Recently, one of the authors has been reported an optically tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a photomechanical polymer. It was based on a typical FBG with a downsized diameter of 60 ㎛, coated with azobenzene-containing polymer material. Azobenzene is a well-known reversibly photomechanical stretchable material under ultraviolet (UV) light. The small part of the functional-coating region on the FBG absorbed UV light, which pulled the UV-exposed part of the grating. It was selectable as tunable FBG or tunable chirped FBG, by adjusting the position of UV exposure on the grating. As proof of concept for the tunable FBG device, the characteristics just including UV-induced center-wavelength shift and spectral-width changes of the device were reported. In this paper, we report for the first time that the microactuator makes it possible to control the spectral shape of the FBG reflection, according to the specifications (shape and intensity) of the UV beam that reaches the FBG coated with the azobenzene polymer. In addition, we provide the group-delay profiles for the chirped FBG, so that the sign of its dispersion (normal or anomalous) can be tailored by simply selecting the moving direction of the UV light's displacement in the experiment.
Films with special properties (e.g., water-repellent films, optical films, anti-reflection films, and flexible films) are referred to as functional films. Recently, there has been interest in fine patterning methods for film fabrication. In particular there have been many studies that use a UV nanoimprint process involving a UV curing method. In this paper, a polymer film was fabricated by the UV nanoimprint process with a micro-pattern, and its durability was evaluated by a wear test and a nano-indentation test. The film mechanical properties (such as coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity) were measured. Moreover, the choice of PUA type resin used in the UV nanoimprint process was confirmed to impact the durability of the thin film. Despite making the polymer film samples using the same method and PUA type resin, different coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity values were obtained. PUA 4 resin had the most favorable coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity. This material is predicted to produce a high durability functional film.
In this paper, we introduced a novel voxel-wise UV parameterization and view-dependent texture synthesis for the immersive rendering of a truncated signed distance field (TSDF) scene model. The proposed UV parameterization delegates a precomputed UV map to each voxel using the UV map lookup table and consequently, enabling efficient and high-quality texture mapping without a complex process. By leveraging the convenient UV parameterization, our view-dependent texture synthesis method extracts a set of local texture maps for each voxel from the multiview color images and separates them into a single view-independent diffuse map and a set of weight coefficients for an orthogonal specular map basis. Furthermore, the view-dependent specular maps for an arbitrary view are estimated by combining the specular weights of each source view using the location of the arbitrary and source viewpoints to generate the view-dependent textures for arbitrary views. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively synthesizes texture for an arbitrary view, thereby enabling the visualization of view-dependent effects, such as specularity and mirror reflection.
We report the microwave reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ of copper(II)-phthalocyanine(CuPc) using a near-field microwave microscope(NSMM) in order to understand the intrinsic electromagnetic properties of organic materials. For a NSMM system, a high-quility microstip resonator coupled with a dielectric resonator was used. The reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ was changed by the preparation conditions of CuPc thin films. We compared the reflection coefficient with crystal phase, surface morphology, UV absorption spectra and x-ray diffraction results.
The attenuation of starlight by dust in galactic environments is investigated through models of radiative transfer in a spherical, clumpy interstellar medium (ISM). We show that the attenuation curves are primarily determined by the wavelength dependence of absorption rather than by the underlying extinction (absorption+scattering) curve; the observationally derived attenuation curves cannot constrain a unique extinction curve unless the absorption or scattering efficiency is specified. Attenuation curves consistent with the Calzetti curve are found by assuming the silicate-carbonaceous dust model for the Milky Way (MW), but with the $2175{\AA}$ bump suppressed or absent. The discrepancy between our results and previous work that claimed the Small Magellanic Cloud dust to be the origin of the Calzetti curve is ascribed to the difference in adopted albedos; we use the theoretically calculated albedos whereas the previous ones adopted empirically derived albedos from observations of reflection nebulae. It is found that the model attenuation curves calculated with the MW dust are well represented by a modified Calzetti curve with a varying slope and UV bump strength. The strong correlation between the slope and UV bump strength, as found in star-forming galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.0, is well reproduced if the abundance of the UV bump carriers is assumed to be 30-40% of that of the MW-dust; radiative transfer effects lead to shallower attenuation curves with weaker UV bumps as the ISM is more clumpy and dustier. We also argue that some of local starburst galaxies have a UV bump in their attenuation curves, albeit very weak.
A total internal reflection (TIR) linear lens of size $190(W){\times}5(D){\times}2.1(H)mm^3$ has a directivity of $25^{\circ}$ and was made of a polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) silicone resin with a refractive index of 1.4 and a transmittance of 93% at 365 nm UV wavelength. A light source with a size of $190{\times}25.5mm^2$ was fabricated by installing a TIR linear lens on a chip on board (COB) type LED module mounted with a $1.1{\times}1.1mm^2$ size UV LED. The optical characteristics of the light source showed a maximum irradiation density of $3,840mW/cm^2$ at a working distance of 5 mm and a high uniformity of 91.6% over a $150{\times}25mm^2$ irradiation area. The thermal characteristics of the light source were measured at a supply current of 500 mA. The saturation temperature was reached after 30 min of operation, and measured to be $95^{\circ}C$.
