  • Effects of insulation after exposure of the extremities on the temperature regulation in clothed men were studied. Experiment was carried out with six males in a climatic chamber fixed at $10^{\circ}C$, $55\%$ R.H. treated with Type A (face only was exposed) and Type B (face and half of the extremities were exposed). Mean skin temperature fell greater in Type B due to intense vasoconstriction than in Type A. Rectal temperature rose a little in Type B and resumed in Type A without any significant differences in metabolism between two types of clothing. These findings suggest that Type B is more effective in physiological defense to the cold stimuli than Type A at least at $10^{\circ}C$.

  • Six different sequences types(A through E and H) and a subtype(Bl) of the small subunit ribosomal RNA(SSUrRNA) gene were found in bovine Theileria isolates from different areas of Korea and Japan. The sequences were aligned and three hypervariable regions were observed in the nucleotide position ranges 212~231, 261~270 and 632~690. Five of the Theileria isolates yielded sequence type A; these were the field isolates KCB, KCN, and KCJ, and the laboratory stock KLS, all from Korea, and a single isolate from Japan (JHS). This sequence type is identical to the SSUrRNA gene sequence listed for Theileria buffeli (GenBank Accession No. Z15106) from Marula, Kenya. The Korean field isolate KKB yielded only a single sequence type (B), but multiple sequence types were found in some isolates. For example, KCB and JHS isolates yielded both types A and B ; isolate KKW showed types B and H; isolate KCN showed types A, C, and D ; and isolate KCJ showed types A, B, E, and a subtype B1. Finding of the multiple sequences SSUrRNA gene sequences suggests that bovine Theileria isolates from both Korea and Japan may consist of mixed populations.

  • The influence of respiration on photosythetic electron transport were investigated in the Wid type and psaB mutants from Syneehocystis sp. PCC6803. The amount of glucose uptake in the wild type was proportional to the glucose concentration added in wild type and less than that of psaB mutants in the dark. It was suggested that psaB mutants more depend on the glucose than the wild type. It was investigated how the activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase(IDH) and glucose-6-phos-phate dehydrogenase(G6PDH) were changed. The activities of IDH were very low. While, the ac-tivities of G6PDH were much higher than that of IDH. These results agree to the reports that ex-ogenous glucose was dismilated aerobically via Oxidative Pentose Phosphate Pathway in heterotrophic cyanobacteria. PsaB mutants showed high G6PDH activity in the presence of glucose as well as in the dark and high respiratory activities especially in the dark. It was also investigated how photosynthetic electron transport activities were changed. PsaB mutants showed higher photosynthetic electron tranasport activities than wild type in the presence of glucose as well as in the dark. In the results, it was proposed that photosynthetic electron transport between PS I and PS U was complemented by respiratory electron transport through the NADPH generated by Dxidative Pentose Phophate Pathway in psaB mutant from Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. Key words: Photosynthetic electron transport, Respiration, Synechoystis sp. PCC6803, psaB mutant, Glucose uptake, IDH, G6PDH, Respiratory electron transport activity.

  • Dorsal and ventral epithelium of leech, Whitemenia edentula, were observed, using both light and electron-microscope. Results are as follows. Epithelia are composed of simple columnar or irregularly-shaped epithelium, the transveral folds were seen in the cross-sectioned dorsal and ventral epithelia, but only longitudinal folds(depth $500{\mu}m$, width $350{\mu}m$) were discovered in the ventral epithelium. As to muscular tissue under the dorsal epithelium of Whitemenia edentula, that of longitudinal muscle layer is thicker and more developed than that of circular muscle layer. Seven gland cells (type-A, B, C, D, E, F and H cells) and one pigment cell (type-G cell) were discovered in the whitemenia edentula. Those were identified as three kinds of the neutral mucopolysaccharide granoles (type-A, B and F cells), two kinds of acidic mucopolysaccharide granules (type-C and D cells), and two kinds of non-reactive granules respectively (type-E and F cells). The glanules of the type-A and type-B gland cells ae electronly high-dense, and surrounded by the muscular tissue. As to the distribution of gland cells, the type-A, type-B, type-C, type-D, type-I and type-H gland cells were discovered only between the connective tissue and the circular muscle layer, while type-F gland cells were discovered only between tile circular muscle layer and the longitudinal muscle layer.

  • In this study, to improve bending strength performance of Korean white pine, we made the curved composite glulam that was reinforced with glass fiber materials and larch lamina. Five types of Korean white pine curved glulams were made depending on whether they had been reinforced or not and how they had been reinforced. Type-A, reference specimen, was produced only with Korean white pine lamina, and Type-B was with larch lamina in the same thickness. Type-C was made by inserting a glass fiber cloth of textile shape between the each layer. Type-D was reinforced with two glass fiber cloths, which were placed inside and outside of the outermost lamina. Type-E was reinforced with GFRP sheet in the same way as Type-D. As a result of this bending strength test, the modulus of rupture (MOR) of Type-B, Type-C and Type-E were increased by 29%, 6%, and 48% in comparison with Type-A. However, MOR of Type-D was decreased by 2% in comparison with Type-A. In the failure modes, Type-A, Type-B and Type-C were totally fractured at the maximum load. However, load values of Type-D and Type-E decreased slowly because of reinforcement of fracture suppression, and the GFRP sheet (Type-E) had better reinforcing effect on compressive stress and tensile stress than the glass fiber cloth (Type-D).

  • Two Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) types, type 1 and type 2, maintain the same allelic specificity at four genomic loci encoding the EBNA2, -3A, -3B, and -3C proteins. We have previously described 16 EBV-transformed B-lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from Korean cancer patients, and the EBNA2 types of the EBV isolates therein. In this study, the allelic types of the EBNA2, -3A, -3B, and -3C genes of these EBV isolates were determined. We report the identification of two distinct types of naturally occurring intertypic recombinants, one with genotype EBNA2 type1/EBN3A, -3B, -3C type 2 and the other with genotype EBNA2, -3A type 1/EBNA3B, -3C type 2. The existence of these intertypic recombinants indicates that various intertypic EBV strains may be circulating in the human population, in addition to typical EBV-1 and EBV-2 strains.

  • A total 943 accession of soybeans (G. max) and 50 wild soybeans (G. soja) were examined for leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) isozyme variation by 5% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(PAGE) and isoelectric focusing(IEF) of pH 4~6.5. The Lap1*b by PAGE was the most common phenotype in both G. max and G. soja. The frequency of Lap1*b allele was observed to be higher in G. max(1.00) than in G. soja(0.96) of Korea. This result shows that G. max is fixed for Lapl*b allele at the Lap1 locus. LAP isozyme band type I and II were found using IEF of pH 4~6.5 in G. max and G. soja of Korea. Type I was observed from 92.8% in G. max and 92.0% in G. soja, and type II was discovered in 7.2% G. max and 8.0% G. soja. This result suggested the possibility to be found more various band types.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for some basic data useful to production of the apparels fit and measured well for the Chinese men. For this purpose, 389 men aged between 20 and 49 and living in Beijing and Shanghai, China were sampled to be measured for their constitutions. Then, their constitutions were classified and thereupon, according to the Men's Wear Specifications (GB/T 1335.1-1997), National Standards of People's Republic of China. The collected data were statistically processed using SAS 6.12 for technical statistical analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, group-wise analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. As a result of the factor analysis aiming to determine Chinese men's constitutional components, five components could be identified: constitutional obesity, lateral body size, longitudinal body size, shoulder and back width, and shoulder drooping. 2. As a result of classifying Chinese men's constitutions according to drop measurements, four types could be identified. Y type had the lowest obesity and the highest longitudinal body size. A type had a lower obesity and had an average longitudinal body size. B Type had the second highest obesity, the smallest longitudinal body size and shoulders/back width. C Type had the highest obesity, upper body length and shoulders/back width. 3. In terms of distribution, 'B' type (39.10%) of the sample, followed by 'A' type (29.26%), 'C' type (19.95%) and 'Y' type (11.70%). In all, the results of this study suggests that 'B' type represents the Chinese men in contrast with GB specifying that 'A' type represents the Chinese men. On the other hand, Beijing region was dominated most by 'B' type (37.06%), followed by 'A' type (28.82%), 'C' type (22.35%) and 'Y' type (11.76%), while Shanghai region was dominated most by 'B' type (41.13%), followed by 'A' type (31.21%), 'C' type (19.15%) and 'Y' type (8.51%).

  • Recently, geofiber(polyester) reinforced soil was added on soil-seed mixture spray to control erosion and to improve vegetation growth on rocky slope sites. This research was conducted to compare vegetation effects and soil hardness on three types of soil-seed mixture spray on stone gabion river bank [A type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system), B type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand without geofiber, C type : soil-seed mixture spray]. Evaluation were made concerning vegetation coverage, soil hardness and moisture content. The results of this study showed that A type system was effective for the growth of vegetation and soil hardness when compareed to B type and C type. A type and B type showed higher covering rate than C type on stone gabion river bank, and especially A type showed the highest covering rate. Soil hardness and water content were high on A type vegetation system compared to B type and C type. We noted that high soil hardness and high moisture content with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system) were effective both to control erosion from water current impact and to be high coverage and species of vegetation on stone gabion river bank.

  • This research explores the potential of methyl methacrylate(MMA) as a material for road repair applications. It specifically examines two MMA formulations, referred to as type A and type B, in relation to their performance on concrete substrates. The evaluation criteria included drying time, tensile bond strength, and resistance to alkali. The condition of the substrate surface was varied across three curing environments: constant temperature and humidity(R), immersion in water(W), and immersion in water with chloride ions(N). The findings indicate that type B MMA exhibits a quicker drying time and superior resistance to alkali compared to type A. While type A demonstrated greater tensile bond strength, it failed to maintain adhesion with the concrete base. Based on the parameters tested in this study, type B MMA emerges as the more favorable option for road repair contexts. Nonetheless, the study underscores the necessity for additional testing on asphalt substrates to fully assess the material's durability and applicability for long-term road maintenance.
