This paper presents a three dimensional modeling and dynamic anlaysis of a hydraulic excavator. An excavator is composed of a ground, an under-frame, two idlers, two spockets, an upper-frame, a boom, an arm, a bucket two yokes, two connecting rods, two boom cylinders, an arm cylinder, and a bucket cylinder. Each cylinder is modeled with two separate bodies which are linked to each other by a translational joint. The three dimensioanl model of the excavator consists of 22 bodies and each body is assumed as rigid. This paper suggested the maximum lifting capability, a critical load and reaction forces at joints form the DADS simulation. It was presumed that the reaction forces due to a critical load are three times bigger than those due to the maximum lifting capacity.

The CUPID code has been developed for a transient, three-dimensional, two-phase flow analysis at a component scale. It has been validated against a wide range of two-phase flow experiments. Especially, to assess its applicability to single- and two-phase flow analyses in the Calandria vessel of a CANDU nuclear reactor, it was validated using the experimental data of the 1/4-scaled facility of a Calandria vessel at the STERN laboratory. In this study, a preliminary thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CANDU reactor moderator tank using the CUPID code is carried out, which is based on the results of the previous studies. The complicated internal structure of the Calandria vessel and the inlet nozzle was modeled in a simplified manner by using a porous media approach. One of the most important factors in the analysis was found to be the modeling of the tank inlet nozzle. A calculation with a simple inlet nozzle modeling resulted in thermal stratification by buoyance, leading to a boiling from the top of the Calandria tank. This is not realistic at all and may occur due to the lack of inlet flow momentum. To improve this, a new nozzle modeling was used, which can preserve both mass flow and momentum flow at the inlet nozzle. This resulted in a realistic temperature distribution in the tank. In conclusion, it was shown that the CUPID code is applicable to thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CANDU reactor moderator tank using the cost-effective porous media approach and that the inlet nozzle modeling is very important for the flow analysis in the tank.

A lumped model is proposed to predict liquid ejection characteristics of a thermally driven inkjet print head. The model is based on a two-dimensional heat conduction equation, an empirical pressure-temperature equation and a nonlinear hydraulic flow-pressure equation. It has been simulated through the construction of an equivalent R-C circuit, and subsequently analyzed using SIMULINK and a circuit simulation tool, PLECS. Using the model, heating and cooling characteristics of the head are predicted to be in agreement with the IR temperature measurements. The effects of the head geometry on the drop ejection are also analyzed using the nonlinear hydraulic model. The present model can be used as a design tool for a better design of thermal inkjet print heads.

The Richards' equation attracts the attention of several scientific researchers due to its importance in the hydrogeology field especially porous soil. This work presents a numerical method to solve the two dimensional Richards' equation. The pressure form and the mixed form of Richards' equation are solved numerically using a bivariate diamond finite volumes scheme. Euler explicit scheme is used for the time discretization. Different test cases are done to validate the accuracy and the efficiency of our numerical model and to compare the possible numerical strategies. We started with a first simple test case of Richards' pressure form where the hydraulic capacity and the hydraulic conductivity are taken constant and then a second test case where the hydrodynamics parameters are linear variables. Finally, a third test case where the soil parameters are taken according the Van Gunchten empirical model is presented.

The understanding and prediction of the behavior of flow in open channels are important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Recently, frequent drought has increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows for reserving instream flow. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. Several tests were performed in developed all elements(4-Node, 6-Node, 8-Node elements) for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. The U-shaped channel of flow and natural river of flow were performed for tests. The results were compared with these of laboratory experiments and RMA-2 model. Such results showed that solutions of high order elements were better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Also, the suggested model displayed reasonable velocity distribution compare to RMA-2 model in meandering domain for application of natural river flow. Accordingly, the developed finite element model is feasible and produces reliable results for simulation of two dimensional natural river flow. Also, One contribution of this study is to present that results can lead to significant gain in analyzing the accurate flow behavior associated with hydraulic structure such as weir and water intake station and flow of chute and pool.
The relevance of turbulent mixing in estuarine numerical models for stratified two-layer shallow water flows is analysed in this paper. A one-dimensional numerical model was developed for this purpose by extending an immiscible two-layer model with an additional source term, which accounts for turbulent mixing effects, namely the entrainment of fluid from the lower to the upper layer. The entrainment rate is quantified by an empirical equation as a function of the bulk Richardson number. A finite volume method based on an approximated Roe solver was used to solve the governing coupled system of partial differential equations. A comparison of numerical results with and without entrainment is presented to illustrate the influence of entrainment on both the salt-water intrusion length and lower layer dynamics. Furthermore, one example is given to demonstrate how entrainment terms may help to stabilize the numerical scheme and prevent a possible loss of hyperbolicity. Finally, the model with entrainment is validated by comparing the numerical results to field measurements.
Two-dimensional tidal and tidal residual currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated by field observations, hydraulic and numerical experiments. The results of hydraulic and numerical model experiments roughly coincide with the field measurements. Maximum tidal currents during the spring and neap tides in Kaduk and Kyunnaeryang channel and the central channel of Chinhae Bay are strong as 90 to 110 and 30 to 40 cm/s respectively, and strong tidal residual currents having numerous eddies take place. Maximum tidal currents during the spring and neap tides in the western and northern parts of the bay are weak as below 30 and 10 cm/s respectively, and also tidal residual currents are relatively weak. Tidal residual currents in the northern part of Kajo-do go toward the north, whereas the currents in the southern part move down the bay, and the currents rotating clockwise occur around Bu-do. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river inflow, and such phenomena are more remarkable during he neap tide than the spring tide.
The Transitional zone between bridge abutment and earthwork is one of the representative vulnerable zones in railway where differential settlements may take place due to the different supportive stiffness. Although transitional zones are managed with stricter standards than those of the other earthwork zones either in the design and construction stages, it is very difficult to prevent differential settlement perfectly. A three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed by applying train moving load in this study. The analytical model including abutments and earthwork zones was constituted with rail, sleepers, track concrete layer (TCL), hydraulic stabilized base (HSB), reinforced road bed, and road bed using railway and road base structure. The clamp connecting the rail and sleeper were also modeled as the element with spring coefficient. The train wheel is modeled in the actual size and moved on the rail with 300 km/hr speed. The deformation characteristics at each point of the rail and the ground were considered in detail when moving the train wheel. The analysis results were compared with those from the two-dimensional analysis without considering moving load. The research results show that displacement and stress were greater in the three-dimensional analysis than in other analyses, and the three-dimensional analysis with moving load should be performed to evaluate railway performance.
Numerical models were employed to investigate the hydrodynamics of water flow in the lake behind a dam and the spillway where supercritical flows and negative pressures are likely to occur. In this study, 2-D model, RMA2 was employed to examine the upstream flow pattern and 3-D CFD model, FLUENT was used to evaluate the three-dimensional flow in the approaching region and flow distributions in the spillways and discharge culverts. The bathymetry and the details of structures were carefully taken into consideration in building the models. The results from applying the 2-D model for the planned Hantan River Dam show that large eddies, the velocity of which reaches up to 1 m/s are occurring in several places upstream of the dam. That means that the 2-D numerical model could be utilized to investigate the two-dimensional flow patterns after the construction of a dam. Three-dimensional numerical results show that the approach flow varies depending on stages and discharge conditions, and velocities at spillways, discharge culverts, and sediment flushing tunnels are differently distributed. The velocity distributions obtained from the numerical model and a hydraulic model at the centerline of spillways 100 m upstream of the dam show reasonably similar results. It is expected that 2-D and 3-D numerical models ate useful tools to help optimize the dam design through investigating the flow patterns in the spillway and at the upstream of the dam, which is not always feasible in hydraulic modeling.

Recent studies show the possibility of more frequent extreme events as a result of the changing climate. These weather extremes, such as excessive rainfall, result to debris flow, river overflow and urban flooding, which post a substantial threat to the community. Therefore, an effective flood model is a crucial tool in flood disaster mitigation. In recent years, a number of flood models has been established; however, the major challenge in developing effective and accurate inundation models is the inconvenience of running multiple models for separate conditions. Among the solutions in recent researches is the development of the combined 1D-2D flood modeling. The coupled 1D-2D river flood modeling allows channel flows to be represented in 1D and the overbank flow to be modeled over two-dimension. To test the efficiency of this approach, this research aims to assess the capability of HEC-RAS model's implementation of the combined 1D-2D hydraulic simulation of river overflow inundation, and compare with the results of GERIS and FLUMENS 2D flood model. Results show similar output to the flood models that had used different methods. This proves the applicability of the HEC-RAS 1D-2D coupling method as a powerful tool in simulating accurate inundation for flood events.
