  • In this paper, we described the aeroelastic full-bridge model tests that were conducted to investigate the effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures for thecable-stayed bridge during construction to ensure aerodynamic stability in the event of a typhoon or similar disasters. The effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures was investigated through various configurations on two cable-stayed bridges with a main span of 475 m and 230 m, respectively. To investigate the bridge's aerodynamic behaviour and dynamic wind force during construction, the deflections at the end of the cantilever, the accelerations atthe top of the pylon and the moments at the lower part of the pylon were measured. As the result, the system with two sets of vertical cables per cantilever seemed to be the overall most effective solution, but the system with single vertical cable may also work. The combined system using the caisson support and vertical cables and the system with two sets of inclined cables per cantilever on the same anchor block may also be a solution. The inclined cables from the caisson to the girder were effective for some early stages of erecting the deck.

  • A forecast technique using GMS-4(Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) infrared images and its $T_{BB}$ (Brightness Temperature) data to determine the tropical cyclone center and to analyze the tropical cyclone intensity has been developed. First, the determination of typhoon center using $T_{BB}$ distribution pattern is practiced by understanding a special feature of central cloud pattern and cloud band which is analyzed with the method of pseudo coloring. Then, to forecast the intensity of tropical cyclone, a relationship between the central pressure (or maximum wind speed) of tropical cyclone and $T_{BB}$ measured by GMS near the tropical cyclone center was investigated. The results showed a correlation with a high lag relationship between central pressures and $T_{BB}$. The mean Tee in the ring of 200~300km apart from the tropical cyclone center showed the best correlation to central pressure of the tropical cyclone after 24hour. From this relationship, a regression equation to forecast the central pressure (or maximum wind speed) was derived.

  • The distribution properties of airborne chlorides at the coasts of Jeju island were identified in this study. For this, Jeju island was divided into four regions-east, west, south, and north, and the airborne chlorides were investigated in those regions. And the regional and seasonal distribution properties of airborne chlorides were analyzed. Jeju island, which has a subtropical climate and is surrounded by ocean, has a great regional variation in the distribution properties of airborne chlorides, with a difference of more than 6 times between the eastern region, the highest region, and the southern region, the lowest region. In terms of seasonal properties, the airborne chlorides in eastern and western region were high in summer and fall, and in summer mainly due to typhoon. The airborne chlorides in northern region were high in winter due to the northwest wind, and the that of southern region were high in summer. Meanwhile, the airborne chlorides of Jeju island tends to be high compared to the eastern, western, and southern coasts of South Korea.

  • In modern society, damage caused by strong winds such as typhoons is expected to increase due to urbanization and global warming. In order to test the reinforcement performance of the newly developed window protection device, two-point force test and uniformly distributed load test were carried out on non-reinforced plate glass. It reinforcement performance of the window protection device was evaluated based on the flexural performance improvement. The analytical performance of the window protection device was evaluated by analysis using differential equations of elastic loading method and deflection curve and Midas-Gen. First, the analytical window protection device was evaluated by formulae derived using differential equations of elastic loading and deflection curve. The validity of the derived formulae investigated by comparing the maximum deflection of the central part of the plate with the experimental value and the theoretical value at maximum load. Then the results were compared with those by finite element FE method using Midas-Gen. Under the experimental conditions, with the window protection device, stress reduction effect up to 40% and deflection reduction up to 71.4% under the same load were obtained. It was also found that it is advantageous to perform the FE analysis using the plate element when the performance is evaluated because the error of FE analysis result using plate elements is far less than that using beam elements.

  • In general, coastal damage is mostly occurred by the action of complex factors, like severe water waves. If the maximum storm surge height combines with high tide, severe water waves will overflow coastal structures. Consequently, it can be the cause of lost lives and severe property damage. In this study, using the numerical model, the storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics at the coast in front of Noksan industrial complex, Korea. Moreover, the shallow water wave is estimated by applying wind field, design water level considering storm surge height for typhoon Maemi to SWAN model. Under the condition of shallow water wave, obtained by the SWAN model, the wave overtopping rate for the dike in front of Noksan industrial complex is calculated a hydraulic model test. Finally, based on the calculated wave-overtopping rate, the inundation regime for Noksan industrial complex was predicted. And, numerically predicted inundation regimes and depths are compared with results in a field survey, and the results agree fairly well. Therefore, the inundation modelthis study is a useful tool for predicting inundation regime, due to the coastal flood of severe water wave.

  • Withstanding the continuous treat from the typhoon and nasty weather from ocean, the development of the real time monitoring buoy such as ocean wave related monitoring buoy system becomes essential. In this research, the development of the ocean wave monitoring buoy system had been done domestically. The development including the data real-time monitoring (wind, temperature and pressure) added in the buoy, buoy mooring and real-time data communication system. The developed wave monitoring buoy system (drift type, wave direction and wave height type) is expected to meet the demands.

  • Overhead transmission lines are mainly crossing mountainous area. They are easily affected in weathers like typhoon, strong wind, lightning, heavy rain, or heavy snow. Sometimes these weathers cause transmission line faults. A lightning flashover is most often fault. Nowadays lightning density in KOREA is growing high and lightning flashovers occur more often. A lightning flashover on transmission line is mostly cleared by momentary operation of a circuit breaker, so power failure happens rarely. However, when both circuits trip simultaneously due to the lightning flashovers on double circuit transmission line, short time power failure and voltage drop happen. KEPCO has used transmission line arresters to avoid double circuit simultaneous trip out since 2003. And transmission line arresters cannot be installed with KEPCO's present metal fittings, so various fittings have been used for each transmission line arrester manufacturer. This paper introduces development and standardization of arc-horn and metal fittings for transmission line arrester which can be used for both existing lines and new lines in KEPCO.

  • To reduce the damage from the coastal disaster such as typhoon and tsunami, a possible option is the eco-friendly approach to minimize the destruction of ecological system. One of feasible idea is the forest for damage prevention artificially arranged along the beach. To understand a precise physics on the flow before and after the forest, we use a CFD method. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model has been constructed based on tree cases in a real forest located at Byin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungnam. The CFD computation using a commercial code COMSOL multiphysics is performed for the distribution of real spatial coordinate of each tree. Through this investigation, the CFD techniques are shown to be applied to the research of forest composition plan. The physics in the regime from laminar to turbulent flow is qualitatively explained, and the obtained data are compared one another quantitatively.

  • The road luminaires have been treated as subsidiary electric apparatuses in the road although they are indispensable facilities which people use the road safely. Because of this misunderstanding, there are not many researches on luminaire supports against the wind loads. Therefore, a typhoon has overturned or damaged many luminaire supports without having sufficient structural safeties. The purpose of this study is to review the current design criteria and to suggest the improvement of design methods based on the structural safety and compatible with the site conditions of luminaire supports. The stress concentration around the inspection hole, which causes the collapse of luminaire supports, is analyzed and stress reduction method is suggested with the improved design methods.

  • This study was aimed at estimation of gas-particle partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ambient air. The samples were collected at urban site in Japan from March 2002 to January 2003. The concentration of total PCBs (from 4 CB to 10 CB) and TEQ (Toxic equivalent) ranged from 62 to $247\;pg/m^3$ and from 2 to $14\;fgTEQ/m^3 $, respectively. The average contribution $(\%)$ of gas phase to total PCBs concentration was above $80\%$, which suggests that in the atmosphere PCBs predominantly existed in the gas phase. The weak correlations between total PCBs concentration and temperature was found. However this result was due to a typhoon during summer and raining during sampling period. The gas-particle partition coefficient (Kp) was obtained as a function of temperature. The partition ratio of gaseous and particulate phase PCBs can be estimated for an arbitrary temperature. The plot of gas/particle partition coefficient (log Kp) vs. sub-cooled liquid vapor pressure $(log\;P_L)$ had reasonable correlations for individual samples but the slope varied among the samples (coefficients of determination for log Kp versus log $P_L$ plot were> 0.76 $(p<0.0001)$, except for 3 samples). As a result, the variations in the slope among the sampling period may be due to change of temperature, raining during sampling period and wind in this study.
