Two-stage power factor correction (PFC) converter with a single PWM controller is proposed. It consists of a power factor pre-regulator cascaded by an isolated DC/DC converter as in a conventional two-stage approach. However, a single PWM controller is used as in a single-stage, single-switch PFC approach. This converter gives the goof power factor correction, low line current harmonic distortions, and tight output voltage regulations. This converter also has a high efficiency by employing an soft switching method. The proposed approach has advantages such as high performance over the single-stage approach and low cost over two-stage approach. The experimental results obtained on a 300W (30V/10A) prototype PFC converter are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Many papers have used a two-stage approach of first calculating DEA efficiency scores and then seeking to correlate these scores with various environmental variables. Most of the studies have not checked whether such a two-stage approach is statistically valid for identifying significant environmental variables. Recently Simar and Wilson (2007) (SW) introduce a sensible data generating process and bootstrap procedure based on truncated regression for the two-stage approach. Banker and Natarajan (2008) (BN) provide a statistical foundation for the two-stage approach comprising a DEA followed by an ordinary least squares or maximum likelihood estimation. Researchers have to identify an approach suitable for their research circumstances in terms of properties, merits, demerits, and robustness to plausible departures from its chosen data generating process. We summarize the foundations and properties of the two-stage procedures suggested by SW and BN. And we discuss merits and demerits of those procedures. Also using Monte Carlo simulation we assess their relative performance under several misspecified settings.
Purpose: This study deals with a production planning and scheduling problem to minimize the total weighted tardiness on hybrid flow shop with sets of non-identical parallel machines on stages, where parallel machines in the set are dedicated to perform specific subsets of jobs and sequence-dependent setup times are also considered. Methods: A two-stage approach, that applies MILP model in the 1st stage and dispatching rules in the 2nd stage, is proposed in this paper. The MILP model is used to assign jobs to a specific machine in order to equalize the workload of the machines at each stage, while new dispatching rules are proposed and applied to sequence jobs in the queue at each stage. Results: The proposed two-stage approach was implemented by using a commercial MILP solver and a commercial simulation software and a case study was developed based on the spark plug manufacturing process, which is an automotive component, and verified using the company's actual production history. The computational experiment shows that it can reduce the tardiness when used in conjunction with the dispatching rule. Conclusion: This proposed two-stage approach can be used for HFS systems with dedicated machines, which can be evaluated in terms of tardiness and makespan. The method is expected to be used for the aggregated production planning or shop floor-level production scheduling.

Switching power supply systems are widely used in many industrial fields. Power factor correction (PFC) circuits have a tendency to be applied in new power supply designs. The input active power factor correction (APFC) circuits can be implemented in either the two-stage approach or the single-stage approach. The two-stage approach can be classified into boost type PFC circuit and dc/dc converter. The power factor correction circuit with a boost converter used as an input power source is studied in this paper. In a boost power factor correction circuit there are two feedback control loops, which are a current feedback loop and a voltage feedback loop. In this paper, the regulation performance of output voltage and compensator to improve the transient response presented at the continuous conduction mode (CCM) of the boost PFC circuit is analyzed. The validity of designed boost PFC circuit is confirmed by MATLAB simulation and experimental results.
In this research article, acid resistance, sulphate resistance and sorptivity of self compacted concrete (SCC) prepared from C&D waste have been discussed. To improve the above properties of self compacted recycled aggregate concrete (SCRAC) along with mechanical and durability properties, different two stage mixing approaches (TSMA and TSMAsfc) were followed. In the proposed two stage mixing approach (TSMAsfc), silica fume, a proportional amount of cement and a proportional amount of water were mixed in premix stage which fills the pores and cracks of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The concrete specimen prepared using above mixing approaches were immersed in 1% concentration of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) solution for 28, 90 and 180 days for evaluating the acid resistance of SCRAC. Experimental results concluded that the proposed two stage mixing approach (TSMAsfc) is most suitable for acid resistance and sulphate resistance in terms of weight loss and strength loss due to the elimination of pores and cracks in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). In modified two stage mixing approach, the pores and cracks of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) were filled up and make ITZs of SCRAC stronger. Microstructure analysis was carried out to justify the reason of improvement of ITZs by electron probe micro analyser (EPMA) analysis. X-ray mapping was also done to know the presence of strength contributing elements presents in the concrete sample. It was established that SCRAC with modified mixing approach have shown improved results in terms of acid resistance, sulphate resistance, sorptivity and mechanical properties.

This study was conducted to confirm the applicability of recycled aggregates as aggregates for structural concrete as a way to respond to the shortage of natural aggregates. The two-stage mixing approach developed by Tam et al. is known to be a method that can improve the mechanical performance of recycled aggregate concrete without the installation of new additional facilities. In this work, modified version of two stage mixing approach, which was used in our earlier work, was introduced to prepare mortar specimens with recycled fine aggregate, and the compressive strength and fire resistance were compared to mortar mixed with normal mixing approach. According to the experimental results from mortar with recycled fine aggregate, the use of two-stage mixing approach was found to be more effective than normal mixing approach for compressive strength development. In addition, the residual strengths of the mortar with two-stage mixing approach was higher than mortar made of normal mixing approach after exposure to 600 and 900 ℃. It is possible to manufacture high-performance cement composites with recycled fine aggregates through the active use of the two-stage mixing approach.

The nesting of two-dimensional patterns onto a given raw sheet has applications in a number industries. It is a common problem often faced by designers in the shipbuilding, garment making, blanking die design, glass and wood industries. This paper presents a multi-stage layout approach for nesting two-dimensional patterns by using artificial intelligence techniques with a relatively short computation time. The raw material with irregular boundaries and internal defects which must be considered in various cases of nesting was also investigated in this study. The proposed nesting approach consists of two stages : initial layout stage and layout improvement stage. The initial layout configuration is achieved by the self-organizing assisted layout(SOAL) algorithm while in the layout improvement stage, the simulated annealing(SA) is adopted for a finer optimization.

This paper analyzed PFC of active clamp ZVS flybark converter by adding two method PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit-two-stage and single-stage. The addition of active clamp circuit also provide a mechanism fur achieving ZVS of both the primary and auxiliary switches. ZVS also limits the turn off di/dt of the output rectifier, reducing rectifier switching loss and switching noise, due to diode reverse recovery. As a results, the proposed converters have characteristics of the reduced switching noise and high efficiency in comparison to conventional flyback converter. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed converters improve the input PF of 300[W] ZVS flyback converter by adding single-stage two-stage PFC circuit.
This paper proposes a two-stage imaging approach for quantitative inspection of damages in metallic plates using the fundamental anti-symmetric mode of ($A_0$) Lamb wave. The proposed approach employs a number of transducers to transmit and receive $A_0$ Lamb wave pulses, and hence, to sequentially scan the plate structures before and after the presence of damage. The approach is applied to image the corrosion damages, which are simplified as a reduction of plate thickness in this study. In stage-one of the proposed approach a damage location image is reconstructed by analyzing the cross-correlation of the wavelet coefficient calculated from the excitation pulse and scattered wave signals for each transducer pairs to determine the damage location. In stage-two the Lamb wave diffraction tomography is then used to reconstruct a thickness reduction image for evaluating the size and depth of the damage. Finite element simulations are carried out to provide a comprehensive verification of the proposed imaging approach. A number of numerical case studies considering a circular transducer network with eight transducers are used to identify the damages with different locations, sizes and thicknesses. The results show that the proposed methodology is able to accurately identify the damage locations with inaccuracy of the order of few millimeters of a circular inspection area of $100mm^2$ and provide a reasonable estimation of the size and depth of the damages.

Business managers are often required to use LP problems to deal with uncertainty inherent in decision making due to rapid changes in today's business environments. Uncertain parameters can be easily formulated in the two-stage stochastic LP problems. However, since solution methods are complex and time-consuming, a common approach has been to use modified formulations to provide upper and lower bounds on the two-stage stochastic LP problem. One approach is to use an expected value problem, which provides upper and lower bounds. Another approach is to use “walt-and-see” problem to provide upper and lower bounds. The objective of this paper is to propose a modified approach of “wait-and-see” problem to provide an upper bound and to compare the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds. A computing experiment is implemented to show the relative error of optimal value with various upper and lower bounds and computing times.
