  • A pilot study was performed to examine the feasibility of UV disinfection system and the reactivation of indicator microorganisms (TC, FC, E. coli) after UV irradiation for agricultural reuse of reclaimed water. Photoreactivation and dark repair enable UV-inactivated microorganisms to recover and may reduce the efficacy of UV inactivation, which might be drawbacks of the UV disinfection method. The effluent of biofilter for 16-unit apartment house was used as input to the UV disinfection system, and average SS and BOD concentration were 3.8 and 5.7 mg/L, respectively, and the mean level of total coliform was in the range of $1.0\times10^4$ MPN/100mL. UV disinfection was found to be effective and it reduced mean concentration of indicator microorganisms (total coliform, fecal coliform, and E. coli) to less than 100 MPN/100mL within 60s exposure using 17, 25, and 40W lamps. Two UV doses of 6 and 16 mW$\cdot$s/$\textrm{km}^2$ were applied and microorganisms reactivation was monitored under the dark, photoreactivating light, and solar irradiation. Microorganisms reactivation was observed in the UV dose of 6 mW$\cdot$s/$\textrm{km}^2$, and numbers increased up to 5% at the photoreactivating light and 1% at the dark. However, microorganisms were inactivated rather than reactivated at the solar radiation and numbers decreased to non-detectible level about below 2 MPN/100mL in 4 hours. In the case of 16 mW$\cdot$s/$\textrm{km}^2$, microorganism reactivation was not observed indicating that UV dose might affect the reactivation process such as photoreactivation and dark repair. Therefore, concerns associated with microorganism reactivation could be controlled by sufficient UV dose application. Agricultural reuse of reclaimed water might be even less concerned due to exposure to the solar irradiation that could further inactivate microorganisms. The pilot study result is encouraging, however, sanitary concern in water reuse is so critical that more comprehensive investigation is recommended.

  • Recently UV laser micromachining processes is widely introduced to meet the needs of advanced components of IT, BT and ET industries. Due to the characteristics of non-contact and high-speed laser processing, UV laser micromachining is applied to manufacture very thin substrate such as polymer, metals and composite. These minimum line width obtained by UV laser micromachining is generally determined from laser wavelength, optical lens and its numerical aperture. In this paper we will show the lens effect of water droplet on the surface of workpiece to reduce the line width when UV laser light is irradiated and focused through the water droplet. Because of the refraction effect generated by the semi-spherical or spherical shape of water droplet, we can find smaller line width. And water droplet could not only protect thermal deformation, but also carry away burr around micro dent. Firstly fundamental theory of minimum line width was derived from relationship between the geometry of water droplet and laser light trace, and then experimental and simulation results will be finally compared to verify the effectiveness of water droplet lens effect of UV laser micromachining process.

  • FAT compounds photocatalysts were prepared with $TiOSO_4{\cdot}xH_2O$ (TOS) by a sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET specific surface area, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The SEM results showed that ferric compounds and titanium dioxide were fixed onto the AC surfaces. The XRD results showed that Fe-AC/$TiO_2$ composites mostly contained anatase phase. EDX showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks in all samples. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue (MB) solution, via compare photodegradation of MB solution under visible light and UV light separately. Fe-AC/$TiO_2$ composites had an excellent photocatalytic under strong visible light irradiation. A small amount of Fe ions in AC/$TiO_2$ particles could obviously enhance their photocatalytic activity.

  • $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel process using titanium tetra isopropoxide as a precursor at room temperature. Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared by photoreduction of $AgNO_3$ on $TiO_2$ under UV light irradiation and calcinated at $400^{\circ}C$. Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were characterized for their structural and morphological properties by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic properties of the $TiO_2$ and Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were evaluated according to the degree of photocatalytic degradation of gaseous benzene under UV and visible light irradiation. To estimate the rate of photolysis under UV (${\lambda}=365nm$) and visible (${\lambda}{\geq}410nm$) light, the residual concentration of benzene was monitored by gas chromatography (GC). Both undoped/doped nanoparticles showed about 80 % of photolysis of benzene under UV light. However, under visible light irradiation Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles exhibited a photocatalytic reaction toward the photodegradation of benzene more efficient than that of bare $TiO_2$. The enhanced photocatalytic reaction of Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles is attributed to the decrease in the activation energy and to the existence of Ag in the $TiO_2$ host lattice, which increases the absorption capacity in the visible region by acting as an electron trapper and promotes charge separation of the photoinduced electrons ($e^-$) and holes ($h^+$). The use of Ag-doped $TiO_2$ nanoparticles preserved the option of an environmentally benign photocatalytic reaction using visible light; These particles can be applicable to environmental cleaning applications.

  • Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) spears were treated with white (color temperature 4,500 k), blue (peak 450 nm), and red (peak 660 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ for 12 h, and UV-B (280 nm) at 0.5 kJ or 1.0 kJ to determine the effect on agronomic characteristics, antioxidant phytochemicals, and antioxidant activity. The fresh weight, length, and width of spears were not affected by light quality treatments. The free sugars and chlorophyll contents were increased by 9 and 41%, respectively in the UV-0.5 kJ treatments. Among the antioxidant phytochemicals (vitamin C, total phenol, rutin, and total flavonoid), vitamin C was most greatly affected by the light treatments. Vitamin C content was significantly increased in asparagus spears subjected to the white (114%), red (137%), and UV-0.5 kJ(127%) treatments compared to the control. By contrast, rutin, total phenol, and total flavonoid content were increased only in samples subjected to the red and UV-0.5 kJ treatment. Furthermore, antioxidant activity, as measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, increased in white, red, and UV-0.5 kJ treatments by about 43, 41, and 43%, respectively, compared to the control. These results suggest that postharvest treatment of asparagus spears with red light at $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ for 12 h or with UV-B (280 nm) at 0.5 kJ could enhance the functional quality of the asparagus spears by increasing the content of phytochemicals like vitamin C, rutin, total phenolics, and total flavonoids.

  • Titania is widely used as an effective photocatalyst for the photodegradation of environmental pollutants in air. In this study, novel N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer. N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were nano-sized with an average particle size of about 20 nm. The XRD pattern of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts showed both anatase and rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of NO under UV and visible light irradiation at various parameters such as amount of photocatalyst, concentration of NO, and intensity of light. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was effective for the enhancement of the degradation of NO and higher than that of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts under UV and visible light irradiation.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a hybrid surface-polishing process that utilizes both mechanical and chemical energy. However, the recently emerging semiconductor substrate and thin film materials are challenging to process using the existing CMP. Therefore, previous researchers have conducted studies to increase the material removal rate (MRR) of CMP. Most materials studied to improve MRR have high hardness and chemical stability. Methods for enhancing the material removal efficiency of CMP include additional provision of electric, thermal, light, mechanical, and chemical energies. This study aims to introduce research trends on CMP using ultraviolet (UV) light to these methods to improve the material removal efficiency of CMP. This method, photocatalysis-assisted chemical mechanical polishing (PCMP), utilizes photocatalytic oxidation using UV light. In this study, the target materials of the PCMP application include SiC, GaN, GaAs, and Ru. This study explains the photocatalytic reaction, which is the basic principle of PCMP, and reviews studies on PCMP according to materials. Additionally, the researchers classified the PCMP system used in existing studies and presented the course for further investigation of PCMP. This study aims to aid in understanding PCMP and set the direction of future research. Lastly, since there have not been many studies on the tribology characteristics in PCMP, research on this is expected to be required.

  • Cyanidation method has been used to extract high-purity gold and silver in mining industry. Such mining activities have used a large amount of cyanide, and the mine wastewater contained a high level of cyanide has brought about pollution of surrounding aqueous environments. This research was initiated to study $TiO_2$-catalytic UV-LED photo-oxidation to remove cyanide from the mine wastewater. UV lamp has been generally used as a light source in conventional photo-oxidation so far, but it shows numerous drawbacks. For this reason, this study focused on the evaluation of applicability of UV-LED as an alternative light source in cyanide photo-oxidation process. Three types of $TiO_2$ photo-catalyst were compared in terms of performance of photo-oxidation of cyanide, and the results show that Degussa P25 was the most efficient. In addition, four types of UV-LED were tested to compare their efficiencies of cyanide photo-oxidation, and their efficacy was increased in the order of 365 nm lamp-type > 365 nm can-type > 280 nm can-type > 420 nm lamp-type. Not only did this study demonstrate that UV-LED can be used in the photo-oxidation of cyanide as an alternative light source of UV lamp, but also confirmed that the performance of photo-oxidation was significantly influenced by the type of $TiO_2$ catalysts.

  • In this study, we studied the photocatalytic functionality such as deodorant, antibacterial, antistatic of polyester fabrics treated with visible-light responsive photocatalyst. According to UV/visible spectrometry result, the UV-visible peak of visible-light responsive photocatalyst was found to be red shift at 420 nm sensitive in the visible light region. Also, the deodorizing and antimicrobial performance were shown to be retained more than 99% both before washing and even after 25 times washing. According to washing durability of polyester fabrics treated with visible-light responsive photocatalyst, the reduction effects for gas such as ammonia, trimethylamine, formaldehyde and toluene after 25 times washing appeared to be retained as much as before washing. At both before washing and after 25 times washing, antistatic property showed frictional voltage of approximately 250V.
