In nuclear thermal-hydraulic system codes, most correlations used for vertical pipes, under downward two-phase flow, have been developed considering small pipes or pool systems. This suggests that there could be uncertainties in applying the correlations to accident scenarios involving large vertical pipes owing to the difference in the characteristics of two-phase flows, or flow conditions, between large and small pipes. In this study, we modified the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety KINS Standard (MARS-KS) code using correlations, such as the drift-flux model and two-phase multiplier, developed in a plant-scale air-inflow experiment conducted for a pipe of diameter 600 mm under downward two-phase flow. The results were then analyzed and compared with those based on previous correlations developed for small pipes and pool conditions. The modified code indicated a good estimation performance in two plant-scale experiments with large pipes. For the siphon-breaking experiment, the maximum errors in water flow for modified and original codes were 2.2% and 30.3%, respectively. For the air-inflow accident experiment, the original code could not predict the trend of frictional pressure gradient in two-phase flow as / increased, while the modified MARS-KS code showed a good estimation performance of the gradient with maximum error of 3.5%.
LabVIEW is mostly preferred to use in experiment, measurement and control as one of the useful thing in America and Europe. So, We tried performance experiment of a single-stage closed-type centrifugal pump by using the LabVIEW. The pump rpm and the shaft torque are measured by rpm sensor and torque sensor The test pump's maximum rpm, head, kW are 1,750, 13m, and 1.5kW, respectively The casing is made up with transparency acrylic for confirmation the flow patterns. We installed experimental equipment for air water two phase flow. This paper tries to analyze the single-phase flow characteristics through this air water two phase flow experimental apparatus. The performance results of a single-stage closed-type centrifugal pump satisfied reappearance and coincide well with head and coefficients according to the change of rpm.
A two-phase flow observed in a heat exchanger or nuclear power generation often has a profound effect on undesirable noise or flow characteristics. Void fraction, which refers to the ratio of gas (or liquid) to the total fluid, affects heat transfer coefficient, vibration and so forth. In other words, void fraction is one of most important parameters in two-phase flow since it contributes to comprehend the characteristics of two-phase flow. We developed a two-phase flow visualization system to measure cross-sectional and volumetric void fractions by using quick closing valves and image processing software. With this system, we could observe the plug, slug, and stratified flow patterns of two-phase flow and measure a myriad of void fractions. As a consequence of the experiment, we found that the estimated void fractions were largely coincident with the predictive values by Chisholm model.
This paper is a basic study on volatile organic compounds(VOC) recovery system in a crude oil carrier. VOC is easily evaporated in cargo tankers during loading and transportation of crude oil, causes serious environmental contamination and a huge economic loss. An ejector system is designed to mix VOC gas into crude oil flow to reduce VOC concentration. Detail two-phase flow inside the ejector is simulated using a commercial CFD code. To verify the numerical prediction, a scale-down experiment is conducted. Instead of crude oil and VOC, water and air are used as the working fluids. Flow characteristics and main parameters are obtained by two-phase flow visualization and PIV measurements. Air volume flow rate induced by the ejector is compared with respect to the volume flow rate of water using experimental and numerical results. Overall performance of the two-phase ejector predicted by the CFD simulation agrees well with that of the experiment.

To remove insoluble fission products, which could possibly cause reactor instability and significantly reduce heat transfer efficiency from primary system of molten salt reactor, a helium bubbling method is employed into a passive molten salt fast reactor. In this regard, two-phase flow behavior of molten salt and helium bubbles was investigated experimentally because the helium bubbles highly affect the circulation performance of working fluid owing to an additional drag force. As the helium flow rate is controlled, the change of key thermal-hydraulic parameters was analyzed through a two-phase experiment. Simultaneously, to assess the applicability of numerical model for the analysis of two-phase flow behavior, the numerical calculation was performed using the OpenFOAM 9.0 code. The accuracy of the numerical analysis code was evaluated by comparing it with the experimental data. Generally, numerical results showed a good agreement with the experiment. However, at the high helium injection rates, the prediction capability for void fraction of helium bubbles was relatively low. This study suggests that the multiphaseEulerFoam solver in OpenFOAM code is effective for predicting the helium bubbling but there exists a room for further improvement by incorporating the appropriate drag flux model and the population balance equation.
ECCMIX component was introduced in RELAP5/MOD3 for calculating the interfacial condensation. Compared to other existing components in RELAP5, user experience of ECCMIX component is restricted to developmental assessment applications. To evaluate the capability of the ECCMIX component, ECCS experiment was conducted which included single-phase and two-phase thermal mixing. The experiment was carried out with test sections containing a main pipe (70 mm inner diameter) and a branch pipe (21 mm inner diameter) under the atmospheric pressure. The steam mass flow in the main pipe ranged from 0 to 0.0347 kg/s, and the subcooled water mass flow in the branch pipe ranged from 0.0278 to 0.1389 kg/s. The comparison of the experimental data with the calculation results illuminated that although the ECCMIX component was more difficult to converge than Branch component, it was a more appropriate manner to simulate interfacial condensation under two-phase thermal mixing circumstance, while the two components had no differences under single-phase circumstance.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze two-phase flows of the hydrogen recirculation system. Two-phase flow modeling is one of the great challenges in the classical sciences. As with most problems in engineering, the interest in two-phase flow is due to its extreme importance in various industrial applications. In hydrogen recirculation systems of fuel cell, the changes in pressure and temperature affect the phase change of mixture. Therefore, two-phase flow analysis of the hydrogen recirculation system is very important. Two-phase computation fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, using a commercial CFD package FLUENT 6.2, were employed to calculate the gas-liquid flow. A two-phase flow calculation was conducted to solve continuity, momentum, energy equation for each phase. Then, the mass transfer between water vapor and liquid water was calculated. Through an experiment to measure production of liquid water with change of pressure, the analysis model was verified. The predictions of rate of condensed liquid water with change of pressure were within an average error of about 5%. A comparison of experimental and computed data was found to be in good agreement. The variations of performance, properties, mass fraction and two-phase flow characteristic of mixture with resepct to the fuel cell power were investigated.
In this paper, the reliability of the numerical analysis using the two phase flow on the behavior of the hydrogen bubbles in the alkali electrolysis stacks was investigated by comparing the results obtained from numerical analysis and flow visualization experiments. As the results, through comparison with results gotten to visualization experiments, it is possible to approximate analysis for the flow of hydrogen bubbles in the stacks by numerical analysis using the two-phase flow. Also, the flow of hydrogen bubbles around the electrodes could be similarly analyzed by numerical analysis using the two-phase flow.
A water driven ejector loop was designed and constructed for air absorption. The used ejector was horizontally installed in the loop and annular water jet at the throat entrained air through the circular pipe placed at the center of the ejector. Wide range of water flow rate was provided using two kinds of pumps in the loop. The tested range of water flow rate was 100${\ell}$ /min to 1,000 ${\ell}$/min. Two-phase flow inside the ejector loop was simulated by CFD analysis. Homogeneous particle model was used for void fraction prediction. Water and air flow rates and pressure drop through the ejector were automatically recorded by using the LabView based data acquisition system. Flow characteristics and air bubble velocity field downstream of the ejector were investigated by two-phase flow visualization and PIV measurement based on bubble shadow images. Overall performance of the two-phase ejector predicted by the CFD simulation agrees well with that of the experiment.
It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with 24 m of the inner diameter and 1,500 mm of the length. The used polymer materials are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results were shown that the drag is higher reduced by co-polymer rather than polyanylamide.
