This paper analyzed the effects related to the difference of the geometrical shape of the ground excavation by comparing the displacements of the earth retaining wall of the strut resulting from the change of the excavation breadth B and the excavation length L, adopting the three dimensional FDM analysis. It appeared that the displacement of the earth retaining wall of the strut increases in accordance with the increase of L/B and it decreases as it becomes nearer from the center to the comer where the temporary structural system forms, and the wale member is closured because of the effects of the confining effect by the closure of the earth retaining wall and the wale member. This paper proposed a formula in which the results of three dimensional FDM analysis which considers the shape of the excavation plane can be obtained from those of two dimentional FDM analysis which does not consider the shape of the excavation plane. And the results of the formula were compared with those of the site instrumentation analysis.

This paper describes a two-dimensional analysis of the potential distribution and electron concentration of the MODFET at channel using FDM. More exact analysis can be obtained by two-dimensional analysis which considers parasitic effects ignored in one-dimensional analysis. Using Poisson and Shrodinger equations, the potential distribution and the wave function are calculated within a constant error bound. As a result, the relations between the thickness of spacer, doping concentration of (n) AlGaAs layer, and the sheet density of the 2DEG (2 Dimensional Electron Gas) of MODFET at channel are suggested quantitively. The sheet density of the 2DEG is increased as the thickness of the spacer is decreased of the doping concentration of the (n)AlGaAs layer is lowered.

This study analyzed the output precision of 3D printing methods. The inner impeller of the centrifugal compressor was printed in as a sheet with 100% packing density using two methods: field deposition modelling and stereolithography. Dimensional differences between the initial CAD and printed models were evaluated using a 3D scanner. To investigate the dimensional characteristics of the 3D printed impeller, 3D dimension analysis and point dimension analysis were performed. The point dimension analysis was divided into 3D and 2D for comparative analysis.

The one-dimensional (1D) finite-difference method (FDM) with Abbott-Ionescu scheme and the two-dimensional (2D) finite-volume method (FVM) with an approximate Riemann solver (Osher scheme) for unsteady flow calculation in river are described. The two models have been applied to several problems including flow in a straight channel, flow in a slightly meandering channel and a flow in a meandering channel. The uniform rectangular channel was employed for the purpose of comparing results. A comparison is made between the results of computation on 1D and 2D flows including straight channel, slightly meandering channel and meandering channel application. The implementation of the finite-volume method allows complex boundary geometry represented. Agreement between FVM and FDM results regarding the discharge and stage is considered very satisfactory in straight channel application. It was concluded that a 1D analysis is sufficient if the channel is prismatic and remains straight. For curved (meandering) channels, a 2D or 3D model must be used in order to model the flow accurately.
A two-dimensional laminar flow past a vertical plate in a microchannel is investigated. At far upstream and downstream from the plate in the microchannel, the plane Poiseuille flow exists. The Stokes flow for this microchannel is investigated analytically and then the laminar flow by numerical method. For the Stokes flow analysis, the method of eigenfunction expansion is used. From the results, the streamline pattern and the pressure distribution are plotted, and the additional pressure drop induced by the plate and the force exerted on the plate are calculated as functions of the length of the plate. For the laminar flow, finite difference method (FDM) is used to obtain the vorticity and the stream function. When the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value, a pair of viscous eddies appears behind the plate.

Most of agricultural structures located in seashore could not avoid rapid deterioration of concrete because chloride-ion and $CO_2$ gradually penetrate into concrete. However, since most of models can be able to describe the phenomenon of penetration by using one or two dimensional models based on finite difference method (FDM), those modes can not simulate the real geometry and it takes a lot of computational time to complete even the calculation. To overcome those weaknesses, three dimensional numerical model considering time dependent variables such as surface concentration of chloride and diffusion coefficient of domain based on finite element method (FEM) was suggested. This model also included the neutralization occurred by the penetration of $CO_2$. Because the model used various sizes of tetrahedral mesh instead of equivalent rectangular mesh, it reduced the computational time to compare with FDM. As this model is based on FEM, it will be easily extended to execute multi-physics simulation including water evaporation and temperature change of concrete.
During solidification or welding of alloys, the solute redistribution brings out microsegregation. The microsegregation causes the formation of non-equilibrium second phases, shrinkage and porosity degrading mechanical/chemical properties Therefore, it has been required to predict microsegregation quantitatively. To predict the degree of microsegregation, more exact and appropriate computer simulation technique has been actively used during last two decades. To predict the degree of microsegregation in weld metal, an advanced two dimensional model was suggested. In the new model, both primary and secondary arm regions were defined for the analysis region. The growth in the primary arm regina was assumed to be a planar for effective calculation. Especially, for the growth of a secondary arm, a simple and effective mathematical function was established to show the growing pattern, the solute diffusion in the solid phase was calculated by finite difference method (FDM). The solid-liquid interface movement was considered to be in local equilibrium state. The experiments for welding of 310S stainless steel were carried out in order to examined the reasonability and feasibility of this model. The concentration profiles of the solute predicted by this model were compared with those obtained from experimental works.
Effect of the nonuniform grid on the two-dimensional transport equation was investigated in terms of theoretical analysis and finite difference method (FDM). The nonuniform grid having a typical structure of the numerical weather forecast model was incorporated in the vertical direction, while the uniform grid was used in the zonal direction. The staggered and non-staggered grid were placed in the vertical and zonal direction, respectively. Time stepping was performed with the third-order Runge Kutta scheme. An error analysis of the spatial discretization on the nonuniform grid was carried out, which indicated that the combined effect of the nonuniform grid and advection velocity produced either numerical diffusion or numerical adverse-diffusion. An analytic function is used for the quantitative evaluation of the errors associated with the discretized transport equation. Numerical experiments with the non-uniformity of vertical grid were found to support the analysis.

A Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) is applied to determine three-dimensional fiber orientation states in injection-molded short fiber composites. Since the CLSM optically sections the composites, more than two planes either on or below the surface of composites can be obtained. Therefore, three dimensional fiber orientation states are determined without destruction. To predict the orientation states, velocity and temperature fields are calculated by using a hybrid FEM/FDM method. The change of orientation state during packing stage is also considered by employing a compressible Hele-Shaw model. The predicted orientation states show good agreement with measured ones. However, some differences are found at the end of cavity. They may result from other effects, which are not considered in the numerical analysis.

Recently, the use of numerical simulation has been increased rapidly because of the development of high performance computer systems. The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of a two-dimensional sharp plane. Unsteady calculation by FDM(Finite Difference Method) based upon SOLA scheme which was performed at $Re=2{\times}10^4$in viscous incompressible flow within a finite domain on the irregular grid formation. Total numbers of irregular grids are $8{\times}10^4$. The minimum grid size is 1/100 of the plane length L which is the representative length. The inclined angles of every objects are $15^{\circ}, \;30^{\circ}\;and\; 45^{\circ}.$ And, the edge angle of the plane is $30^{\circ}.$ This study discussed the flow characteristics in term of the turbulent intensity, vorticity and frequency analysis. Developed flows show that the periodic Karman vortices occur at the back of the plane.
