A Study of the Effects of Vowels on the Production of English Labials /p, b, f, v/ by Korean Learners of English (영어학습자의 순음 /p, b, f, v/ 발성에 미치는 모음의 영향 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to find how English vowels /a, e, i, o, u/ affect the production of English labials /p, b, f, v/ by Korean learners of English. Sixty syllables were composed by five vowels and four labials in the syllable types CV, VC, and VCV. The nonsense syllables were produced three times by nine subjects. The major results show that (1) in inter-vocalic position, the subjects had higher scores in producing /v/ composed with /a, e, o/ and /u/, while subjects had lower scores in producing /p/ with /i/ and /o/, (2) in post-vocalic position, the subjects had higher scores in producing /v/ and /f/ with /a, e/, and /o/, while subjects had lower scores in producing /b/ with /e/ and /i/, and (3) in pre-vocalic position, the subjects had higher scores in producing /v/ with /e, o, u/ and /f/ with /u/, while subjects had lower scores in producing /b/ with /e/, /i/ and /u/. The results suggest that on the whole, Korean learners of English have much difficulty in producing /p/ with /i/ in inter-vocalic condition and /b/ with /i, /e/ in pre-vocalic position.

Effects of Mixing Ratio of Urea and Mlelamine on Formaldehyde Emission and Bonding Properties of Plywoods Manufactured with Urea-Melamine Formaldehyde Adhesives (요소-멜라민 공축합 수지의 요소와 멜라민 혼합비율이 합판의 포름알데히드 방출과 접착성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to measure formaldehyde emission and bonding strength of plywoods manufactured with urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives, which were made from three different mixing ratios of urea and melamine, and with four different formaldehyde/urea-melamine molar ratios of 1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.4. The results were as follows 1. Amount of formaldehyde emission was the lowest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.0. Amounts of formaldehyde emission of experimental manufactured adhesives were lower than that of commercial adhesive. 2. Bonding strength of dry specimen was the highest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Dry bonding strength of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was similar to commercial adhesive. 3. Bonding strength of wet specimen was the highest at the second method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Bonding strength of wet specimen used by the third method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was almost equal to commercial adhesive.

Micro-morphological Features of Liquid Urea-Formaldehyde Resins during Curing Process at Different Levels of Hardener and Curing Time Assessed by Transmission Electron Microscopy

  • This study used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the micro-morphological features of two formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio liquid urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins with three hardener levels as a function of the curing time. The micro-morphological features of the liquid UF resins were characterized after different curing times. As a result, the TEM examination revealed the presence of globular/nodular structures in both liquid UF resins, while spherical particles were only visible in the low F/U mole ratio resins. The high F/U mole ratio liquid UF resins also showed extensive particle coalescence after adding the hardener, along with the appearance of complex filamentous networks. When the resins were cured with a higher amount of hardener and longer curing time, the spherical particles disappeared. For the low mole UF resins, the particles tended to coalesce with a higher amount of hardener and longer curing time, although discrete spherical particles were still observed in some regions. This is the first report on the distinct features of the crystal structures in low F/U mole ratio UF resins cured with 5% hardener and after 0.5 h of curing time. In conclusion, the present results indicate that the crystal structures of low F/U mole ratio UF resins are formed during the curing process.

  • Das Ziel dieses Aufsatzes liegt darin, $da\ss$ wir eine Unterlage $f\"{u}r$ die Erarbeitung des kunftigen vergleichenden deutsch-koreanischen Verbvalenzlexikons bereitstellen, indem wir zweisprachige Valenz-lexika vergleichen, bei denen die Muttersprache der Lemenden als Ausgangssprache und die deutsche Sparche als Zielsprache fungieren, und ein neues Valenzmodell mit dem Verb 'kaufen 팔다' aufzeigen. Als Ergebnis dieser Arbeit $k\"{o}nnen$ wir feststellen, $da\ss$ die Entwicklung der kontrastiven Valenzlexikographie vom register-ahnlichen Lexikon hin zum benutzerfreundlichen $W\"{o}rterbuch$ $verl\"{a}uft$. Und ferner ist die Tendenz ansteigend, zweisprachige Versionen aus den einsprachigen $W\"{o}rterb\"{u}chern$ des Deutschen zu entwickeln, denn die kontrastiven $W\"{o}rterb\"{u}cher$ kommen den praktischen $Bed\"{u}rfnissen$ des Fremdsprachenunterrichts $f\"{u}r\;Anf\"{a}nger$ mehr entgegen als die einsprachigen. Die Valenzlexika sollten $prim\"{a}r$ dem Deutsch Lernenden helfen, seinen Wortschatz zu erweitern und korrekte $S\"{a}tze$ zu bilden, sollten jedoch nicht unmittelbares Selbststudienmaterial, sondern Nachschlagewerke sein. Die neuere Entwicklung in der Valenzlexikographie $f\"{u}hrt$ hin zum didaktisch orientierten $W\"{o}rterbuch$, in dem die $Valenzeintr\"{a}ge$ neben anderen syntaktischen und semantischen Informationen stehen. $F\"{u}r$ Studenten im Grundstudium sind $W\"{o}rterb\"{u}cher$ in der Fremdsprache zu schwierig. Bei der zweisprachigen Version erleichtern die $Valenzeintr\"{a}ge$ In der Muttersprache den Studierenden den Umgang mit dem $Lernw\"{o}rterbuch$. In Zukunft $k\"{o}nnen\;Valenzw\"{o}rterb\"{u}cher$ als wichtige Hilfsmittel im Fremd­sprachenunterricht noch an Bedeutung gewinnen. Ein $Valenzw\"{o}rterbuch$ ist vor allem ein $Produktionsw\"{o}rterbuch,\;denn\;es\;enth\"{a}lt$ syntaktisch-semantische Informationen und $Beispiels\"{a}tze$, die bei der Produktion korrekter Strukturen helfen. Das $Valenzw\"{o}rterbuch$ soll ein Nachschlagewerk, ein $Lernw\"{o}rter-buch$ zur weiteren Erforschung der syntaktish-semantischen Eigenschaften der deutschen Verben sein. Diese Untersuchung $\"{u}ber$ zweisprachige Verbvalenzlexika $k\"{o}nnte\;zur\;k\"{u}nfigen$ Erarbeitung des deutsch-koreanischen kontrastiven Verbvalenzlexikons beitragen.

Cognitive abilities and speakers' adaptation of a new acoustic form: A case of a /o/-raising in Seoul Korean

  • The vowel /o/ in Seoul Korean has been undergoing a sound change by altering the acoustic weighting of F2 and F1. Studies documented that this on-going change redefined the nature of a /o/-/u/ contrast as F2 differences rather than as F1 differences. The current study examined two cognitive factors namely executive function capacity (EF) and autistic traits, in terms of their roles in explaining who in speech community would adapt new acoustic forms of the target vowels, and who would retain the old forms. The participants, 55 college students speaking Seoul Korean, produced /o/ and /u/ vowels in isolated words; and completed three EF tasks (Digit N-Back, Stroop, and Trail-Making Task), and an Autism screening questionnaire. The relationships between speakers' cognitive task scores and their utilizations of F1 and F2 were analyzed using a series of correlation tests. Results yielded a meaningful relationship in participants' EF scores interacting with gender. Among the females, speakers with higher EF scores were better at retaining F1, which is a less informative cue for females since they utilized F2 more than they did F1 in realizing /o/ and /u/. In contrast, better EF control among male speakers was associated with more use of the new cue (F2) where males still utilized F1 as much as F2 in the production of /o/ and /u/ vowels. Taken together, individual differences in acoustic realization can be explained by individuals' cognitive abilities, and their progress in the sound change further predicts that cognitive ability influences the utilization of acoustic information which is non-primary to the speaker.

  • We study the following nonlinear problem $-div(w(x){\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{p(x)-2}{\nabla}u)+{\mid}u{\mid}^{p(x)-2}u={\lambda}f(x,u)$ in ${\Omega}$ which is subject to Neumann boundary condition. Under suitable conditions on w and f, we give the existence of a positive infimum eigenvalue for the p(x)-Laplacian Neumann problem.
