It is important to identify informative variables in high dimensional data analysis; however, it becomes a challenging task when covariates are contaminated by measurement error due to the bias induced by measurement error. In this article, we present a two-step approach for variable selection in the presence of measurement error. In the first step, we directly select important variables from the contaminated covariates as if there is no measurement error. We then apply, in the following step, orthogonal regression to obtain the unbiased estimates of regression coefficients identified in the previous step. In addition, we propose a modification of the two-step approach to further enhance the variable selection performance. Various simulation studies demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method.
Since the conventional direct approaches are hard to be applied for damage diagnosis of complex large-scale structures, a two-step approach for diagnosing the joint damage of framed structures is presented in this paper by using artificial neural networks. The first step is to judge the damaged areas of a structure, which is divided into several sub-areas, using probabilistic neural networks with natural Frequencies Shift Ratio inputs. The next step is to diagnose the exact damage locations and extents by using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network with the second Element End Strain Mode of the damaged sub-area input. The results of numerical simulation show that the proposed approach could diagnose the joint damage of framed structures induced by earthquake action effectively and has reliable anti-jamming abilities.

Multi-camera systems which integrate two or more low-cost digital cameras are adopted to reach higher ground coverage and improve the base-height ratio in low altitude remote sensing. To guarantee accurate multi-camera integration, the geometric relationship among cameras must be determined through platform calibration techniques. This paper proposed a combined two-step platform calibration method. In the first step, the static platform calibration was conducted based on the stable relative orientation constraint and convergent conditions among cameras in static environments. In the second step, a dynamic platform self-calibration approach was proposed based on not only tie points but also straight lines in order to correct the small change of the relative relationship among cameras during dynamic flight. Experiments based on the proposed two-step platform calibration method were carried out with terrestrial and aerial images from a multi-camera system combined with four consumer-grade digital cameras onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle. The experimental results have shown that the proposed platform calibration approach is able to compensate the varied relative relationship during flight, acquiring the mosaicing accuracy of virtual images smaller than 0.5pixel. The proposed approach can be extended for calibrating other low-cost multi-camera system without rigorously mechanical structure.
In this paper, we propose an approach to identify the driving environment for intelligent highway vehicles by means of image processing and computer vision techniques. The proposed approach mainly consists of two consecutive computational steps. The first step is the lane marking detection, which is used to identify the location of the host vehicle and road geometry. In this step, related standard image processing techniques are adapted for lane-related information. In the second step, by using the output from the first step, a four-stage algorithm for vehicle detection is proposed to provide information on the relative position and speed between the host vehicle and each preceding vehicle. The proposed approach has been validated in several real-world scenarios. Herein, experimental results indicate low false alarm and low false dismissal and have demonstrated the robustness of the proposed detection approach.
We present a two step approach for estimating the motionand sturcture parameters from region orrespondences in two frames. Given four or more region corresondences on the same planar surface, the motion and planar orientation parameters are first linearly estimated based on second-order approximation of the displacement field of the image plane. Then, using this linear estimate as an initial guess, a nonlinear estimate is obtained by iteratively minimizing an objective function using the exact experession of the displacement field. The objective function involves the centroids of corresponding regions and relationships among low-order moments. Through simulations, we show that the two-step region-based approach gives robust estimates. The performance of nonlinear region-based estimation is compared with that of linear region-based and point-based methods. Experimental results for two image pairs, on esynthetic and one real, ar epresented to show the practical applicability of our approach.
In general, there are three kinds of methods in analyzing dynamic robust design experiment: loss model approach, response function approach, and response model approach. In this talk, we review the three modeling approaches in terms of several criteria in comparison. This talk also generalizes the response model approach based on a generalized linear model. We develop a generalized two-step optimization procedure to substantially reduce the process variance by dampening the effect of both explicit and hidden noise variables. The proposed method provides more reliable results through iterative modeling of the residuals from the fitted response model. The method is compared with three existing approaches in practical examples.
GPS is widely used for outdoor positioning in many applications. But it is not suitable for positioning in an obstacle environment such as urban area, tunnels and so on, due to variable signal level. So new technology of the positioning is required to provide the consistent error level regardless of any changes in any environment. Abrupt changes of GPS signal can be detected by various fault detection and isolation methods. Conventional FDI (Fault Detection and Isolation) methods are categorized into two approaches. One approach is the snapshot method that uses measurements only at present step. The other approach is the filtering method that uses measurements stacked from previous step to present step. The FDI result of the snapshot method can be considered reliable independently with previous results and the FDI result of the filtering method is more reliable and detection time is a little longer. Therefore combining approach of two methods is proposed for increasing FDI performance in this paper. Three approaches that are the snapshot method, the filtering method and the combining method are compared to show the probability of correct FDI in simulations. The combining approach presents best result of FDI among them and shows the consistent accuracy irrespective of any changes in outdoor environment.

Detecting the damage of indeterminate trusses is of major importance in the literature. This paper proposes a quick approach in this regard, utilizing a precise mathematical approach based on Finite Element Method. Different to a general two-step method defined in the literature essentially based on optimization approach, this method consists of three steps including Damage-Suspected Element Identification step, Imminent Damaged Element Identification step, and finally, Damage Severity Detection step and does not need any optimizing algorithm. The first step focuses on the identification of damage-suspected elements using an index based on modal residual force vector. In the second step, imminent damage elements are identified among the damage-suspected elements detected in the previous step using a specific technique. Ultimately, in the third step, a novel relation is derived to calculate the damage severity of each imminent damaged element. To show the efficiency and quick function of the proposed method, three examples including a 25-bar planar truss, a 31-bar planar truss, and a 52-bar space truss are studied; results of which indicate that the method is innovatively capable of suitably detecting, for indeterminate trusses, not only damaged elements but also their individual damage severity by carrying out solely one analysis.
Two-step neural network is designed for determining electrical discharge machining parameters in low erosion. The first neural network, which is used as a classification network, checks whether the current conditions are appropriate to electrical discharge machining in low tool erosion. If the conditions are appropriate to EDM in low erosion, suitable EDM parameters are generated by the second neural network. Theoretically known EDM conditions are produced and also utilized for training the second neural network. The trained neural network is tested how well suitable EDM machining conditions are generated under unknown machining situations Experimental result shows that the proposed two-step neural network approach could be effectively used for determining EDM parameters in low tool erosion. The results also have a practical contribution to EDM area in that it could be applied for maintaining low tool wear as well as obtaining maximum machining rates simultaneously.
