Aging and deterioration of existing steel structures necessitate the development of simple and efficient rehabilitation techniques. The current study investigates a methodology to enhance the flexural capacity of steel beams by bonding Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) sheets to their flanges. A heavy duty adhesive, tested in a previous study is used to bond the steel and the GFRP sheet. In addition to its ease of application, the GFRP sheet provides a protective layer that prevents future corrosion of the steel section. The study reports the results of bending tests conducted on a W-shaped steel beam before and after rehabilitation using GFRP sheets. Enhancement in the moment capacity of the beam due to bonding GFRP sheet is determined from the test results. A closed form analytical model that can predict the yield moment as well as the stresses induced in the adhesive and the GFRP sheets of rehabilitated steel beam is developed. A detailed finite element analysis for the tested specimens is also conducted in this paper. The steel web and flanges as well as the GFRP sheets are simulated using three-dimensional brick elements. The shear and peel stiffness of the adhesive are modeled as equivalent linear spring systems. The analytical and experimental results indicate that a significant enhancement in the ultimate capacity of the steel beam is achieved using the proposed technique. The finite element analysis is employed to describe in detail the profile of stresses and strains that develop in the rehabilitated steel beam.

This paper investigated structural behaviors of joint of concrete filled steel tube column and P.C reinforced concrete beam through a series of hysteretic behavior experiment. The results are summarised as follows: (1) The joint stiffness of concrete filled square steel tube column and P.C reinforecd beam was higher than that of concrete filled circular steel tube column and P.C reinforecd beam, and it was decreased as the increase of the number of hysteretic cycle. (2) The aspects of the hysteretic behavior in the joint was stable as the increase of the number of hysteretic cycle, and rotation resisting capacity of joint of concrete filled square steel tube column and P.C reinforced concrete beam was higher than those of the concrete filled circular steel tube column and P.C reinforced concrete beam. (3) Some restriction must be put upon the ratio of axial force in this joint model because the load carrying capacity was decreased by flexural and flexural-torsional buckling in case of the ratio of axial force 0.6. (4) The emprical formula to predict the ultimate capacity of joint model to superimpose shearing strength of steel web(H section) and bending strength of reinforced concrete beam was expected.

The flexural behavior of the reinforced concrete (RC) structure upgraded by external reinforcements was examined in this study. It is well known that the incorporation of carbon fiber sheet (CFS) with concrete is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the RC structure. Complete bonding is required between CFS and concrete in order to make the RC structure provide its full function until the time the Re structures serve. Many studies have reported that construction deficiencies have caused the debonding of the CFS from concrete before the RC structure with CFS reaches its ultimate capacity. This research took a systematic look at the failure mechanism, macroscopic load-deformation characteristics, the maximum load applied, and maximum bending moment when construction deficiencies exist. The results of the experiment conducted were compared with theoretically derived values. In the future, the results of this investigation will help minimize the factors of construction deficiencies, which may occur when CFS is used to reinforce a RC structure. The experiment was manipulated with steel reinforcement ratio and piles of CFS on a total of 14 beams ($20cm{\times}30cm{\times}240cm$). The results showed that internal moment capacity increased even when construction deficiencies existed. However, RC structures with CFS in the field still contain a considerable level of potential risks.
In this study, a bending test with three encased composite beams were carried out and analyzed using FEM in order to find how chemical adhesion, interface interlock, friction and composite action by shear studs contribute to stiffness, strength and composite action in the interface of encased compo site beams. The test and results of the FEM analysis showed that the difference in the ultimate moment capacity of the composite beams with and without studs is under 10%. The reason is that the effect of chemical adhesion, interface interlock, and friction in the interface on the composite action is so high that the encased beams have a moment capacity above some defined magnitude. Also, the increment of moment capacity up to plastic moment is not large and the increase of linearly proportioned.
One of the important use of piles is to furnish lateral support and nowadays it is getting highlighted due to the increase of skyscrapers, transmission towers, wind turbines, and other lateral action dependent structures. After Broms (1964), many researchers have suggested methods for estimating lateral capacity of pile. But each method assumes different earth pressure distribution and lateral earth pressure coefficient causing confusion on the part of pile designers. Lateral earth pressure, essential in lateral capacity estimation, is influenced by pile's rotational behavior under lateral load. Prasad and Chari (1999) assumed the rotation point of pile and suggested an equation of ultimate lateral load capacity. In this study, we investigate the depth of rotation point in both homogeneous soil and multi layered soil, and compare with the estimation value by previous research. Test results show that measured rotation point and estimated value by Prasad and Chari's equation show good agreement and multi layered condition affects the location of rotation point to be changed.

The prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires partial confinement utilization under eccentric loading. This is attributed to the reduction in compression zone compared to columns under pure axial compression. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis under static loads. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength due to partial confinement has not been treated before. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate eccentric confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value $f_{cc}$ (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value $f^{\prime}_c$ (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the ratio of compression area to total area of each eccentricity. This approach is used to implement an adaptive Mander model for analyzing eccentrically loaded columns. Generalization of the 3D moment of area approach is implemented based on proportional loading, fiber model and the secant stiffness approach, in an incremental-iterative numerical procedure to achieve the equilibrium path of $P-{\varepsilon}$ and $M-{\varphi}$ response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adapted to assess the confining effect in rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This analysis is validated against experimental data found in the literature showing good correlation to the partial confinement model while rendering the full confinement treatment unsafe.

This paper presents definition of symmetry of a ship section where three symmetries are proposed: material, geometric, and load symmetries. Precise terminologies of centroid, moment plane, and neutral axis plane are also defined. It is suggested that force vector equilibrium as well as force equilibrium are necessary condition to determine new position of neutral axis due to translational and rotational mobility. It is also stated that new reference datum of ENMP(elastic neutral moment plane), PNMP(fully plastic moment plane), ENAP(elastic neutral axis plane), and INAP(inelastic neutral moment plane) are required to define asymmetric section properties such as second moment of area, elastic section modulus, yield moment, fully plastic moment, and ultimate moment. Since collision-induced damage and flooding-induced biaxial bending moment produce typical asymmetry of section, the section properties are calculated for a typical VLCC. Geometry asymmetry is determined from ABS and DNV rules and two moment planes of 0/30 degs are assumed for load asymmetry. It is proved that the property reduction ratios directly calculated from second moment of area are usually larger than area reduction ratio. Reduction ratio of ultimate moment capacity shows almost linearly proportional to area reduction ratio. Mobility of elastic and inelastic neutral axis planes is visually provided.
The ultimate bending strength and flexural ductility performance of longitudinally stiffened plate girders fabricated with mild steel were investigated utilizing nonlinear incremental finite element analysis. AASHTO LRFD (2002) design specifications were reviewed for possible application of longitudinally stiffened plate girders as compact sections. In order to investigate compact section requirements for plate girders with longitudinal stiffeners in webs, a number of full-scale plate girders were modeled and analyzed up to the collapse under pure bending condition. It was found that the slenderness of sub panel of the webs, the stiffness of longitudinal stiffeners, and the slenderness of compression flanges are key parameters governing the flexural ductility of the plate girders. It was also found from finite element analysis that longitudinally stiffened plate girder sections can satisfy compact section requirements both in full plastic moment capacity and flexural ductility requirement. New design equations have been proposed for longitudinally stiffened plate girders to be treated as compact sections.
This paper summarises the results of an experimental study to investigate the flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened using carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate in four-point bending. The experimental parameters included are the reinforcing bar ratio ${\rho}_s$ and preload level. Four bar ratios were selected (${\rho}_s=0.13$ to 0.86%), representing the section of two longitudinal tensile reinforcements, with diameters of 8, 14, 16, and 20 mm in order to reveal the effect of bar ratio on failure load and failure mode. Eight beams that could be considered "full-scale" in size, measuring 200 mm in width, 400 mm in total height and 2300 mm in length, were tested. Three beams were selected with different bar ratios (${\rho}_1$, ${\rho}_2$, ${\rho}_3$), and considered as control specimens (without ), while three other beams identical to the control beams with the same CFRP laminates ratio and a seventh beam with ${\rho}_{min}$ (the lowest bar ratio) were also used. In the second part of the study, two beams with the bar ratio ${\rho}_2$ were preloaded at two levels, 50 and 100% of their ultimate loads, and then repaired. This experimental investigation was consolidated using an analytical model. The experimental and analytical results indicate that the flexional capacity and stiffness of strengthened and repaired beams using CFRP laminate were increased compared to those of control beams, and the behaviour of repaired beams was nearly similar to the undamaged and strengthened beams; unlike the ductility of strengthened beams, which was greatly reduced compared to the control.
This paper presents a research work for the evaluation of the nominal flexural strength of composite girders in positive bending region. Current predicting equations for the nominal flexural strength of composite girders in the 2012 version of the Korea Bridge Design Codes based on Limit State Design Method are able to apply for the composite girders with conventional structural steels. For applying composite girders with high yield strength steels of HSB800 as well as HSB600, there is a need for improving the current predicting equations. In order to investigate the nominal flexural strength of composite girders, previous research works are carefully reviewed and parametric study using a moment-curvature analysis program is conducted to evaluate the ultimate moment capacity and the ductility of a wide range of composite girders. Based on the results of the parametric study, less conservative nominal flexural strength design equations are proposed for conventional composite girders. In addition, new design equations for predicting the nominal flexural strength of composite girders with HSB600 and HSB800 high-performance steels are provided.
