Fall-cone testing of different size/shape sands treated with a biopolymer

  • This paper presents a study on the undrained shear strength (su) of various sands treated with a biopolymer by employing an extensive series of laboratory fall-cone penetration values covered a range of about 15 mm to 25 mm. In the tests, two sizes (0.15 mm-0.30 mm, and 1.0 mm-2.0 mm) and shapes (rounded, angular) of sand grains, Xanthan gum (XG), and distilled water were used. The XG biopolymer in 0.0%, 1.0%, 2.0%, and 3.0% by dry weight were mixed separately with four different sands, and water. The tests results obtained at the same water content revealed an increase in the su values at different levels with an increase in the XG content. Treating the sands with the XG biopolymer addition was concluded to have a greater efficacy on finer and more angular grains than coarser and more rounded grains in the samples. Overall, the present study indicates that different amount of the XG biopolymer has an important potential to be utilized for increasing the su values of samples with various size/shape of sand grains and water content.

FPSO의 횡요 감쇠 장치에 대한 고찰 (A Study on Roll Reduction Devices for FPSOs)

  • Several roll motion reduction devices are reviewed and suggested for the application in FPSO. The firstly suggested solution is the shape of the bilge. The next is a bilge keel. The last suggestion is the ART (anti-rolling tank). Typical U-tube type ART is designed for a FPSO and examined extensively by model experiment. The model section was made of transparent acryl. Free decay test, forced oscillation test and wave test were carried out at a two-dimensional wave flume. U-tube type ART is effective only when the natural periods of ART and ship are same. Therefore, the divided U-tube type ART with split plate is suggested for the reduction of the roll motion of a FPSO over the wide range of the roll period.

  • Dynamic Milling (DM) 방법에 의한 $UO_2$ 분말의 특성 변화가 밀도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다 분쇄시간(0∼8시간)의 증가에 따라 분말입자의 크기는 감소하며 둥근 형태를 지녔으며, 비표면적과 O/U 비는 증가하였다. 이러한 특성 변화에 의해 성형밀도는 증가한 반면에, 소결밀도는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 소결밀도의 감소는 분말 분쇄과정에서 야기된 $UO_2$ 분말의 O/U 비의 증가가 주된 영향을 미친 것으로 사료된다.

  • Along with the steady development of Korean Railway construction technology, Contemporary society needs more modernized structures which can meet not only structural value but also aesthetic and environmental value. To follow this demand of society, Pre-Stressed Concrete U-girder bridge(Somg-Lim Gyo, L=330m) is introduced in 'JINJOO-KWANGYANG RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT'. On the environmental point of view, the huge noise due to the operation of train can be reduced remarkably by the side beam of U-girder which is high enough to substitute soundproofing wall. Moreover, by aesthetic variation of the shape of outer beams and coping of piers, the exterior view of the bridge can be improved and in accordance with surroundings. Pre-Stressed Concrete U-Girders which are built up above the outer sides of slab deck make easier to secure the clearance of a bridge and make it possible to lower the distance of centroid between superstructure and railroad tracks.

중공철근으로 보강한 U-플랜지 트러스 복합보의 구조 내력에 관한 실험연구 (Experimental Study on the Structural Capacity of the U-flanged Truss Hybrid Beam with Hollow Rebars)

  • A typical low and medium-sized neighborhood living facility in reinforced concrete building secures a high floor and pursues an efficient module plan(long span). Accordingly, research on the development of new hybrid beams that can innovatively reduce labor costs such as on-site installation and assembly while securing strength and rigidity is ongoing. In order to verify the structural performance of the U-flanged truss composite beam with newly developed shape, Experiments with various variables are required. Based on the results, this study is to evaluate the strength of U-flanged truss hybrid beam through the flexural strength of the Korea Design Code and experimental values. It was evaluated that nominal flexural strength was 110% to 135% higher than the experimental value.

  • 대장암의 조기 발견과 치료를 위해서는 정확한 폴립의 분할이 중요하나 다음과 같은 제약이 따른다. 개별 폴립의 위치, 크기 및 모양이 서로 상이하며, 모션 흐림 및 빛 반사와 같은 특정 상황에서 폴립과 주변 환경 간에 상당한 정도의 유사성이 존재한다. 인코더와 디코더 역할을 하는 Convolutional Neural Networks로 구성된 U-net은 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 다양하게 사용된다. 본 연구는 보다 정확한 폴립 분할을 위한 비전트랜스포머가 포함된 U-net 아키텍처를 제안하였고, 그 결과 제안된 방식은 표준 U-net 아키텍처보다 더 나은 성능을 보였음을 확인할 수 있었다.

두 층 마이크로스트립 구조를 이용한 대역통과 여파기 설계 (Design of a Bandpass Filter using Two Layer Microstrip Structure)

  • 본 논문에서는 두 층 마이크로스트립 구조를 이용한 공진기 구조를 제안하고, 이를 이용해 대역통과 여파기를 설계하였다. 제안된 공진기 구조는 첫 번째 층에 전송선로를 U자형으로 꺽은 헤어핀형태의 공진기를 위치시키고, 두 번째 층에는 첫 번째 층 전송선로의 끝 부분 바로 위에 broadside 결합구조를 위치시킨 형태이다. 이러한 구조는 일반적인 결합선로를 이용한 단일 층 여파기에 비해 설계변수가 다양하기 때문에 여파기 설계가 훨씬 수월하다. 본 논문에서는 강한 결합특성 때문에 광 대역 여파기에만 적용되어왔던 다층구조를 이용해 협 대역 여파기를 구현하였다. 중심주파수 4 ㎒, 부분대역폭 3 % 인 여파기를 구현하였으며, 제작과 측정을 통해 다층기판으로 협 대역 여파기를 구현 할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Effect of Anchorage on Strength of Precast R/C Beam-Column Joints

  • Recently, there is a great demand for precast reinforced concrete (RC) construction methods on the purpose of simplicity in construction. Nishimatsu Construction Company has developed a construction method with precast reinforced concrete members in medium-rise building. In this construction method, how to joint precast members, especially the anchorage of the main bar of beam, is important problem. In this study, the structural performance of exterior joints with precast members was investigated. The parameters of the test specimens are anchorage type of the main bar of beam (U-shape anchorage or anchorage plate) and the ratio of the column axial force to the column strength. Specimens J-3 and J-4 used U-shape anchorage and the ratio of the column axial force of specimen J-4 was higher. On the other hand, specimens J-5 and J-6 used anchorage plate, and the anchorage lengths are 15d and 18d, respectively. Experimental results are summarized as follows; 1) For the joints with beam flexural failure mode, it was found that the maximum strength of specimen with anchorage plate is equal to or larger than that of specimen with conventional U-shaped anchorage if the anchorage length of more than 15d would be ensured, 2) Each specimen shows stable hysteretic curves and there were no notable effects on the hysteretic characteristics and the maximum strength caused by the anchorage method of beam main bar and the difference of column axial stress level.

실이에서 여자 음성 /ㅏ/, /ㅣ/, /ㅜ/의 포먼트 주파수 변화 (Formant frequency changes of female voice /a/, /i/, /u/ in real ear)

  • Formant frequencies depend on the position of tongue, the shape of lips, and larynx. In the auditory system, the external ear canal is an open-end resonator, which can modify the voice characteristics. This study investigates the effect of the real ear on formant frequencies. Fifteen subjects ranging from 22 to 30 years of age participated in the study. This study employed three corner vowels: the low central vowel /a/, the high front vowel /i/, and the high back vowel /u/. For this study, the voice of a well-educated undergraduate who majored in speech-language pathology, was recorded with a high performance condenser microphone placed in the upper pinna and in the ear canal. Paired t-test showed that there were significant difference in the formant frequencies of F1, F2, F3, and F4 between the free field and the real ear. For /a/, all formant frequencies decreased significantly in the real ear. For /i/, F2 increased and F3 and F4 decreased. For /u/, F1 and F2 increased, but F3 and F4 decreased. It seems that these voice modifications in the real ear contribute to interpreting voice quality and understanding speech, timbre, and individual characteristics, which are influenced by the shape of the outer ear and external ear canal in such a way that formant frequencies become centralized in the vowel space.

Economic and Non-economic Determinants of Environmental Sustainability in the Long Run: Evidence from G20 Economies

  • Purpose - This paper analyzes the economic and non-economic factors that contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions, based on G20 panel data. Design/methodology - We conduct a comparative analysis of advanced and developing economies during 1995-2016. To examine the impact, an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model was employed, incorporating additional explanatory variables such as internet use, renewable energy, and services trade. Findings - The empirical findings show the existence of an inverted U-shaped EKC phenomenon between GDP per capita and CO2 emissions in G20 economies, with the turning point at a per capita GDP level of US$ 38,340. Moreover, an inverted U-shape relation exists between internet use and CO2 emissions, with the turning point at a 44% internet use rate. The comparative analysis show that the inverted U-shape curve only exits in advanced economies, with turning points of US$ 42,356 per capita GDP and 27% internet use rate, respectively. Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Originality/value - Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Overall, the results suggest the role of internet use, renewable energy and services trade in sustainable development in G20 countries.
