  • Recently, as the roles and utilization fields of UAV become more diverse, demand for high - level mission has been increasing. To solve this issue, researches on the operation of multiple small UAVs and related systems have been actively carried out. The multiple small UAVs based application system has a problem that the task complexity of control personnel increases because the control personnel must continuously control and manage several small UAVs. Hence, it is necessary to develop a software platform that can perform efficient control in order to employ a multiple small UAVs based application system successfully. In this paper, we propose an effective ground control software platform for application systems using multiple small UAVs. We first analyze the requirements for the software platform, and design and implement software based on the analysis. Simulation using the X-plane flight simulator shows that multiple flight data are effectively displayed and that the image data transmitted from many small UAVs are simultaneously displayed in real time.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for the construction of LTE-based small unmanned aerial vehicle control system to quickly and reliably collect multiple small unmanned aerial vehicle position information simultaneously flying all over the country. In particular, the main requirements are the network (N/W), hardware (H/ W), software(SW), Database(DB), development architecture, and business needs. To satisfy these requirements, N/W, H/W, SW, DB design, and architectural design plan were suggested regarding the design requirements of a small UAV system. To effectively control the small unmanned multi-party system in the system design, the architecture is divided into the front-end service area and the back-end service area according to the function and role of the unit system. In the front-end service area that grasps and controls the position and state of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we have studied the design part that can be expanded to N through TCP/IP network by applying Client PC method.

  • In this paper, we present how to create a point cloud for a target area using multiple unmanned aerial vehicle images and to remove the gaps and overlapping points between datasets. For this purpose, first, IBA (Incremental Bundle Adjustment) technique was applied to correct the position and attitude of UAV platform. We generate a point cloud by using MDR (Multi-Dimensional Relaxation) matching technique. Next, we register point clouds based on observation vectors between stereo images by doing this we remove gaps between point clouds which are generated from different stereo pairs. Finally, we applied an occupancy grids based integration algorithm to remove duplicated points to create an integrated point cloud. The experiments were performed using UAV images, and our experiments show that it is possible to remove gaps and duplicate points between point clouds generated from different stereo pairs.

  • Every year in the ocean, various accidents occur frequently and illegal fishing is rampant. Moreover, their size and frequency are also increasing. In order to reduce losses of life or property caused by these, it is necessary to have a means to perform remote monitoring quickly. As an effective platform of such monitoring means, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is receiving the spotlight. In these situations where marine accidents or illegal fishing occur, main targets of monitoring are ships. In this study, we propose a UAV based ship monitoring system and suggest a method of determining ship positions using UAV multi-sensory data. In the proposed method, firstly, the position and attitude of individual images are determined by using the pre-performed system calibration results and GPS/INS data obtained at the time when images were acquired. In addition, after the ship being detected automatically or semi-automatically from the individual images, the absolute coordinates of the detected ships are determined. The proposed method was applied to actual data measured at 200 m, 350 m, and 500 m altitude, the ship position can be determined with accuracy of 4.068 m, 8.916 m, and 13.734 m, respectively. According to the minimum standard of a hydrographical survey, the ship positioning results of 200 m and 350 m data satisfy grade S and the results of 500 m data do grade 1a, where the accuracy is required for positioning the coastline and topography less significant to navigation order. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed method can be effectively used for various purposes of marine monitoring or surveying.

  • The application of a reliable motion simulator can contribute effectively in the evaluation of the performance of a vehicle platform in the development stage of a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Therefore, the research on a reliable motion simulator can accelerate the development of UAV and decrease the relevant cost. In this paper, the design factors considered in the preliminary design stage of a 6 degree-of freedom motion simulator are defined and the motion range of the simulator is described on the basis of these design factors. The length, acceleration, and the required thrust of actuators with respect to the motion simulator under development are also predicted. The motion range can be increased and a suitable actuator can be selected and produced by applying these results in the manufacturing process of the motion simulator. Thus, the reliability of the motion simulators can be achieved during the actual design operation of the UAV.

  • Building change monitoring based on building detection is one of the most important fields in terms of monitoring artificial structures using high-resolution multi-temporal images such as CAS500-1 and 2, which are scheduled to be launched. However, not only the various shapes and sizes of buildings located on the surface of the Earth, but also the shadows or trees around them make it difficult to detect the buildings accurately. Also, a large number of misdetection are caused by relief displacement according to the azimuth and elevation angles of the platform. In this study, object-based building detection was performed using the azimuth angle of the Sun and the corresponding main direction of shadows to improve the results of building change detection. After that, the platform's azimuth and elevation angles were used to detect changed buildings. The object-based segmentation was performed on a high-resolution imagery, and then shadow objects were classified through the shadow intensity, and feature information such as rectangular fit, Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) homogeneity and area of each object were calculated for building candidate detection. Then, the final buildings were detected using the direction and distance relationship between the center of building candidate object and its shadow according to the azimuth angle of the Sun. A total of three methods were proposed for the building change detection between building objects detected in each image: simple overlay between objects, comparison of the object sizes according to the elevation angle of the platform, and consideration of direction between objects according to the azimuth angle of the platform. In this study, residential area was selected as study area using high-resolution imagery acquired from KOMPSAT-3 and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Experimental results have shown that F1-scores of building detection results detected using feature information were 0.488 and 0.696 respectively in KOMPSAT-3 image and UAV image, whereas F1-scores of building detection results considering shadows were 0.876 and 0.867, respectively, indicating that the accuracy of building detection method considering shadows is higher. Also among the three proposed building change detection methods, the F1-score of the consideration of direction between objects according to the azimuth angles was the highest at 0.891.

  • The detection of illegal ship is one of the key factors in building a marine surveillance system. Effective marine surveillance requires the means for continuous monitoring over a wide area. In this study, the possibility of ship detection monitoring based on satellite SAR, HF radar, UAV and AIS integration was investigated. Considering the characteristics of time and spatial resolution for each platform, the ship monitoring scenario consisted of a regular surveillance system using HFR data and AIS data, and an event monitoring system using satellites and UAVs. The regular surveillance system still has limitations in detecting a small ship and accuracy due to the low spatial resolution of HF radar data. However, the event monitoring system using satellite SAR data effectively detects illegal ships using AIS data, and the ship speed and heading direction estimated from SAR images or ship tracking information using HF radar data can be used as the main information for the transition to UAV monitoring. For the validation of monitoring scenario, a comprehensive field experiment was conducted from June 25 to June 26, 2019, at the west side of Hongwon Port in Seocheon. KOMPSAT-5 SAR images, UAV data, HF radar data and AIS data were successfully collected and analyzed by applying each developed algorithm. The developed system will be the basis for the regular and event ship monitoring scenarios as well as the visualization of data and analysis results collected from multiple platforms.

  • Mobile robots are used for years as a valuable research and educational tool in form of available open-platform designs and Do-It-Yourself kits. Rapid development and costs reduction of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and ground based mobile robots in recent years allowed researchers to utilize them as an affordable research platform. Despite of recent developments in the area of ground and airborne robotics, only few examples of Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) platforms targeted for research purposes can be found. Aim of this paper is to present the development of open-design USV drone with integrated multi-level control hardware architecture. Proposed catamaran - type water surface drone enables direct control over wireless radio link, separate development of algorithms for optimal propulsion control, navigation and communication with the ground-based control station. Whole design is highly modular, where each component can be replaced or modified according to desired task, payload or environmental conditions. Developed USV is planned to be utilized as a part of the system for detection and identification of marine and lake waste. Cameras mounted to the USV would record sea or lake surfaces, and recorded video sequences and images would be processed by state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning algorithms in order to identify and classify marine and lake waste.

  • One of the frequent problems in the stabilized gimbal system is the rejection of disturbances associated with moving components. Very often such disturbances have non-linear characteristics. In a typical gimbal system, each gimbal and platform are connected by a mutual bearing which induces inevitable friction. Particularly, the non-linear Coulomb friction causes position errors as well as slow responses that lead to unfavorable performance. In this paper, a modified PID controller that is augmented by Coulomb friction estimator is presented. Through constantly estimating the Coulomb friction torque, it is applied to the output of the existing PID controller. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is evaluated through a series of experiments.
