The South China Sea (SCS) is a typical marginal sea characterized with the deep basin, shelf break, shallow shelf, many straits, and complex bathymetry. This study investigated the tidal characteristics and propagation, and reproduced typhoon-induced storm surge in this region using the regional real-time tide-surge model, which was based on the unstructured grid, resolving in detail the region of interest and forced by tide at the open boundary and by wind and air pressure at the surface. Typhoon Haiyan, which occurred in 2013 and caused great damage in the Philippines, was chosen as a case study to simulate typhoon's impact. Amplitudes and phases of four major constituents were reproduced reasonably in general, and the tidal distributions of four constituents were similar to the previous studies. The modelled tide seemed to be within the acceptable levels, considering it was difficult to reproduce the tide in this region based on the previous studies. The free oscillation experiment results described well the feature of tide that the diurnal tide is prevailing in the SCS. The tidal residual current and total energy dissipation were discussed to understand the tidal and sedimentary environments. The storm-surge caused by typhoon Haiyan was reasonably simulated using this modeling system. This study established the regional real-time barotropic tide/water level prediction system for the South China Sea including the seas around the Philippines through the validation of the model and the understanding of tidal characteristics.

This study intends to analyze the accessibility to the evacuation shelters according to pedestrian characteristics for Shinpo-district and Haewoon district, Masan Happo-gu, Changwon, designated as Disaster Risk Districts(Typhoon and Storm Surge Risk Zones) due to the typhoon and surge disasters of the past such as Typhoon RUSA or MAEMI. Evacuation speed was analyzed by dividing the types of evacuees into children, general adults, and the aged people by considering physical conditions. In the case of Haewoon district, currently designated evacuation shelters appeared to be appropriate. But in the case of Sinpo district, over 50% of designated Disaster Risk Districts appeared to be evacuation-vulnerable zones in the case of the aged. Therefore, three additional shelters were designated to complement these problems. The results reveal that the problems about the evacuation-vulnerable zones in the case of the existing designated shelters, appeared to be improved. It is expected that the results, obtained in this study will be utilized to establish the complementary measures to analyze the evacuation risk and solve the problems.

Typhoon induced surge simulations are done to make an establishment of coastal disaster prevention plan. To apply efficient run-up and overtopping on vertical harbor docks, in which prevailing wet-dry scheme cannot be satisfied due to infinite steepness, an imaginary internal barrier concept introduced and analyzed. Before real application on the Mokpo harbor area, feasibility tests are done on an idealized simple geometry and as a result it is found that the moderate width of the barrier might be 1 m. The threshold value of the minimum wet depth $H_{min}$ for land area, which behaves sensitive role in inundation area and depth, depends on grid size. However it is revealed that 0.01 m is adequate value in this fine finite element with 10 m spacing. A hypothetical typhoon of 100 years return period in central pressure and maximum velocity is generated based on historical tracks. Simulation of possible inundation on Mokpo area is performed with asymmetrical vortex of hypothetical typhoon and wave coupling. Model results show general agreement in pattern compared to other's prediction, however possibility of inundation enlargement is expected in harbor area.

This research mainly focuses on examining the applicability of the deterministic model SLOSH (Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes) on Seas covering South Korea. Also, a simple bathtub approach which estimates coastal inundation area is validated as a first step of estimating effects of sea-level rise on the coastal cities of South Korea according to climate change. Firstly, the typhoon-induced surges are obtained from the model SLOSH by adopting historical typhoons MAEMI (0314) and BOLAVEN (1215). The results are compared to observational, typhoon-induced surge heights at several tidal stations. The coastal inundation area is estimated by comparing the maximum envelop of waves (MEOW) and the elevation of coastal land. It reproduces well the inundation area. It can be seen that this research gained applicability for estimating further potential coastal inundation with climate changes.

EST has been applied to the East Coast to estimate extreme sea levels. Surge heights induced by 51 typhoons which have occurred last 60 years were calculated by ADCIRC model. The training set which is consist of surge heights by both typhoon and monsoon was constructed. The maximum surge height of the year excluding the one by typhoon is considered to be the surge height by monsoon. High/low tide conditions and spring/neap tide conditions were considered for constructing input vectors of typhoon and monsoon, respectively. The annual tide is also considered in response vectors for each case. The result is in accord with Jeong et al. (2008), which implies validity of the present study.
Various typhoon data near Yongil Bay, Korea from 1961 to 1985 were collected with some critria and analyzed with the help of the computer. Introducing the pressure profile models and predicting the typhoon wind and wave fields, the 100-year design wave parameters were calculated. Additionally, the wave data at the southeast coast of Korea were statistically analyzed. The deep water wave climate of this bay indicated that Typhoon Brenda, 1985 had wave characteristics of 100-year return period, Typhoon model and storm surge model studies were made for this typhoon. These, including other design parameters, were introduced into the calculation of total design water depth.

An efficient typhoon wave-generating model is applied to northeast Asia sea zone presented that can be used by civil defense agencies for real-time prediction and fast warnings on typhoon-generated wind wave and storm surge. Instead of using commercialized wave models such as WAM, SWAN, the wind waves are simulated by using a new concept of wavelength modulation to enhance broader application of the hyperbolic wave model of the mild-slope equation type. The results simulated along the Korean coasts during Typhoon Nabi (2005) showed reasonable agreement with the recorded wind waves.

This study performs the investigation of a long-term variation of annual maximum surge heights(AMSH) and main characteristics of high surge events, and the statistical evaluation of the AMSH using sea level data at Yeosu and Tongyeong tidal stations over more than 30 years. It is found that the long-term uptrends based on the linear regression in the AMSH are 34.5 cm/34 yr at Yeosu and 33.6 cm/31 yr at Tongyeong, which are relatively much higher than those at Sokcho and Mukho in the Eastern Coast. 71% and 68% of the AMSH occur during typhoon's event in Yeosu and Tongyeong tidal stations, respectively, and the highest surge records are mostly produced by the typhoon. The generalized extreme value distribution taking into account of the time variable is applied to detect time trend in annual maximum surge heights. In addition, Gumbel distribution is checked to find which one is best fitted to the data using likelihood ratio test. The return level and its 90% confidence interval are obtained for the statistical prediction of the future trend. The prevention of the growing storm surge damage by the intensified typhoon requires the steady analysis and prediction of the surge events associated with the climate change.

Typhoons occur intensively between July and October, and the sea level is the highest during this time. In particular, the mean sea level in summer in Korea is higher than the annual mean sea level about 14.5cm in the west coast, 9.0 to 14.5cm in the south coast, and about 9.0 cm in the east coast. When the rising the sea level and a large typhoon overlap in summer, it can cause surges and flooding in low-lying coastal areas. Therefore, accurate calculation of the surge height is essential when designing coastal structures and assessing stability in order to reduce coastal hazards on the lowlands. In this study, the typhoon surge heights considering the summer mean sea level rise (SH_m) was calculated, and the validity of the analysis of abnormal phenomena was reviewed by comparing it with the existing surge height considering the annual mean sea level (SH_a). As a result of the re-analyzed study of typhoon surge heights for BOLAVEN (SANBA), which influenced in August and September during the summer sea level rise periods, yielded the differences of surge heights (cm) between SH_a and SH_m 7.8~24.5 (23.6~34.5) for the directly affected zone of south-west (south-east) coasts, while for the indirect southeast (south-west) coasts showed -1.0~0.0 (8.3~12.2), respectively. Whilst the differences between SH_a and SH_m of typhoons CHABA (KONG-REY) occurred in October showed remarkably lessened values as 5.2~ 14.2 (19.8~21.6) for the directly affected south-east coasts and 3.2~6.3 (-3.2~3.7) for the indirectly influenced west coast, respectively. The results show the SH_a does not take into account the increased summer mean sea level, so it is evaluated that it is overestimated compared to the surge height that occurs during an actual typhoon. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to re-discuss the feasibility of the surge height standard design based on the existing annual mean sea level, along with the accurate establishment of the concept of surge height.

Extreme wind speeds at four sites including Mokpo, Gunsan, Incheon and Jeju near the Western Coast have been estimated with a tool of Monte Carlo simulation and typhoon data. Results of sensitivity analysis show that closeness between distance to the eye and the radius to maximum wind is most sensitive. While location angle and pressure deficit are sensitive too, but translation velocity is not. A standard typhoon, which results in extreme wind speeds having various return period, can be constructed by combination of parameter informations of each site. Then, with a numerical modelling of the typhoon, extreme surge heights having the same return period can also be obtained. To be added, by analysing the data which only including those based on navigable semicircle, it is possible to produce a standard typhoon which could result in setting-down of sea level.
