Analysis of several VERA benchmark problems with the photon transport capability of STREAM

  • STREAM - a lattice transport calculation code with method of characteristics for the purpose of light water reactor analysis - has been developed by the Computational Reactor Physics and Experiment laboratory (CORE) of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). Recently, efforts have been taken to develop a photon module in STREAM to assess photon heating and the influence of gamma photon transport on power distributions, as only neutron transport was considered in previous STREAM versions. A multi-group photon library is produced for STREAM based on the ENDF/B-VII.1 library with the use of the library-processing code NJOY. The developed photon solver for the computation of 2D and 3D distributions of photon flux and energy deposition is based on the method of characteristics like the neutron solver. The photon library and photon module produced and implemented for STREAM are verified on VERA pin and assembly problems by comparison with the Monte Carlo code MCS - also developed at UNIST. A short analysis of the impact of photon transport during depletion and thermal hydraulics feedback is presented for a 2D core also from the VERA benchmark.

  • As a foundational research for formulating a comprehensive operation plan for Ulsan Library, this study has been undertaken to develop directions for the future library services by performing surveys on the users and library staffs. Consequently, first, the users have demonstrated such a high demand for collaborative services, such as make possible variable library services using a single membership ID across the nation. Second, there is a significant difference in the awareness among the two groups in regards to the awareness of promotional methods for the facilitation of the use of public library in Ulsan. That is, while the staffs highly preferred the use of media such as newspaper, magazines, and radios, users demonstrated the converse and, instead, preferred field trip programs. Third, there seemed to be a certain level of agreement by and among the users and staffs in respect of the library's roles such as that of providing diverse education and programs on reading activities, and that of enabling diverse cultural activities such as arts and culture.

An Analysis on the Tasks of a School Library Support Center : A Case Study of JungBu Public Library of Ulsan Metropolitan City (학교도서관지원센터의 현장 지원 과제와 전략에 관한 연구 - 울산광역시 학교도서관지원센터(중부도서관)의 경우 -)

  • The purpose of this article is to propose the functions of the School Library Support Center of the Ulsan Metropolitan City. The findings are based on the 2009 and 2010 statistics of the school libraries in the Ulsan Metropolitan City, and a questionnaire survey that was conducted for teacher librarians and the class teachers who manage their school libraries without a Library Science degree. The proposed tasks of the School Library Support Center fall into two categories: administrative and practical. Administrative tasks include assigning teacher librarians to schools, expanding library resources, and establishing an integrated supervision system for both school libraries and student reading programs. Practical tasks include developing educational programs, informing library program providers to school, and public relations programs about the Center's services.

  • This study is analyzed an operating outcome of Bibliotherapy Programs in Ulsan NamBu Library. This library is running the Programs by the librarians as leaders for the children and housewives. In the process of the running them, however, there are some problems as well as positive effects which need to be reviewed and helped for the future process. For all, the reactions and interests of the program directors, the participants and other people in the area were observed. and the problems in the light of the experience and observations of the researcher on the study were surveyed.

  • This study surveyed the online catalog retrieval systems of the university libraries in Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam districts. The types of library materials, and the kinds of access points and retrieval conditions(Boolean logic, methods of index term Identification, and particularities of the retrieval) of these systems are various and different to each other Upon the result of this survey a suggestion for the standardization of online catalog retrieval systems is offered.

Interpretation of two SINBAD photon-leakage benchmarks with nuclear library ENDF/B-VIII.0 and Monte Carlo code MCS

  • A review of the documentation and an interpretation of the NEA-1517/74 and NEA-1517/80 shielding benchmarks (measurements of photon leakage flux from a hollow sphere with a central 14 MeV neutron source) from the SINBAD database with the Monte Carlo code MCS and the most up-to-date ENDF/B-VIII.0 neutron data library are conducted. The two analyzed benchmarks describe satisfactorily the energy resolution of the photon detector and the geometry of the spherical samples with inner beam tube, tritium target and cooling water circuit, but lack information regarding the detector geometry and the distances of shields and collimators relatively to the neutron source and the detector. Calculations are therefore conducted for a sphere model only. A preliminary verification of MCS neutron-photon calculations against MCNP6.2 is first conducted, then the impact of modelling the inner beam tube, tritium target and cooling water circuit is assessed. Finally, a comparison of calculated results with the libraries ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 against the measurements is conducted and shows reasonable agreement. The MCS and MCNP inputs used for the interpretation are available as supplementary material of this article.

  • The criticality analysis of VVER-1000 mock-up benchmark experiments from the LR-0 research reactor operated by the Research Center Rez in the Czech Republic has been conducted with the MCS Monte Carlo code developed at the Computational Reactor Physics and Experiment laboratory of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology. The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the newest ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library against the VVER-1000 mock-up integral experiments and to validate the criticality analysis capability of MCS for light water reactors with hexagonal fuel lattices. A preliminary code/code comparison between MCS and MCNP6 is first conducted to verify the suitability of MCS for the benchmark interpretation, then the validation against experimental data is performed with both ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 libraries. The investigated experimental data comprises six experimental critical configurations and four experimental pin-by-pin power maps. The MCS and MCNP6 inputs used for the criticality analysis of the VVER-1000 mock-up are available as supplementary material of this article.

Electroacupuncture Treatment for Post-Stroke Foot Drop: A Systemic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

  • A review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using electroacupuncture (EA) to treat patients with foot drop was performed to analyze the effectiveness of EA for this condition. Relevant studies (n = 183) from 7 databases (Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica Database, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Korean Studies Information Service System, Research Information Sharing Service, and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System) were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 12 RCTs met the selection criteria. In all 12 studies, EA showed significantly positive changes. In most indicators, positive changes were observed in the EA group compared with that in the control group. Significant increases were confirmed in muscle strength-related indicators such as the Fugl-Meyer motor scale, surface electromyography, active range of motion, and gait-related indicators such as the Tinetti score, maximum walking speed, and Berg balance scale. No notable adverse events were reported. EA is suggested as an effective treatment for post-stroke foot drop; however, more RCTs are required.

  • This study surveyed the retrieval systems for digital information resources of the university libraries in Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam districts and the vendors. Kinds of access points and retrieval conditions (Boolean logic, methods of index term identification, and particularities of the retrieval) of the libraries' systems are various and different to each other. Access points of the vendors' systems are unessentially various and different to each other, but the retrieval conditions are rather elaborated. Upon the result the suggestions for the standardization of digital information retrieval system are offered.

  • In 2010 there are 759 public libraries in Korea, and they have been increased constantly for the recent four to five years. In order to make them as cultural spaces in local communities, Korean government is now planning to increase the number of public libraries up to 900 and to build small to medium-sized multiple purpose libraries rather than large and single purpose ones. Especially in the case of public libraries in metropolitan cities, which are main libraries in those areas, they should be designed to play major functions of cultural experience, exhibition, and life-long education as well as to meet the basic needs of providing books for public reading and of building and developing branch libraries based on local characteristics. Above all, in order to make a public library as a center of local culture, a space planning focused on increasing utilization and satisfaction of the residents is required. It is essential to conduct a survey to understand the needs of the residential users and reflect their opinions. In this regard, our research process was constructed as follows. First, precedent studies on a certain densely populated area were reviewed. Second, a survey was conducted in Ulsan city to figure out the needs and the satisfaction level of the actual users. The purpose of this study is to propose a better space planning approach for public libraries in metropolitan cities based on the analysis.
