  • Volcanic landforms are classified into the volcanic edifice produced through constructive processes of eruption and the crater generated by destructive processes of eruption. Both landforms are distributed around Korean Peninsula including attaching islands. However, only a few regions such as Mt. Baekdu, Jeju Island, Ulleung Island, and Chugaryeong, which are closely related with the volcanic eruption occurred during the Quaternary, could be considered as a volcanic landform. It results in categorizing the volcanic landform as an unusual topography in Korea. The study of Korean researchers on the volcanic landform were regularized in 1970s on Jeju Island, in 1980s on Ulleung Island, and in 1990s on Mt. Baekdu, respectively. Oreums and lava tubes in Jeju Island have been also examined since 1980s. Compared with other fields of geomorphology, researches as well as researchers on the volcanic landform are very few in Korea. Geomorphologists are expected to perform an active research in that the volcanic landform of Korea have diverse values.

  • The composition of minerals and amino acids in Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum tissues collected from different habitats in Ulleung Island and Mt. Hambeak of the Korean Peninsula is investigated. The mineral composition of A. victorialis stem was high compared to that of bulb in all population samples. The most abundant mineral found in all the samples was potassium (K). The mineral composition was variable in garlic population of Ulleung Island in a habitat dependent manner. The A. victorialis stems and bulbs showed significant differences in their amino acid compositions according to varying habitats of Ulleung Island and Mt. Hambeak. Among the amino acids the most abundant amino acid in A. victorialis bulb tissue was arginine, followed by leucine and valine. The amino acids leucine, valine, and phenylalanine were abundant in stem tissues. The total amino acids of the A. victorialis stem tissue from Teawha pass peak sample (837 mg/100 g dry wt) were higher than the mean of other population samples (355-824 mg/100 g dry wt). However, content of amino acids in the bulb was high in A. victorialis from Nari basin (1,919 mg/100 g dry wt).

  • Authors studies on the isolation of non-sucrose fermentation Vibrio species such as V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus and V. damsela from sea water, shellfishes and various algae at Ulleung island in the east of Korea on summer in 1985. Authors carried out test for isolated strains to biochemical characteristics, halophilism, hemolysis and serological reaction. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Strains isolated from total specimens were 25 strains of V. parahaemolyticus, 2 strains of V. vulnificus and 1 strain of V. damsela, respectively. 2. Isolated frequency of Vibrio species from sea water and marine products was lower than on specimens in the southern sea of Korea from 1980 to 1985. 3. On hemolysis reaction on blood agar media using human and rabbit erythrocytes, 14 strains among 25 strains of V. parahaemolyticus isolated were positive, and V. vulnificus and V. damsela were positive, respectively. 4. The distributions of serotypes of V. parahaemolyticus isolated were from O1 group to O10 group, and from K 10 to K 69. The results of K serotypes were as follows ; serotype K 10 and K 33 were 2 strains, serotype K 59 and K 69 were 1 strain, respectively. And 2 strains of V. vulnificus isolated were not agglutinated by antiserum of V. vulnificus. Therefore, the probability is that 2 strains of V. vulnificus isolated were other serotypes distributed on sea weater and marine products of Ulleung island of Korea.

  • Monthly mean chlorophyll concentration in the East Sea was estimated from the ocean color observed by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on Nimbus-7 satellite which had performed various remote sensing missions from 1979 to 1986. The areas of high chlorophyll concentration were found in the sea between Siberia coast and Sakhalin Island, in the Donghan Bay and in the Ulleung Basin. In the southwestern East Sea, especially in the area near Ulleung Island, the yearly maximum chlorophyll concentration occurred in December. The chlorophyll concentration in Ulleung Basin in December was about two times higher than during spring bloom in April. The early winter bloom occurred in the warm side of the front that was formed between warm water from the East China Sea and nutrition rich cold water from the northern East Sea.

  • 16 APEX floats, autonomous profiling floats deployed as part of the Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program, are used to understand the currents at 800 m underwater in the southwestern East Sea. The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed range 0.2 to 4.29 cm/sec and the variability in the north in the DB is stronger than that in the south. The eddy kinetic energy is found a few $cm^{2}$ $S^{-2}$. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 - 1.6 cm/see are observed with the bottom topography.

  • Leaf and bulb of wild garlic (Allium victorials var. platyphyllum) from Ulleung Island and Gangneung region were extracted with water and 70% ethanol and investigated on its antioxidative activity. Total polyphenol content of Ulleung island wild garlic was higher than that of Gangneung region. Total polyphenol content in bulb was high compared to content of the leaves, and 70% ethanol extract of Ulleung Island leaf was high in 72.50 mg/g. Flavonoid content in leaf was higher than that of bulb, 70% ethanol extract of Ulleung Island leaf was high in 73.30 mg/g. Electron donating activity of 70% ethanol extract from Ulleung island and water extracts (55.13%) from Gangneung were higher than those of other extracts. Bulb extracts on electron donating activity were higher than those of the leaf extracts. SOD like activity of extracts was high in 70% ethanol extract of wild gallic leaf cultivated at Gangneung. Hydroxy radical scavenging activity of wild gallic was high in leaf extracts compared to activity of bulb extracts. Hydroxy radical scavenging activity (58.85%) of Ulleung island wild gallic leaf extracts was higher than that of the wild gallic leaves of Gangneung. Lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity was both high in water and 70% ethanol leaf extracts of Ulleung island and Gangneung region, especially, 70% ethanol extract of leaves from Ulleung island was the highest 73.33%. These results suggest that extracts from wild garlic could be used as an antioxidative functional food source.

  • The flora of Ulleung island was summarized as 975 taxa with 122 families, 465 genus, 762 species, 5 sub-species, 178 varieties, 21 forms, and 9 hybrids. This extent of plant diversity of the island ecosystem was modified from the field surveys by the authors adding the number of 627 taxa; 109 families, 355 genus, 526 species, 2 sub-species, 89 varieties and 10 forms, and Considering the aspects of geographical distribution of the island, the flora showed much closer to the Korean penninsula than that of the Japanese Archipelago. An action plan including intensive conservation and management both for habitat and plant to conserve the island ecosystem should be prepared. The naturalized plants is expanding gradually due to the increase of the tourist. The Ulleung island ecosystem should be conserved as the Protected Area, which is enlarged habitat compared with the present legal conservation actions.

  • Most known species in the Physalacriaceae are saprotrophs that grow on decaying leaves and wood, and approximately 21 genera in the Physalacriaceae have been reported worldwide. During an ongoing survey of indigenous fungi in Korea, four specimens belonging to the Physalacriaceae were collected on Ulleung Island. These specimens were identified as three species based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of rDNA-internal transcribed spacer sequences. Three species in three genera were shown to be new records in Korea: Hymenopellis orientalis, Paraxerula hongoi, and Ponticulomyces orientalis. The latter two are the first records of these genera in Korea. In this study, we provide detailed morphological descriptions of these species and describe their phylogenetic position within the Physalacriaceae.

  • Scrophularia takesimensis Nakai called 'Sum-Hyun Sam' growing about 1m in high is a perennial plant of Scrophulariaceae. Because the number of these species is very limited in the world, the Ministry of Environment has appointed S. takesimensis as a preserved plant. The Korea Forest Service also protects it strictly by the law since S. takesimensis is an out-of-the-way plant and possible to be exterminated soon in Korea. Investigation for distribution and ecological characteristics of the habitat far S. takesimensis was carried out in Ulleung-do Island. S. takesimensis has a tendency to emerged with Calystegia soldanella Roem. et Schultb. and Artemisia japonica subsp. littoricola Kitam. C. soldanella community were developed on the dry and well-lighted as east or north facing conditions. A. japonica subsp. littoricola community have tendency to developed on the properly lighted as west or north facing and well maintained soil or air humidity. C. soldanella community were developed on the sandy gravel or gravel and grew with Farfugium japonicum, (L.) Kitam., Lonicera japonica Thunb., and Peucedanum japonicum Thunb.. A japonica subsp. littoricola communities were emerged on the rock beds or pile of rocks and grew with Sedum oryzifolium Makino, Sedum takesimense Nakai, and Spergularia marina (L.) Griseb.
