  • New computing paradigm in ubiquitous computing environments is revolutionizing the way people interact with computers, services and the surrounding physical spaces. In order to provide stronger authentication, MIST proposed an authentication framework for ubiquitous computing environments and assigned confidence values to some authentication methods to facility the combining. However, the assigned confidence values lack sufficient evidence. In this paper reliable confidence values for each authentication method used in MIST is proposed. These confidence values can combine multiple confidence values in some manner, producing a more accurate net confidence value. Authentication entities with confidence values allows the authentication framework to blond nicely into ubiquitous computing environments.

  • It is important issue how to evaluate the economic feasibility of computing factors in the real world when we build ubiquitous spaces. In this paper, we propose a simple model that can evaluate the economic feasibility of mobile RFID-based ubiquitous computing system which enables seamless communication between offline and online via embedded computing factors in the real world. To achieve this, we explore the meaning of mobile RFID system, the difference between our research and extant researches concerning the evaluation of economic feasibility in RFID system, and propose the so-called 'Tag-based Evaluation Model' (TEM) which is an evaluation model to access the economic feasibility of mobile RFID systems. We also analyze the TEM via simulation cases based on proposed model and discuss the future of TEM.

  • In ubiquitous spaces, a user wants to be provided with a VOD service while moving one space to another freely. Since the traditional VOD system is dependent on user location, the VOD server transmits video data to a single client during a session. If the user moves to another space, he/she should close the old session and make a new request for the same video. However, the location-aware VOD system supports user mobility by closing and opening the session automatically. That is, the VOD system automatically perceives the movement of a user and allows the server to change the data flow so that a client near the user can receive the video data. This paper proposes a location-aware VOD service architecture and a session handoff scheme to provide a mobile user with continuous video delivery and implements a location-aware VOD prototype system based on Jini and Java. In experiment, we show that the proposed handoff scheme has a smaller handoff delay than the other handoff scheme.

  • The roles and services of a library have historically been influenced and developed by the change of information technologies. The ubiquitous technologies have been widely studied for medical area, construction, commerce, broadcasting, telecommunication and so on. The ubiquitous technologies have extended to the roles and services in a library. The development of ubiquitous IT, the roles and functions of a library and information center should be changed. To adjust evolving environment, this study focuses on concept and definition of ubiquitous computing and networks. Especially, with requirements and essential technologies which can be a technological infrastructure for ubiquitous life, library services and roles in ubiquitous life are discussed by literature review, case analysis and expert interview. With the results, this study proposes that library services and roles in ubiquitous life should be considered in two ways which are network and physical spaces. Also, roles of a library in ubiquitous life will be extended to culture and education center including traditional information center. To perform those roles and services, a library should develop various service programs relating culture and education such as personalized service and educational program.

  • Large-scale urban developments with increasing population and expansion of industrial facilities have destroyed the ecosystem. Consequently, the importance of vertical farm as a form of urban agriculture is increasing. However, such problems of vertical farms as economy and lack of awareness of residents are being raised. Firstly, this study derived types of vertical farm that are applicable to residential spaces through an examination of vertical farm buildings, and then inferred assessment items for a questionnaire survey for the development of u-services. Secondly, based on the issues deduced from the survey, u-services needed in vertical farm buildings were derived to use them as the basic data when we plan for a ubiquitous vertical farm building in residential space in the future. As result, the following uservices of ubiquitous vertical farm were proposed: u-notification service about the condition of crops from the aspect of growth management based on ubiquitous technology, remote/automatic control u-services, harvest information u-service for harvest management, recipe information u-service, and indoor air quality monitoring u-service, indoor environment adjusting u-service, and farm environment control u-service. Considering that many new buildings in Korea are residential buildings and many high-rise buildings are being planned, studies on vertical farm buildings must be continued.

  • The spread of mobile devices, PDAs and sensors has enabled the construction of ubiquitous computing environments, transforming regular physical spaces into 'smart space' augmented with intelligence and enhanced with services. However, unless privacy concerns are taken into account early in the design process of various ubiquitous devices(e.g. mobile devices, PDAs, sensors, etc.). we will end up crating ubiquitous surveillance infrastructure. Also, it may inappropriate to use public key techniques for computational constrained devices in ubiquitous computing environment. In this paper, we propose efficient user authentication and ky agreement protocol not only to preserve anonymity for protecting personal privacy but also to be suitable for computational constrained devices in ubiquitous computing environments.

  • New paradigm of the 21st is 'Ubiquitous'. And great changes arises from the digital environment and technology. Also, our living environments are changing very rapidly. Because of rapid developments, we didn't have enough time to examine our current situation. So we had to look around the current living spaces. The main purpose of this research was to know about the home network service and environmental context in our living spaces and to explore the outlook in the forseeable future. To search them, four recent digital home exhibition houses were examined. The findings showed that many kinds of common network systems were suggested and were acted in limited spaces. And when we examined the environmental context, we found most of the instruments were installed fixed ones or integrated information appliances. Therefore, the plan of digital home needs to consider environmental context and the combination of residents and living spaces.

  • As the change of information and digital technology progresses, ubiquitous space is attracting attention as a new space concept in which the physical and digital spaces are connected to each other. As its meaning in latin itself - 'there exist everywhere at the same time'- implies, however, the ubiquitous space has been mostly discussed in a non-physical aspect, such as in a technological area, rather than its physical intrinsic property until now. Although theories regarding a ubiquitous city have been rarity suggested, in most cases, technological aspects such as the systemization or networking of individual information service have been the focus. However, one of the intentions induced in the concept that scholars including Mark weiser and Sakamura Ken introduced was to place humans in the center of the space in which the technology has been placed instead of humans. For this purpose, the renovation of human interface must be required. As technology develops, the achievement of ubiquitous space may be possible, and efforts to apply this to real space are making an appearance. The examples of the present research are the spaces that have a characteristic of the laboratory separated from life in the city, and the construct scale is in the level of an individual facility; therefore, further studies should functionally and spaciously connect all subjects existing in space and effectively relate this to real world. The present research is intended to demonstrate the investigation on several projects that are currently underway and the developmental direction of new, ubiquitous space.

  • As Ubiquitous era comes, it became necessary to construct environment which can provide more useful information to human in the spaces where people live like homes or offices. On this account, network of the peripheral devices of Ubiquitous should constitute efficiently. For it, this paper researched human pattern by classified motion recognition using sensors module data. (This data processing by Neural network and fuzzy algorithm.) This pattern classification can help control home network system communication. I suggest the system which can control home network system more easily through patterned movement, and control Ubiquitous environment by grasp human's movement and condition.

  • Future space is currently getting a great deal of attention to apply ubiquitous computing technology. At the same time, various ubiquitous technology-based products are being developed with service scenarios in the views of diverse user groups predicted. Since these service models and scenarios need to be tested to verify effectiveness, it requires researchers to predict spatial shapes and service scenarios for future domestic environment that fulfills diverse future spatial requirements including ecological and user-oriented spaces, extended amenity getting maximum benefits from technology, etc. To support these developments, the need to make a physical test-bed, a real building model, is essential. However building a physical test-bed generally is economically expensive and even if the test-bed could be settled, it must be carefully designed before it is built In this paper, we suggest a virtual smart test-bed, called "V-PlaceLab", using virtual reality techniques. This system allows not only to inspect a scenario with the aid of computer simulation on a virtual environment, but also to design a virtual test-bed mentioned above.
