The governing equations for high-speed lateral atomizing injector nozzle flow based on the LES-VOF model in conjunction with the CSF model are presented, and then an integrated parallel computation are performed to clarify the detailed atomization process of a high speed nozzle flow and to acquire data which is difficult to confirm by experiment such as atomization length, liquid core shapes, droplets size distributions, spray angle and droplets velocity profiles. According to the present analysis, it is found that the atomization rate and the droplets-gas two-phase flow characteristics are controlled by the turbulence perturbation upstream of the injector nozzle, hydrodynamic instabilities at the gas-liquid interface, shear stresses between liquid core and periphery of the jet. Furthermore, stable and a high-resolution computation can be attained in the high density ratio (pl/ pg = 554) conditions conditions by using our numerical method.
Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.
For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful device as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. In this paper, the aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet device itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle geometry, the chamber pressure and temperature. Specifically attention is paid to the effect of the chamber shape between the straight nozzle and the bent nozzle by 90 degrees on the nozzle flow properties. The thrust magnitudes are compared between the two shapes. Whether the way the nozzle is bent at the joint affects the nozzle performance is also investigated. Effects of the length and the divergence angle of the nozzle on the thrust are also quantified among three different side jet nozzles.

A time-iterative compressible Navier-Stokes code is developed to analyze the flowfield of a two-dimensional ejector nozzle system. A parametric study has been made for two controlling parameters, duct to nozzle area ratio and nozzle pressure ratio. Results show that there is an optimum area ratio for an efficient pumping of secondary flow. At high area ratios, a freestream flow directly passes through the mixing duct without giving adequate pumping. While at low area ratios, jet boundary is acting as a blockage to incoming flow. The nozzle pressure ratio variation shows that the pumping rate increases as the pressure ratio increases provided there is no interaction between the shroud wall and the shock cell structure.

Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique of propulsion jet. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various mass flow rate of secondary flow. Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, Thrust-vector control using a DTN is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the coefficient of discharge.

This paper addresses an analytical study on the gas-solid two phase flows in a nozzle. The primary purpose is to get recognition into the gas-solid suspension flows and to investigate the particle motion and its influence on the gas flow field. The present study is the primal step to comprehend the gas-solid suspension flow in the convergent-divergent nozzle. This paper try to made a development of an analytical model to study the back pressure ratio, particles loading and the particle diameter effect on gas-solid suspension flow. Mathematical model of gas-solid two phase flow was developed based on the single phase flow models to solve the quasi-one-dimensional mass, momentum equations to calculate the steady pressure field. The influence of particles loading and particle diameter is analyzed. The results obtained show that the suspension flow of smaller diameter particles has almost same trend as that of single phase flow using ideal gas as working fluid. And the presence of particles will weaken the strength of the shock wave; the bigger particle will have larger slip velocity with gas flow. The thrust coefficient is found to be higher for larger particles/gas loading or back pressure ratio, but it also depends on the ambient pressure.

This paper concentrates on the development of a computational design program to determine nozzle size in water jet, combing the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. To achieve the above objective, a two-dimensional model was developed for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard ${k}-\varepsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermo fluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.
Numerical simulations of supersonic impinging jet flows are carried out using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. This paper focuses on the oscillatory flow features associated with the variation of the nozzle pressure ratio and nozzle-to-plate distance. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation from computational results are in accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. The variation of this frequency with distance show a staging behavior. Computed results for the case of nozzle pressure ratio variation for a fixed nozzle-to-plate distance also demonstrate a staging behavior. These two seemingly different staging behaviors are found to obey the same frequency-distance characteristics when the frequency and the distance are normalized by using the length of the shock cell.

Accuracy of gas flow measurements using sonic nozzle and factors which influence on the discharge coefficients of sonic nozzle are investigated with high pressure gas flow standard measurement system. The gas flow measurement system comprises two compressors, storage tank, temperature control loop, sonic nozzle test section, weighing tank, gyroscopic scale and data acquisition system. The experiments are performed at various nozzle throat diameter and inlet pressure. Overall uncertainty of discharge coefficients is estimated to less than .+-.0.2% and most of experimental data fall into this range. Dependence of discharge coefficients on the Reynolds number is good agreement with those suggested in ISO document. The influence of swirl on the discharge coefficients becomes greater as the nozzle throat diameter is enlarged. The discharge coefficient of conical nozzle shows about 4.5% lower discharge coefficients than those of toroidal nozzle, but variation trend with Reynolds number is very similar each other and reproducibility of data is very good.

A numerical analysis of two phase flow in the solid rocket nozzle was conducted. Stoke number was defined over the various aluminum oxide($AI_2$$O_3$) particle sizes and particle trajectories were treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability was considered by the definition of Weber number in a rocket nozzle. Large particles are divided after the nozzle throat as the flow accelerates rapidly. The division of particles changes the particle distribution at the nozzle exit. From the above results, it was found that the nozzle converge section surface might be affected by aluminum oxide particles. Also, Mechanical erosion rate of nozzle surface was predicted for different materials.
