  • Turbulent flow characteristics of a two - dimensional oblique plate impinging jet(OPIJ) were experimentally investigated. The jet mean velocity and turbulent intensity profIles were also measured along the plate. The jet Reynolds numbers(Re, based on the nozzle width)ranged from 10, 000 to 35, 000, the nozzle - to - plate distance(H/B) from 2 to 16, and the oblique angle (a) from 60 to 90 degree. It has been found that the stagnation point shifted toward the minor flow region as the oblique angle decreases and the position of the stagnation point nearly coin¬cided with that of the maximum turbulent intensity.

  • Numerical analyses have been carried out to analyze the three-dimensional turbulent heat transfer by impingement jet on a concave surface with variation of geometric configurations. Three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-stokes equations have been calculated using the shear stress transport turbulent model. The numerical results for heat transfer rate were validated in comparison with the experimental data. The distance between jet nozzles and angle of inclined jet nozzle were selected as the geometric variables. Area-averaged Nusselt numbers on concave surface are evaluated to find the characteristics of heat transfer with the two geometric variables. The heat transfer increases as the distance between jet nozzles increases, and the inclined impinging jets show much better heat transfer performance than the vertical impinging jet.

  • The turbulent structures of the free plane jet and two dimensional impinging jet are investigated experimentally. In order to get the two dimensional jet, the contour of the cubic equation suggested by Morel is used for a contracting nozzle. A linearized constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is used for measurement. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities are measured along the centerline of the jet. Jet halp width spatial double velocity correlation coefficients and integral length scales are obtained. It is established that the free plane jet is truly self-preserving about 40 slot widths downstream of the nozzle. The experiments for the impinging jet are carried out at four different impingement wall locations within the self-preserving region of the free plane jet, and comparing the results with that of free plane jet, the mean velocity is changed in the region of 0.25H and turbulent intensities are affected in the region of 0.2H from the wall, respectively, where H means the distance between the nozzle exit and the wall.

  • Experimental results and numerical computations were conducted to investigate the effect of the confined wall on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. Experimental results and Numerical solutions were obtained by using the particle image velocimetry and the commercial CFD code (CFX 11), respectively. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (Re=5,000), conditions of confined wall (unventilate), nozzle to plate spacings ($H/W=1{\sim}16$), and nozzle to nozzle spacing (S/W=6). Experimental and numerical results were agreed well with each other. The maximum heat transfer point was found variation of nozzle to plate spacings.

  • PIV experiments were carried out to visualize the velocity distribution of the sweeping jet impinging onto a flat plate and kinematic behavior of the jet from the fluidic oscillator. Two parameters such as four different Re cases and four different jet-to-wall distances were examined. Time-resolved two dimensional PIV measurements were performed for both streamwise and normal planes respect to the jet axis. Ensemble averaged and phase averaged velocity fields were obtained for the tested range of parameters. The sweeping frequency of the jet increases linearly with increase of Re. The kinetic energy of the sweeping jet decreases as the distance from the jet to the impinging plate increases. In addition, turbulence flow is generated due to the swinging motion of sweeping jet, and various vortices such as primary and secondary vortex are observed near the impinging wall.

  • Numerical calculations has been performed for the flow and heat transfer to a circular cylinder from a hot circular impinging air jet. The characteristics of the flow and heat transfer are investigated and compared with the two-dimensional flow. The present study lays emphasis on the investigation on the flow and heat transfer of the three-dimensionality. The effects of the buoyancy force and the size of jet are also studied. The noticeable difference between the three and the two-dimensional cases is that there is axial flow of low temperature into the center-plane of the cylinder from the outside in the recirculation region. Local Nusselt number over the cylinder surface has higher value for the large jet as compared with that of the small jet since the energy loss of hot jet to the ambient air decreases with increase of the jet size. As buoyancy force increases the flow accelerates so that the period of cooling by the ambient air is reduced, which results in higher local Nusselt number over the surface.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain the unstable characteristics of the high-speed two-dimensional jet impinging normally onto a flat plate. The study is based on the feedback model and the experiment of the frequency characteristics of the impinging tones. Using the experimental data for the tonal frequencies of the impinging tones the convection speed of the unstable jet is obtained along with all the other features. Three kinds of unstable modes are clarified: asymmetric $A_{1}$ and $A_{2}$ and symmetric S. The condition for the excitation of each mode is found in terms of Strouhal number and Reynolds number. The convection speed is estimated and discussed in comparison with existing theoretical models. It is found that the convection speed increases with frequency when the mode is asymmetric, but decreases when it is symmetric. In addition, the characteristics of the high-speed impinging jet are compared with the low-speed impinging jet.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the initial turbulent intensity on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. A square rod was installed at the nozzle exit to increase initial turbulent intensity. A hot wire probe and thermochromic liquid crystal technique were used to measure the turbulent intensity and the surface temperature. All measurements were made over a range of nozzle-to-plate distance from 1 to 10 at Re=20,000. When the rod is not installed, the maximum stagnation point Nusselt number is occurred at H/B=9. A higher initial turbulent intensity enhanced the heat transfer on the surface. A correlation between stagnation point Nusselt number and turbulent intensity are presented.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of a two-dimensional oblique impinging jet were experimentally investigated. The local heat transfer coefficients were measured by a thermochromic liquid crystal. The jet Reynolds number studied was varied from 10000 to 35000, the nozzle-to-plate distance(H/B) from 2 to 16, and the oblique angle($\alpha$) from $60^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$. It was observed that the local Nusselt numbers in the minor flow region were larger than those in the major flow region at the same distance along the plate due to the higher levels in the turbulent intensity caused by more active mixing of the jet flow.

  • Because of good performance of heat transfer characteristics, impinging jets are widely used in many industries for cooling or heating. And the present num erical studies attempt to show the effects of impinging jet. This paper considers the application of the turbulent models to impinging jet flow with pulsed inlet. It is assumed two-dimensional turbulent flows. The jet Reynolds num ber is set at 23,000 and the distance from the exit of the nozzle to the plate is 3 times larger than the diam eter of the nozzle. The influence of the Strouhal num ber(pulsation frequency) on Nusselt number at the impinging region is investigated. Strouhal numbers are ranged 0.0 to 0.5 and the forcing amplitudes are 1%,5%,9% of mean inlet velocity. In this study, the Nusselt number at the impinging region is sensitive to the pulsation frequency. Heat transfer coefficient strongly increase at Strouhal num ber of 0.4.
