This paper presents the dimensionless wall distance, y+ effect on SST turbulent model for wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine was used for the study, which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available. The near wall treatment and turbulent characteristics have important role for proper CFD simulation. Most of the CFD development in this area is focused on advanced turbulence model closures including second moment closure models, and so called Low-Reynolds (low-Re) number and two-layer turbulence models. However, in many cases CFD aerodynamic predictions based on these standard models still show a large degree of uncertainty, which can be attributed to the use of the $\epsilon$-equation as the turbulence scale equation and the associated limitations of the near wall treatment. The present paper demonstrates the y+ definition effect on SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model with advanced automatic near wall treatment model and Gamma theta transitional model for transition from lamina to turbulent flow using commercial ANSYS-CFX. In all cases the SST model shows to be superior, as it gives more accurate predictions and is less sensitive to grid variations.
This study aims at modeling boundary layers (BLs) encountered in sparse and built environments (i.e. open, suburban and urban) at the subsonic Wind Tunnel (WT) at Ryerson University (RU). This WT has an insignificant turbulence intensity and requires a flow-conditioning system consisting of turbulence generating elements (i.e., spires, roughness blocks, barriers) to achieve proper turbulent characteristics. This system was developed and validated in the current study in three phases. In phase I, several Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the tunnel with generating elements were conducted to understand the effect of each element on the flow. This led to a preliminary design of the system, in which horizontal barriers (slats) are added to the spires to introduce turbulence at higher levels of the tunnel. This design was revisited in phase II, to specify slat dimensions leading to target BLs encountered by tall buildings. It was found that rougher BLs require deeper slats and, therefore, two-layer slats (one fixed and one movable) were implemented to provide the required range of slat depth to model most BLs. This system only involves slat movement to change the BL, which is very useful for automatic wind tunnel testing of tall buildings. The system was validated in phase III by conducting experimental wind tunnel testingof the system and comparing the resulting flow field with the target BL fields considering two length scales typically used for wind tunnel testing. A very good match was obtained for all wind field characteristics which confirms accuracy of the system.
Numerical methods are applied to simulate the smoke behavior in a ventilated tunnel using large eddy simulation (LES) which is incorporated in FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) with proper combustion and radiation model. In this study, present numerical results are compared with data obtained from experiments on pool fires in a ventilated tunnel. The model tunnel is $182m(L){\times}5.4m(W){\times}2.4m(H)$. Two fire scenarios with different ventilation rates are considered with two different fire strengths. The present results are analyzed with those from LES without combustion and radiation model and from RANS ($\kappa-\epsilon$) model as well. Temperature distributions caused by fire in tunnel are compared with each other. It is found that thermal stratification and smoke back-layer can be predicted by FDS and the temperature predictions by FDS show better results than LES without combustion and radiation model. The FDS solver, however, failed to predict correct flow pattern when the high ventilation rate is considered in tunnel because of the defects in the tunnel-inlet turbulence and the near-wall turbulence.
This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by the interaction of a pair of vortices are studied numerically. To analyze the common flow up produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow, the pseudo-compressibility viscous method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flows. To predict turbulence characteristics, a two-layer $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used on the flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary The computational results predict accurately Reynolds stress, turbulent kinetic energy and flow field generated by the vortex generators. The numerical results, such as thermal boundary layers, skin friction characteristics and heat transfers, are also reasonably close to the experimental data.
The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-Dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k - w turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in cavities. Numerical method is upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the Van Leer limiters, and time accuracy is used explicit 4th stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Cavity flows are Comparison of two- and three-dimensional. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case. and same L/D and W/D ratio is 1 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are held constant at 1.5 and 450000 respectively. For the three-dimensional case, the flow field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follow Rossiter's formula. On the other hand, the self-sustained oscillating flow transitions to a 'wake mode' for the two-dimensional simulation, with more violent fluctuations inside the cavity.
Anisotropic distribution of the turbulent kinetic energy and the near-field excitations are the main causes of the steady state Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) which could lead to fretting wear damage in vertically arranged supported slender rods. In this article, a combined Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Structural Mechanic (CSM) approach named two-way Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is used to investigate the modal characteristics of a typical rod's vibration. Performance of an Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence models on asymmetric fluctuations of the flow field are investigated. Using the LES turbulence model, any large deformation damps into a weak oscillation which remains in the system. However, it is challenging to use LES in two-way FSI problems from fluid domain discretization point of view which is investigated in this article as the innovation. It is concluded that the near-wall meshes whiten the viscous sub-layer is of great importance to estimate the Root Mean Square (RMS) of FIV amplitude correctly as a significant fretting wear parameter otherwise it merely computes the frequency of FIV.

The complete, fully-elliptic Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using a two-layer model, in the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model, for the axisymmetric body. Numerically generated boundary-fitted coordinate system and the finite analytic methods are used to solve the governing equations. Calculations are started after the middle body with given inlet conditions. The velocities and the turbulent quantities at the inlet section are specified by solving the boundary layer equations or by standard flat-plate boundary profiles. The effects of the inlet conditions on the solution are investigated.
Two versions of anisotropic k-ε turbulence model are incorporated in the modified k-ε model of Sohn et al. to avoid the need for the experimental normal stress value in the model and applied to convergent and divergent flows with strong and adverse pressure gradients in the plane of symmetry of a body of revolution. The models are the nonlinear k-ε model of Speziale and the anisotropic model of Nisizima & Yoshizawa. All of the models yield satisfactory results for relatively complex flow on a plane-of-symmetry boundary layer. The results of the models are compared with those results of experimental normal stress value.
A numerical model is constructed to simulate the interactions of oblique shock wave / turbulent boundary layer on a strongly heated wall. The heated wall temperature is two times higher than the adiabatic wall temperature and the shock wave is strong enough to induce boundary layer separation. The numerical diffusion in the finite volume method is reduced by the use of a higher order convection scheme(UMIST scheme) which is a TVD version of QUICK scheme. The turbulence model is Chen-Kim two time scale model. The comparison of the wall pressure distribution with the experimental data ensures the validity of this numerical model. The effect of strong wall heating enlarges the separation region upstream and downstream. In order to eliminate the separation, wall suction is applied at the shock foot position. The bleeding slot width is about same as the upstream boundary layer thickness and suction mass flow is 10% of the flow rate in the upstream boundary layer. The final configuration of the shock reflection pattern and the wall pressure distribution approach to the non-viscous value when wall suction is applied.
