  • To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with glass fiber sheets, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams (4 NU-beams without U-shaped band and 4 U-beams with U-shaped band) are tested. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of glass fiber sheets and the existence of U-shaped band, etc. The maximum load was increased by 48% and 34%, and the flexural rigidity by 920% and 880% for NU-beam and U-beam, respectively, compared with those of the control beam. The ductility ratios were 1.43$\sim$2.60 for NU-beam and U-beam. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without U-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. The experimental results are compared with the analytical results of nonlinear flexural behaviors for strengthened RC beam. The experimental and analytical results were well agreed.

  • In this paper, a triple-band U-shaped monopole antenna with T-shaped stub for WLAN(Wireless Local Area Networks)/WiMAX(World interoperability for Microwave Access) applications. The proposed antenna is based on a planar monopole design, and composed of U-shaped of radiating patch, T-shaped strip in U-shaped, for triple-band operation. To obtain the optimized parameters, we used the simulator, Ansoft's High Frequency Structure Simulator(HFSS) and found the parameters that greatly effect antenna characteristics. Using the obtained parameters, the antenna is fabricated. The numerical and experiment results demonstrated that the proposed antenna satisfied the -10 dB impedance bandwidth requirement while simultaneously covering the WLAN and WiMAX bands. And characteristics of gain and radiation patterns are determined for WLAN/WiMAX application.

  • A compact ultra-wide band antenna with a quadruple band-notched characteristic is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a slotted trapezoid patch radiator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, a pair of C-shaped band stop filters, and a rectangular ground plane. To realize the quadruple notch-band characteristic, a U-shaped slot, a complementary split ring resonator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, and two C-shaped band stop filters are utilized in this antenna. The antenna satisfies the -10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth requirement in the frequency band of 2.88-12.67 GHz, with a band-rejection characteristic in the WiMAX (3.43-3.85 GHz), WLAN (5.26-6.01 GHz), X-band satellite communication (7.05-7.68 GHz), and ITU 8 GHz (8.08-8.87 GHz) signal bands. In addition, the proposed antenna has a compact volume of $30mm{\times}33.5mm{\times}0.8mm$ while maintaining omnidirectional patterns in the H-plane. The experimental and simulated results of the proposed antenna are shown to be in good agreement.

  • This study is investigate the bending behavior of real size RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. For experimental study, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams of real size(4 NU-beams and 4 U-beams) are tested and compared. NU-beam has not a V-shaped band and V-beam has a V-shaped band. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets, the existence of U-shaped band, and four point loading, etc. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without V-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. For the strengthening method with carbon fiber sheets of the real size RC beams, it is required the finding a solution to the bonding problem.

  • A compact planar microstrip-fed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with a dual band-notched for UWB application is presented and analyzed. By inserting a U-shaped slot and inverted U-shaped slot into the pot-shaped radiator, two notched bands are achieved. By optimizing the width and length of the U-shaped slots and inverted U-shaped slot, a desired bandwidth of voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2.0 can be achieved, ranging from UWB bands with notched dual bands. The proposed antenna is fabricated on an inexpensive FR-4 substrate with overall dimensions of $28.0mm{\times}39.5mm$. The measured results confirm that the proposed antenna covers from 1.775 to over 13.075 GHz with two rejection bands of around 3.325-3.925 GHz and 5.3125-6.025 GHz. In addition, the proposed antenna showed good radiation characteristics and gains in the UWB bands.

  • This paper proposes a dual-band bandpass filter using stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs) with parallel coupled structures. The proposed filter adopts U-shaped SIRs with parallel coupled lines (PCLs) that have interdigital and comb-line shorted ends. The central PCLs build an upper passband and a transmission zero, and the two U-shaped SIRs build a lower passband. Four resonators and coupling structures are theoretically analyzed to derive its scattering parameters. A novel dual-band bandpass filter is designed and fabricated using the induced scattering characteristics. The measured results show that the fabricated dual-band bandpass filter has an insertion loss of less than 1.02 dB in the lower band of 2.45 GHz and of 3.01 dB in the upper band of 3.42 GHz, and a band-to-band isolation of more than 40 dB, from 3.14 to 3.2 GHz.

  • In this paper, a multiple U-shaped slot antenna on 5㎓ band is designed, fabricated, and measured. The prototype consists of a U-shaped slot and two Invert U-shaped slot. To obtain wide bandwidth, the foam layer is inserted between ground plane and substrate. After various parameters, length, width, position of U-shaped slot horizontal, interval length between two invert U-shaped slot, feeding position and airgap width, optimized, a multiple U-shaped slot antenna is fabricated and measured. The measured results of the antenna are compared with its simulated results. A 2:1 VSWR impedance bandwidth of 20.4% is achiedved by employing this technique. The gain is about 5.5㏈i. The experimental far-field patterns are stable across the pass band.

  • In this paper, we proposed a broadband U-shaped RFID tag antenna with near-isotropic characteristic at UHF band. The proposed tag antenna is composed of the U-shaped half wavelength dipole and a rectangular shaped feed. The rectangular shaped feed that is located inside U-shaped dipole is connected for conjugate impedance matching with the commercial tag chip. A better constant gain deviation characteristic in the operating frequency band is achieved by inserting a rectangular slit in the lower center of the U-shaped antenna body. On the condition of VSWR<2, the tag antenna had the measured bandwidth of 10.36%, from 860.5 to 954.5 MHz, and 9.84%, from 864.5 to 954 MHz, for antenna without slit and with slit, respectively. On the condition of VSWR<5.8, the tag antennas had the measured bandwidth of 15.78%, from 835.5 to 979.5 MHz, and 15.89%, from 837 to 981.5 MHz, for antenna without slit and with slit, respectively. The difference between the maximum and minimum gain deviations of tag antenna without slit in the operating frequency band is 0.53 dB since the maximum and minimum gain deviations are 3.86 dB and 3.33 dB, respectively. Whereas the difference between the maximum and minimum gain deviations of tag antenna with slit in the operating frequency is 0.06 dB since the maximum and minimum gain deviations are 3.60 dB and 3.54 dB, respectively.
