Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with the development of extrinsic skin aging. We performed in vivo assays in order to investigate the protective effect of a combination of grapefruit and rosemary extracts (cG&Re) on UVB-induced skin aging. The results indicated that cG&Re displayed elastase inhibitory activity in a dose-dependent manner. Topical application of cG&Re mitigated photo-aging related lesions such as skin erythema and thickening in photo-aged BALB/c mice dorsal skin, by preventing UVB-induced collagen degradation. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that cG&Re stimulated SIRT-1 expression, and suppressed MMP-1 and $IL-1{\beta}$ expression. It was observed that expression of MMP-1 and -13 mRNA was downregulated in the cG&Re-treated group. Furthermore, cG&Re treatment drastically suppressed protein expression of MMP-1 and regulated the phosphorylation of p-38 kinase. As expected, oral administration of cG&Re resulted in the same SIRT-1, MMP-1, and $IL-1{\beta}$ expression patterns observed upon topical application of cG&Re in the UV-induced mice model. Overall, the current results demonstrated that cG&Re attenuated both the downregulation of MMP-1 expression and up-regulation of SIRT-1 expression, as well as decreased phosphorylation of MAPK in UVB-induced skin ageing mice model, suggesting that cG&Re might be used as an internal food ingredient for beauty-purposes as well as a functional food material.

Photocurable binder for a transparent glass fiber composite was prepared with alicyclic methacrylate and fluorene-based diacrylate. ANOVA (analysis of variance) analysis was used to know main factors affecting the conversion of photocurable binder. It showed radiation intensity and photoinitiator (PI) concentration were main factors. The conversion of photocurable binder was simply increased with radiation intensity. Its increment however was abated with increasing PI concentration. We found that average conversion of the binder measured by FTIR-ATR was 87% when it was exposed to $5J/cm^2$ of UV dose with 5 wt% of PI. Oxime ester type PI was very effective to get a high degree of conversion, but it caused a yellowing problem. Owing to post-baking process, UV cured film showed an improved thermal stability by increase of conversion and removal of volatile organic compounds. TG% at $260^{\circ}C$ of film cured with 5 wt% of PI (TPO+MBF) and $5J/cm^2$ of UV radiation increased from 95.4 to 99.0% by post-baking at $230^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.

PURPOSE. Maxillofacial silicone elastomer is usually colored intrinsically with color pigments to match skin colors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the color stability of a maxillofacial silicone elastomer, colored with a thermochromic, color changing pigment. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disc-shaped maxillofacial silicone specimens were prepared and divided into 3 groups: a conventionally colored control group, one group additionally colored with 0.2 wt% thermochromic pigment, and one group with 0.6 wt% thermochromic pigment. Half of the surface of each specimen was covered with an aluminium foil. All of the specimens were exposed to UV radiation in 6 hour cycles over 46 days. In between the UV exposures, half of the specimens were stored in darkness, at room temperature, and the other half was stored in an incubator, at a humidity of 97% and a temperature of $+37^{\circ}C$. Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer and registered according to the CIELAB $L^*a^*b^*$ color model system. The changes in $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values during artificial aging were statistically analyzed by using paired samples t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. P-values <.05 were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS. The UV exposure resulted in visually noticeable and statistically significant color changes in the $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values in both of the test groups containing thermochromic pigment. Storage in the incubator lead to statistically significant color changes in the $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of the specimens containing thermochromic pigment, compared to those stored at room temperature. CONCLUSION. The specimens containing thermochromic pigment were very sensitive to UV radiation, and the thermochromic pigment is not suitable, as such, to be used in maxillofacial prostheses.
The far-ultraviolet (FUV) H2 and C IV emission images and spectra of Orion Eridanus Superbubble (OES) is hereby presented. The OES seems to consists of multiple phase through the detection of highly-ionized gas and pervasive neutral hydrogen. The former is traced by hot gas while the latter is traced by cold medium. A spectral image made with H2 fluorescent emission shows that the spatial distribution of hydrogen molecule is well correlated with the dust map. The model spectra was taken from a photodissociation region (PDR) radiation code which find a best suitable parameter such as hydrogen density, gas temperature and incident uv intensity of the radiation field. C IV emission is caused by intermediate temperature ISM about 10^4.5 K~10^6 K. Therefore we could get more clear evidence to reveal the structure of OES. Feature of spectra for the each sub region is also presented and discussed. The data were obtained with the Far-Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FIMS) and the whole data handling were followed by previous FIMS analysis.

Resonance radiation trapping has a great influence on the characteristics of vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) photon emissions in AC PDP cell. We calculate the spatial andspectral distributions of VUV photons, which are radiated by excited Xe in AC PDP cell by Monte Carlo method. Especially a dip in the spectrum at center frequency is discovered both in simulation and in experiment. We give a physical explanation of this phenomenon by the concept of frequency-dependent mean free path of VUV photons.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a major cause of photodamages to human skin and the immediate responses of the skin to UV include the erythema and edema. In an attempt to find effective UV-protecting agents to be used in cosmetics, a number of plant extracts were screened in the cell-based assays. Among the total of 38 plant extracts tested, 3 plant extracts derived from Sasa quelpaertensis, Althaea rosea, and Dryopteris crassirhizoma attenuated the UVB-induced cytotoxicity as well as melanin synthesis in cultured human epidermal melanocytes. The anti-inflammatory effects of these plant extracts were further examined in animal models. A control or test cream containing 1% of a plant extract was topically applied to ears of a C57BL/6 mouse or the dorsal skin of a SKH-1 hafirless mouse before and after the exposure to UVB. The change in ear thickness or dorsal skin redness due to UVB exposure was determined to monitor edema and erythema, respectively. All three test creams exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in both experiments. The creams containing Sasa quelpaertensis, Althaea rosea or Dryopteris crassirhizoma extract alleviated the UVB-induced edema response on day 4 by 53.8 %, 56.4 % and 31.1 %, respectively. They also inhibited the erythema formation on day 2 by 45.7 %, 34.1 % and 20.5 %, respectively. This study suggests that the selected plant extracts formulated in cosmetics may attenuate skin inflammation caused by overexposure to UV.
Human ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), which has a DNA repair endonuclease activity, is a multifunctional protein. This protein is involved in DNA repair, translation, and apoptosis. In particular, rpS3 has a lyase activity, which cleaves the phosphodiester bond of damaged sites such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and AP sites. Here, using deletion analysis, we identified that the repair endonuclease domain resides in the C-terminal region (165-243 aa) of rpS3. We also found that ectopic expression of GST-rpS3 in bacterial strain BL21 promoted the resistance of these cells to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and hydrogen peroxide ($H_{2}O_{2}$) treatment. The repair domain of rpS3 was sufficient to exhibit the resistance to UV irradiation and recover cell growth and viability, showing that the repair activity of rpS3 is responsible for the resistance to UV irradiation. Our study suggests that rpS3 is able to process DNA damage in bacteria via its repair domain, showing the resistance to genotoxic stress. This implies that rpS3-like activity could be operative in bacteria.

In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) on the high temperature annealing condition after grating inscription using a KrF UV laser (248 nm). The FBGs were fabricated in a different annealing temperature using the same commercial Ge-doped silica core fiber (SMF-28e) and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 31 kGy at the dose rate of 115 Gy/min. The high temperature annealing procedure for grating stabilization was applied to change the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the gratings that were stabilized at different temperatures at 100, 150 and $200^{\circ}C$ have clearly shown that exposure to higher temperatures increases their radiation sensitivity. The radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) was shown a difference of up to about a factor of two depending on the annealing temperature conditions of the gratings.
Ultraviolet(UV) radiation causes a variety of biological effects on the skin, including inflammation, pigmentation, photoaging and cancer. Free radicals are involved in inflammatory skin reactions induced by UVB radiation. In this study, we investigated the effects of antioxidants(Tea, Korean red ginseng, Ginkgo biloba extract) on UVB-induced skin damage. Tea, KRG and EGb 761 were topically treated to dorsal skin of ICR mouse. The mice were also treated soon after IMED ($1.4KJ/m^{2}$) of UVB irradiation. Skin pigmentation of irradiated mouse was observed by a chromameter after 2 weeks. Topical application of Tea, KRG and EGb 761 for 2 weeks decreased skin pigmentation compared to DVB control group(p<.05). Tea, KRG and EGb 761 also reduced UVB-induced infiltration of inflammatory cells. These results showed that Tea, KRG and EGb 761 as a topical application may have preventive effect against UVB-induced skin damage.
