  • We report on the growth mechanism of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) using ultra thin Ni catalysts and direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system. The CNTs were grown with -600 V bias to substrate electrode and catalyst thickness variation of 0.07 nm to 3 nm. The CNT density was reduced with catalyst thickness reduction and increased growth time. Cone like CNTs were grown with ultra thin Ni thickness, and it results from an etch of carbon network by reactive etchant species and continuous carbon precipitation on CNT walls. Vertically aligned sparse CNTs can be grown with ultra thin Ni catalyst.

  • NiCr thin films were fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering for applying to both the top electrode and absorption layer on Pb(Zr, Ti)O$_3$(PZT) thin films for infrared sensors. The rms roughness and resistivity of NiCr films prepared with Ni power of 80 W and Cr power of 50 W showed the most stable oxidation resistance after annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in oxygen ambient. The rms roughness and resistivity of NiCr films annealed at $V^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient were about 2$0\AA$ and $70 \mu$Ω-cm, respectively. As-deposited Ni/PZT/Pt and NiCr (Ni 80 W, Cr 50 W)/PZT/Pt structures showed well saturated hysteresis loops. However, in case of the samples annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient, only NiCr/PZT/Pt showed saturated loops having a remanent polarization of 20$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Ultra-thin NiCr films showed a possibility as a top electrode for infrared sensors.

  • Improved optical switching property of electrochromic nickel hydroxide/nickel glass thin film is reported. Nickel metal film was deposited on glass by e-beam evaporation before following electrochemical redox cycling to form nickel hydroxide for electrochromic activation. Without ITO (indium tin oxide) layer as electrical conductor, this electrode showed more rapid coloration rate than nickel hydroxide film on ITO substrate in the change of the electric voltage and optical transmittance. XPS analysis confirmed the existence of ultra-thin nickel metal layer (${\sim}10{\AA}$) between electrochemically grown nickel hydroxide and the glass substrate. It is concluded that the remained nickel metal nano-layer attribute to the conduction layer and the enhanced response time.

  • In this study, we developed an ultra-thin flexible printed circuit board(FPCB) using the sputtered flexible copper clad laminate. In order to enhance the adhesion between copper and polyimide substrate, a NiMoNb addition layer was applied. The mechanical durability and flexibility of the ultra-thin FPCB were characterized by stretching, twisting, bending fatigue test, and peel test. The stretching test reveals that the ultra-thin FPCB can be stretched up to 7% without failure. The twisting test shows that the ultra-thin FPCB can withstand an angle of up to $120^{\circ}$. In addition, the bending fatigue test shows that the FPCB can withstand 10,000 bending cycles. Numerical analysis of the stress and strain during stretching indicates the strain and the maximum von Mises stress of the ultra-thin FPCB are comparable to those of the conventional FPCB. Even though the ultra-thin FPCB shows slightly lower durability than the conventional FPCB, the ultra-thin FPCB has enough durability and robustness to apply in industry.

  • Annealing effects of exchange bias fields ($H_{2ex}$(top), $H_{lex}$ (bottom)) on composite type NiFe/[FeMn/Mn]$_{80}$/NiFe multilayers have been studied. Three samples with ultra-thin Mn inserted layers on glass/Ta(50 $\AA$)/NiFe(150 $\AA$)/[F $e_{53}$M $n_{47}$(1.25 $\AA$)/Mn(0 $\AA$, 0.11 $\AA$, 0.3 $\AA$)]$_{80}$/NiFe(90 $\AA$)/Ta(50 $\AA$) were prepared by ion beam sputtering. The average x-ray diffraction peak ratios NiFe(111) of FeMn (111) fcc textures for the Mn inserted total thicknesses of 0 $\AA$, 9 $\AA$, and 24 $\AA$ were about 0.65, 0.90, and 1.5, respectively. For the sample without Mn inserted layer, the $H_{2ex}$ of 260 Oe up to 300 $^{\circ}C$ disappeared at 350 $^{\circ}C$. For two multilayer samples with ultra-thin Mn layers of 0.11 $\AA$ and 0.3 $\AA$, the $H_{2exs}$ of 310 Oe and 180 Oe up to 300 $^{\circ}C$ endured of 215 Oe and 180 Oe at 350 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. The $H_{ex}$ (bottom)s of three samples decreased from 100 Oe to 70 Oe up to 250 $^{\circ}C$, while these values increased beyond 300 $^{\circ}C$. This observation can be attributed to less diffusive path of Mn atoms in bottom NiFe than top NiFe layer. The top and bottom coercive fields slightly varied about 5 Oe∼10 Oe. From these results, we could obtain the enhancement of exchange coupling intensity and thermal stability by an ultra-thin Mn inserted layer on NiFe/[FeMn/Mn]$_{80}$/NiFe Multilayers.

  • We prepared ultra thin film structure of Si(100)/ $SiO_2$(200 nm)/Ta(5 nm)/Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20/(l~15 nm)}$Ta(5 nm) using an inductively coupled plasma(ICP) helicon sputter. Magnetic properties and cross-sectional microstructures were investigated with a superconduction quantum interference device(SQUID) and a transmission electron microscope(TEM), respectively. We report that NiFe films of sub-3 nm thickness show the B$_{bulk}$ = 0 and B$_{surf}$=-3 ${\times}$ 10$^{-7}$(J/$m^2$). Moreover, Curie temperature may be lowered by decreasing thickness. Coercivity become larger as temperature decreased with 0.5 nm - thick Ta/NiFe interface intermixing. Our result implies that effective magnetic properties of magnetoelastic anisotropy, saturation magnetization, and coercivity may change abruptly in nano-thick films. Thus we should consider those abrupt changes in designing nano-devices such as MRAM applications.

  • Ni-CNT(Carbon Nanotubes) composite coating is often used for the surface treatment of mechanical/electronic devices to improve the properties of the Ni coating. For the Ni-CNT coating, the dispersion of CNT fibers is a critical process. In this study, ultrasonic treatment instead of the conventional ball milling was attempted as a dispersion method for the electroless Ni-CNT coating. SEM-EDX analysis was performed and contact angle, sheet resistance, and micro-hardness were measured. Results showed that the ultrasonic treatment was comparable to the ball milling, as a dispersion method, but the difference was negligible. However, combined ball milling and ultrasonic treatment(double treatment) showed much improved micro-hardness value, above 350Hv(close to the value obtained by the Ni-CNT electroplating). In addition, electroless Ni-CNT(double-treated) coatings formed on the thin Ni film deposited by the electroless plating(double coating) showed better mechanical properties. Thus, double treatment and double coating are suggested as an improved electroless Ni-CNT coating method.
