  • The effects of particle content, size and shape on the thermal conductivity (k) and adhesion properties of thermally conductive, pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were investigated. The matrix resins were thermally crosslinkable, 2-ethylhexyl acrylic polyol and ultraviolet (UV)-curable, random copolymer consisting of acrylic oligomer and various acrylates. We found that k increased with increasing diameter and particle aspect ratio, and was further enhanced due to the reduction of the interfacial thermal barrier when the coupling agent, which increases the adhesion between particles and the matrix resin, was used. On the other hand, adhesion properties such as peel strength and tack of the thermally crosslinkable resin decreased sharply with increasing particle content. However, for UV curable resin, increased particle addition inhibited the decrease in adhesion properties.

  • This study investigates the oxidative degradation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable human carcinogen, by advanced oxidation process (i.e., UV process). The experiments were performed with various pH, initial concentration, UV intensity, and addition of $H_2O_2$ or $TiO_2$ on UV process. The results showed that the direct UV photolysis was the most effective treatment method. The lower pH, intial concentration and higher intensity of UV stimulated higher NDMA removal. However, addition of oxidant ($H_2O_2$, $TiO_2$) slows down photochemical treatment of NDMA since the oxidant can filter out the UV light and block it to reach the NDMA molecules. Dimethylamine (DMA) and nitrite were found to be a major byproduct from NDMA oxidation. To evaluate the chronic toxicity effects of UV-treated NDMA on the growth of microalgae, "Skeletonema costatum", was studied as long term experiments. Results demonstrated that after the 13 days exposure the chronic toxicity was decreased about 15% with application of UV process on NDMA degradation.

  • Several polynorbornene or poly(norbornene-7-oxide) based functional block copolymers were synthesized by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with good molecular weight and polydispersity control. Some representative functional groups in these polymers are a nitrobenzoyl group or ferrocene. These polymers were subjected to various chemical modification reactions to give other block copolymers that contain novel functionality such as amine, diazonium salt, and diazo groups. The resulting polymers were characterized by various techniques such as GPC, NMR, UV-VIS, AFM, and cyclovotammography (CV).

  • Symbiodinium is a dinoflagellate genus that coexists with coral reefs and is known to provide ultraviolet (UV) protection in nature through the synthesis of mycosporin-like amino acids (MAA). In order to develop a natural and ecofriendly sunblock for use in summer resorts, the possibility of using a Symbiodinium microbiome extract or an MAA was investigated. Two sunblocks, one containing 7% Symbiodinium extract and the other containing MAA were prepared to be tested on hairless mice and human skin. In this clinical study, the sun protection factor (SPF) and Protection factor of UV A (PFA) values of the sunblock containing either Symbiodinium extract or MAA were determined. The SPF values of the sunblock containing Symbiodinium extract and MAA were 10.43 and 10.83, respectively, and the PFA values were 3.42 and 3.39, respectively. Based on their PFA values of ≥2, the UV A protection can be graded as PA+ (low) for both the sunblocks. In addition, the UV-blocking extract of Symbiodinium has a low phototoxicity and cytotoxicity, reducing the possibility of a heavy feeling to the skin or a foreign-body sensation caused by residue build-up. The low toxicity feature of the major sunblock component will also prevent side effects, such as allergic reactions. Although Symbiodinium extract or MAA alone do not provide effectiveprotection against UV irradiation, their protection capacity can be complemented by the addition of inorganic UV-protecting compounds.

  • The UV blocking type pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet was developed by mixing UV blocking reagent with adhesive material, instead of conventional method in which the reagent was mixed with PVC substrate. The blocking performance of the sheet was evaluated by measuring the absorbance in 280-400 nm region. Both organic and inorganic type blocking reagents were examined. The blocking ability of the former is better than that of the later. Only 1% addition of blocking reagents is effective to block UV light without affecting to visibility and tackiness of adhesive tapes.

  • In this study, the applications of the block copolymer thin films are introduced. For this purpose, we first obtained cylindrical nanodomains in polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer perpendicularly oriented to a substrate. Then, nanoporous templates were prepared after removing the PMMA nanodomains by UV treatment. By using electropolymerization, high density nanowire arrays of conducting polymer of poly(pyrrole) and poly( 3-hexyl thiopene) were obtained and their electric properties were measured. Also, these nanoporous thin films were found to be very useful for the separation of human Rhinovirus type 14 (HRV 14), major pathogen of a common cold in humans, from the buffer solution.

  • It is important to develop a simple method oftuning localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) properties, due to their numerous applications. In addition, the careful examination of the shape, size and combination of metal nanoparticles is useful for understanding the relation between the LSPR properties and metal nanostructures. This article describes the dependence of theLSPR properties on the arrays of metal nanoparticles obtained from a block copolymer(BCP) micellar thin film. Firstly, two different Au nanostructures, having a dot and ring shape, were fabricated using conventional block copolymer micelle lithography. Then, Ag was plated on the Au nanostructures through the silver mirror reaction technique to obtain Au/Ag bimetallic nanostructures. During the production of these metallic nanostructures, the processing factors, such as the pre-treatment by ethanol, silver mirror reaction time and removal or not of the BCP, were varied. Once the Au nanoparticles were synthesized, Ag was properly plated on the Au, providing two distinguishable characteristic plasmonic bands at around 525nm for Au and around 420nm for Ag, as confirmed bythe UV-vis measurements. However, when a small amount of Au seed nanoparticles, which accelerate the Ag plating speed, was formed by usinga block copolymer with a relatively highmolecular weight, all of the Au surfaces were fully covered by Ag during the silver mirror reaction, showing only the characteristic peak for Ag at around 420nm. The Ag plating technique on Au nanoparticles pre-synthesized from a block copolymer is useful to study the LSPR properties carefully.

  • In this paper, kinematic analysis for a planar 3-DOF redundant stage which has four actuators is presented by using SimMechanics software package. SimMechanics is a block sets of the Matlab/Simulink package. The SimMechanics enables a simplified model for a complex kinematic mechanism, since kinematic relationship between joints and linkages for the kinematic chains are expressed as line vectors and block diagrams. Here, positional error and limit values of movement ranges of the stage are evaluated by using the SimMechanics. The validity of the kinematic characteristics model was compared with theoretical kinematic analyses for the 3-DOF stage.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze potential effects of Koreans' ultraviolet risk awareness and appearance management on their UV protective behaviors in daily life and outdoor activities, and was to investigate in their awareness of UV-protective clothing and their purchase attitudes toward anti-UV protective clothing. To meet the above goals, we have surveyed a total of 262 participants(male and female) residing in Chungcheong province. Findings were as following: As a part of ultraviolet-protective behaviors, it was found that the respondents often relied on applying sun-block cream or shady place before exposition to sunlight. Particularly, it was notable that 30's or older group was more proactive in UV protective behaviors than younger group below 30 years old. There were significant correlations among the respondents' UV protective behaviors, their awareness of anti-UV clothing and their purchase attitudes to anti-UV clothing. Also, there were also significant correlations among their UV-protective means for outdoor activities. That is, more favorable awareness about anti-UV clothing they have is associated with their more active attitudes to purchasing anti-UV clothing and taking anti-sunlight behaviors. It was found that the number of respondents who used cosmetics for outdoor activities was more than that of respondents who used clothing to protect their body from ultraviolet ray. Hence, it will be necessary for follow-up studies to focus on the development and promotion of anti-UV clothing.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid materials have a lot of interest in various areas due to their fascinating properties. To control the location and dispersion of inorganic nanoparticles within polymer matrix. thiol-terminated polymeric ligands have been widely used to tune the surface property of nanoparticles. However, the specific binding between the thiol functional group and metal is unstable with increasing temperature. To archive the thermally-stable Au nanoparticles, we previously synthesized various UV-crosslinkable polymeric ligands, which have different compositions of polar, UV-crosslinkable azide unit comparing to non-polar 스티렌 units. After crosslinking the Au nanoparticles, it was found that the nanoparticles had superb stability at high temperature (above $180^{\circ}C$). In this work, we used thermally-stable Au nanoparticles to control the location within the polymer matrix. By changing the amount of polar azide units in the polymeric ligands, we could precisely control the location of nanoparticles from one domain to the interface of block copolymer templates.
