10 m while the conventional technique shows much worse 1.6 m RMSE.

In this paper, we propose structures and power spectral densities of UWB radar transmitters of Short Range Automobile. While the conventional transmitters did not consider interferences from self and other automobiles, the proposed method of this paper can minimize interferences. First, we compare a structure of the proposed method with pulse train and pulse compression method. Then, by using mathematical analysis and computer simulations, we show that the proposed method is superior to others. Also we can set proper parameters in UWB radar's transmitter through the numerical method of mathematical results.

A 3-5 GHz UWB radar chip in 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process is presented in this paper. The UWB radar transceiver for surveillance and biometric applications adopts the equivalent time sampling architecture and 4-channel time interleaved samplers to relax the impractical sampling frequency and enhance the overall scanning time. The RF front end (RFFE) includes the wideband LNA and 4-way RF power splitter, and the analog signal processing part consists of the high speed track & hold (T&H) / sample & hold (S&H) and integrator. The interleaved timing clocks are generated using a delay locked loop. The UWB transmitter employs the digitally synthesized topology. The measured NF of RFFE is 9.5 dB in 3-5 GHz. And DLL timing resolution is 50 ps. The measured spectrum of UWB transmitter shows the center frequency within 3-5 GHz satisfying the FCC spectrum mask. The power consumption of receiver and transmitter are 106.5 mW and 57 mW at 1.5 V supply, respectively.

This work presents an Internet of Things (IoT) system for home energy management based on a custom-designed Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver that targets a generic and multi-standard control system. This control system enables the interoperability of heterogeneous devices: it integrates various sensor nodes based on ZigBee, EnOcean and UWB in the same middleware by utilizing an ad-hoc layer as an interface between the hardware and software. The paper presents as a first the design of the IR-UWB transceiver for a portable sensor node integrated with the middleware layer, and also describes the receiver connected to the control system. The custom-designed low-power transmitter on the sensor node is fabricated with 130 nm CMOS technology. It generates a signal with a 1.1 ns pulse width while consuming $39{\mu}W$ at 1 Mbps. The UWB sensor node with a temperature measurement capability consumes 5.31 mW, which is lower than the power level of state-of-the-art solutions for smart-home applications. The UWB hardware and software layers necessary to interface with the control system are verified in over-the-air measurements in an actual office environment. With the implementation of the presented sensor node and its integration in the energy management system, we demonstrate achievement of the broad flexibility demanded for IoT.
