  • This paper assesses the two-equation turbulence models available in a commercial code, FLUENT, for heat transfer in a turbulent heated pipe flow. In case of flow under $Re_D=10,000$, Standard $\kappa-\epsilon$ and Realizable $\kappa-\epsilon$ models overpredict the Nusselt number about $20\%$ compared with the experimental correlation, and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ model overpredicts about $30\%$ when the two-layer zonal method is employed. When wall function method is adopted, all $\kappa-\epsilon$ models show better predictions. Standard $\kappa-\omega$ and SST $\kappa-\omega$ models have the dependency on the first grid point ($0.3). As Reynolds number becomes high, the predictions of all $\kappa-\epsilon$ and $\kappa-\omega$ models are in a good agreement with the experimental correlation.

  • A new dispersion model for dense gas is constructed in the Lagrangian framework. Prediction of concentration by the proposed model is compared with measure data obtained in the experiment conducted in Thorney Island in 1984. Two major effects of dense gas dispersion, gravity slumping and stratification effect, are successfully incorporated into LDM (Lagrangian dense gas model). Entrainment effect is naturally modelled by introducing stochastic dispersion model with the effect of turbulence suppression by stratification. Not only various releasing conditions but also complex terrain can be extended to, although proposed model is appropriate for flat terrain.

  • Density currents have been easily observed in environmental flows, for instance turbidity currents and pollutant plumes in the oceans and rivers. In this study, we explored the propagation dynamics of density currents using the FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme, a turbulence numerical technique, is employed in a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (RANS). The numerical simulations focused on two different types of intrusive density flows: (1) propagating into a two-layer ambient fluid; (2) propagating into a linearly stratified fluid. In the study of intrusive density flows into a two-layer ambient fluid, intrusive speeds were compared with laboratory experiments and analytical solutions. The numerical model shows good quantitative agreement for predicting propagation speed of the density currents. We also numerically reproduced the effect of the ratio of current depth to the overall depth of fluid. The numerical model provided excellent agreement with the analytical values. It was also clearly demonstrated that RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme within RANS framework is able to accurately simulate the dynamics of density currents. Simulations intruding into a continuously stratified fluid with the various buoyancy frequencies are carried out. These simulations demonstrate that three different propagation patterns can be developed according to the value of $h_n/H$ : (1) underflows developed with $h_n/H=0$ ; (2) overflows developed when $h_n/H=1$ ; (3) intrusive interflow occurred with the condition of 0 < $h_n/H$ < 1.

  • Wall functions have been widely used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and can save significant computational costs compared to other near-wall flow treatment strategies. However, most of the existing wall functions were based on the asymptotic characteristics of near-wall flow quantities, which are inapplicable in complex and non-equilibrium flows. A modified wall function is thus derived in this study based on flow over a plate at zero-pressure gradient, instead of on the basis of asymptotic formulations. Turbulent kinetic energy generation ($G_P$), dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) and shear stress (${\tau}_{\omega}$) are composed together as the near-wall expressions. Performances of the modified wall function combined with the nonlinear realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are investigated in homogeneous equilibrium atmosphere boundary layer (ABL) and flow around a 6 m cube. The computational results and associated comparisons to available full-scale measurements show a clear improvement over the standard wall function, especially in reproducing the boundary layer flow. It is demonstrated through the two case studies that the modified wall function is indeed adaptive and can yield accurate prediction results, in spite of its simplicity.

Beach cusp을 유지하는 것으로 알려진 synchronous edge waves는 같은 주기와 파고를 지니는 두 개의 Cnoidal wave가 전면해역에서 비스듬히 조우 되도록 조파하여 재현하였다. • To investigate the non-Gaussian properties of fluctuating wind pressures and the error margin of extreme wind loads on a long-span curved roof with matching and mismatching ratios of turbulence integral scales to depth (Lux/D), a series of synchronized pressure tests on the rigid model of the complex curved roof were conducted. The regions of Gaussian distribution and non-Gaussian distribution were identified by two criteria, which were based on the cumulative probabilities of higher-order statistical moments (skewness and kurtosis coefficients, Sk and Ku) and spatial correlation of fluctuating wind pressures, respectively. Then the characteristics of fluctuating wind-loads in the non-Gaussian region were analyzed in detail in order to understand the effects of turbulence integral-scale. Results showed that the fluctuating pressures with obvious negative-skewness appear in the area near the leading edge, which is categorized as the non-Gaussian region by both two identification criteria. Comparing with those in the wind field with matching Lux/D, the range of non-Gaussian region almost unchanged with a smaller Lux/D, while the non-Gaussian features become more evident, leading to higher values of Sk, Ku and peak factor. On contrary, the values of fluctuating pressures become lower in the wind field with a smaller Lux/D, eventually resulting in underestimation of extreme wind loads. Hence, the matching relationship of turbulence integral scale to depth should be carefully considered as estimating the extreme wind loads of long-span roof by wind tunnel tests.

  • The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k-$\omega$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in the cavity. An explicit 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme and an upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the van Leer limiters are used for time and space discritizations, respectively. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case, and same L/D and W/D ratio of I for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 1.5 and 450000 respectively. In the three-dimensional flow, the field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follows Rossiter's formula. In the two-dimensional simulation, the self-sustained oscillating flow has more violent fluctuation inside the cavity. The primary fluctuating frequencies of two- and three- dimensional flow agree very well with the 2nd mode of Rossiter's frequency. In the three-dimensional flow, the 1st mode of frequency could be seen.

  • This paper is a numerical study concerning how the interactions between a pair of the vortices effect flow field and heat transfer. The flow field (common flow down) behind a vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on a half-delta winglet. Also, the energy equation and the Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, are solved by the method of AF-ADI. The present results predict that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it Is directed away from the wall. Although some discrepancies are observed near the center of the vortex core, the overall performance of the computational model is found to be satisfactory.

  • The unsteady transitional boundary layer due to rotor-stator interaction was studied at two operation points, the design and one off design points. The off design point leads to lower blade loading and lower Reynolds number. A Navier-Stokes code developed in the previous study was parallelized to expedite computations. A low Reynolds number turbulence model was used to close the momentum equations. All computations show good agreement with experimental data. The wake induced transitional strip on the suction side of the stator is clearly captured at design point operation. There is no noticeable change in shape and phase angle of the wake induced strip even in the laminar sublayer. The wake induced transitional strip at off design point shows more complex structure. The wake induced transitional strip is observed only in the turbulent layer, and becomes obscure in the laminar sublayer and buffer layer. This behavior is probably consequent upon that the transition is governed by both wake induced strip and natural transition mechanism by Tollmien-Schlichting wave.
