  • Noncoherent receivers are favored for block-code-modulated ultrawideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) systems because of their low implementation complexity compared with coherent rake receivers. However, existing noncoherent schemes, such as transmitted reference (TR) systems and averaged differential receivers (ADR), suffer from performance degradation and energy efficiency loss. Codeword matching and signal aggregation (CMSA) is a low complexity noncoherent receiver for UWB-IR. As the frame/symbol duration is shortened to boost data rate, interframe interference (IFI) or intersymbol interference (ISI) occurs and degrades the detection performance of CMSA. In this paper, block coded correlator which consists of the delay components and the reference signal is proposed to improve the performance of the receiver. Simulation results show that the proposed system leads to the better performance compared to the conventional CMSA receiver.

  • As the development of wireless techniques, transmission technology of body area network plays an important role in realizing a welfare society by combining IT and BT when applying to vehicles. Off-body WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network) systems for video data transmission require low battery consumption and high data rate. To satisfy the requirement, UWB has been considered as a promising candidate for high rate WBAN. This paper introduces an antenna selection technique for ultra-wideband based off-body WBAN system with low complexity. In this paper, we propose an antenna selection scheme using non-coherent receiver for off-body high data rate WBAN system. The proposed receiver antenna selection method takes advantage of the characteristic of BPPM (Binary Pulse Position Modulation). With the property of BPPM, this scheme calculates the approximate SNR of the received signal with non-coherent receiver.

  • UWB is the most spotlighted wireless technology that transmits data at very high rates using low power over a wide spectrum of frequency band. UWB technology makes it possible to transmit data at rate over 100Mbps within 10 meters. To preserve important header information, MB-OFDM UWB adopts Reed-Solomon(23,17) code. In receiver, RS decoder needs high speed and low latency using efficient hardware. In this paper, we suggest the architecture of RS decoder for MB-OFDM UWB. We adopts Modified-Euclidean algorithm for key equation solver block which is most complex in area. We suggest pipelined processing cell for this block and show the detailed architecture of syndrome, Chien search and Forney algorithm block. At last, we show the hardware implementation results of RS decoder for ASIC implementation.

  • The MB-OFDM based UWB communication system is a personal area network specification aiming to provide 480Mbps peak data rate over 528 MHz spectrum. As the corresponding baseband modem operates at high clock rate, its complexity should be optimized for low power consumption. A set of modem design parameters is suggested including the AD bit width, the clipping level and the quantization level at the Viterbi decoder input as well as the trace-back depth of the Viterbi decoder. The data throughput is used to evaluate the performance of the receiver and a recommended set of design parameter values is presented to aid efficient modem implementation.

  • This paper presents a direct-conversion CMOS transceiver for fully digital DS-UWB systems. The transceiver includes all of the radio building blocks, such as a T/R switch, a low noise amplifier, an I/Q demodulator, a low pass filter, a variable gain amplifier as a receiver, the same receiver blocks as a transmitter including a phase-locked loop (PLL), and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). A single-ended-to-differential converter is implemented in the down-conversion mixer and a differential-to-single-ended converter is implemented in the driver amplifier stage. The chip is fabricated on a 9.0 $mm^2$ die using standard 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology and a 64-pin MicroLead Frame package. Experimental results show the total current consumption is 143 mA including the PLL and VCO. The chip has a 3.5 dB receiver gain flatness at the 660 MHz bandwidth. These results indicate that the architecture and circuits are adaptable to the implementation of a wideband, low-power, and high-speed wireless personal area network.

  • In this paper, we propose a RF front-end developments for vehicle UWB radar systems. UWB systems have a very narrow pulse width that is below 1ns. Therefore, UWB is designed to have broadband quality of low power several GHz and must coexist with the radio communication system. UWB's advantages include high channel capacity and data rate, because precise resolution for multi-path can easily position estimate and Rake receiver. Also, UWB has low interference because it displays broadband quality of low power. Positioning is made possible by short range accuracy, which can reduce the expense of system design. An RF front-end module is designed using the DCR(Direct ConveRsion) method and is composed in RF for vehicles at a low-cost.
