  • Metamictization and color change in zircons from Cambodia and Tanzania were investigated. Elements analysis to detect radioactivity of elements such as U and Th, and spectroscopic analysis using UV-VIS and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed. According to the UV-VIS spectroscopic analysis, it was perceived that many and high intense absorption peaks appeared in blue and colorless zircons, while less and low intense absorption peaks appeared in uranium contained green and yellow zircons. It was found that those stones have made progress to the metamictization. After heat treatment, we could detect opposite results. As the results of FTIR spectroscopy analysis, in the metamict green and yellow zircon, it is showed that 3-phonon combination mode bands of $[SiO_4]^{4-}$ internal vibration in the region of 3100~3400 $cm^{-1}$ are broad and some of them disappear. However, the disappeared bands are observed again due to restored crystal lattice by the heat treatment. Also, $U^{4+}$ peaks that can detect the uranium content in zircon appears at near 4800 $cm^{-1}$ in the green and yellow samples. From this investigation, we could observe the metamictization effect and color change in uranium-bearing zircon by heat treatment using spectroscopic analysis.

  • Quantitaties of flavonoids were determined by HPLC in three different ethanol extract (50, 70 and 95%, v/v) from Korean cherry. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract and its solvent fraction (ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions) against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 12228) was evaluated using MIC and disk test. Additionally, UV protective effect was also determined. The highest flavonoid quantity was found in 70% ethanol extract of Korean cherry. The quantities of quercitrin were 12.7 mg% and 2.1 mg% in ethyl acetate fraction and in buthanol fraction, respectively. In addition, the flavonoid in 70% (v/v) ethanol extract of Korean cherry included 14.9 mg% of quercitrin, 6.0 mg% of tannic acid and 5.2 mg% of catechin. Therefore, it was confirmed that main flavonoid of Korean cherry was quercitrin. For antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of Korean cherry against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Staphylococcus epidemidis (ATCC 12228), MIC and disk test using ethyl acetate fraction and butanol fraction were carried out. As a result, ethyl acetate fraction with higher quantity of flavonoid showed higher antimicrobial activity. Therefore, it was confirmed that the higher antimicrobial activity was brought about by flavonoid in Korean cherry. For UV protective effect of Korean cherry, ethanol extract showed the absorption zone of ultraviolet rays in 210∼380 nm including 290∼320 nm that is the wave length of UV-B harmful to the skin of human body. The pattern is the same as the absorption zone of 220∼300 nm in catechin and 210∼400 nm in quercitrin. Then, the functionalities of catechin and quercitrin were anticipated. It is expected that quercitrin in Korean cherry has the antimicrobial effect and UV protective effect related to the skin.

  • We investigated characterization as cosmetic substances of chestnut inner skin extracts with in vitro antioxidant activity. Total phenolics of various extracts from chestnut inner skin were the highest 60% methanol (164.82 mg/g), and ethyl acetate fractions (191.14 mg/g). We found that the both samples from chestnut inner skin dose-dependently increased in vitro antioxidant activities (DPPH radical scavenging activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation). In addition, the both samples also showed a strong UV absorption in the range of UV-B (290-320 nm). Especially the 60% ethanol extracts presented higher inhibitory effect on elastase (46.40% at $100{\mu}g/mL$) than that of the ethyl acetate fractions, so that it showed in vitro anti-wrinkle activity. Finally, the 60% methanol extracts and ethyl acetate fractions showed anti-bacterial activity against skin pathogenic bacteria. Consequently, these results suggest that the chestnut inner skin can be used for cosmetic industry.

  • UV-visible absorption measurement techniques using several horizone viewing directions in addition to the traditional zenith-sky pointing have been recently developed in ground-based remote sensing of atmospheric constituents. The spatial distribution of various trace gases close to the instrument can be derived by combing several viewing directions. Multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) technique, one of the remote sensing techniques for air quality measurements, uses the scattered sunlight as a light source and measures it at various elevation angles (corresponding to the viewing directions) by sequential scanning with a stepper motor. A MAX-DOAS system developed by GIST/ADEMRC has been applied to measuring trace gases in urban air and plumes of the volcano and fossil fuel power plant in January, May, and October 2004, respectively. MAX-DOAS spectra were analyzed to identify and quantify $SO_2,\;NO_2,\;BrO,\;and\;O_4$ (based on Slant Column Densities, SCD) in the urban air, volcanic plume, and fossil fuel power plant utilizing theirs specific structured absorption features in the UV-visible region. Vertical scan through the multiple elevation angles was performed at different directions perpendicular to the plume dispersion to retrieve cross-sectional distribution of $SO_2\;or\;NO_2$ in the plumes of the volcano and fossil fuel power plant. Based on the estimated cross sections of the plumes the mixing ratios were estimated to 580 $SO_2$ ppbv in the volcanic Plume, and 337 $NO_2\;and\;227\;SO_2$ ppbv in the plume of the fossil fuel power plant, respectively.

  • We synthesized three copolymers bearing photochromic spiropyran dye and chalcone moiety in the side chain for studying the dynamic properties of their photochromism. They contain methacrylate-spiropyran (MAspiropyran) and methacrylate-chalcone (MA-chalcone) with the different concentration. The photosensitivity of the newly synthesized copolymers was investigated by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. We observed photodimerization and photochromic behavior under UV irradiation at the same time. The effect of photocrosslink on the rate and stability of photochromism in three copolymers was considered in this study. This study might be helpful to design photochromic materials for irreversible optical memory by virtue of photocrosslinking reaction.

  • The derivative of chrysin 7-O-cyclopropanecarboxylate was synthesized by condensing cyclopropanecarboxylic acid with chrysin in organic solvent, and its structure was identified by NMR, MS, UV IR etc. We also investigated the physico-chemical properties, anti-diabetic effect and set up the quantitative analytical method of this compound. The correlation coefficient of calibration curve on this compound was approximately 0.9985 by absorption spectrophotometry. And, this study was carried out to investigate the hair-growth effect of chrysin derivative to the black mouse (C57BL/6). When this derivative in ethanol solution was administered to the back of mouse by method of skin paste, this derivative promoted the hair growth of mouse.

  • The chemical behavior for Mo(0) and W(0) complexes, [M(CO)$_2$(PPh$_3$)$_4$] (M=Mo and W),has been investigated by UV-vis spectroscopic, magnetic, and electrochemical methods. Three absorption bands are observed in the UV-spectra. The crystal-field-splitti ng energy, spin-pairing energy, and bond strengths were deduced from the spectra. The metal d electrons in both complexes seemed to be delocalized in low-spin state.Metal ligand correlation appeared to strongly depend on bond strengths and diamagnetic properties. In electrochemical processes, both complexes exhibit an irreversible reduction wave.

  • A newly developed silkworm variety, GoldenSilk makes bright yellow cocoon. In this article, the basic characteristics of GoldenSilk cocoon were examined through color analysis, degumming characteristics and UV spectrophotometer. The colorant of GoldenSilk cocoon was not distributed evenly throughout the cocoon layer but existed in the outer layer of the cocoon. The colorant has not good resistance against sunlight. The degumming loss percentage of GoldenSilk cocoon was 29.2%, which is relatively higher than that of the authorized one. UV spectrophotometer showed specific absorption band around 400 to 500 nm, which is the specific yellow colorant of the GoldenSilk cocoon extracted to the degumming solution during the degumming process.
