Interdiffusion between two partially miscible polymers of similar chemical structures with different molecular weights is characterized theoretically by using the reptation model for the interdiffusion. This model provides more reliable results than the early Rouse model for same molecular weights, compared with the experiments. Furthermore, by introducing the molecular weight ratio R into the reptation model, we can see the dynamic effect of molecular weight on the diffusion behaviors of the asymmetric system. Near the critical point the diffusion behaviors of asymmetric binary polymer mixtures are well characterized by the interfacial width W(t), the mass transport M(t) for the different values of the Flory Χ parameter and different molecular weight ratios ofpolymers of the diffusion couple. These two quantities and composition profiles by this model give betteragreement with experiments.

In order to obtain some informations about the effect of molecular weight on the release rate of drug from drug carrier, two types of poly-L-glutamic acid (PLGA)-cytarabine (ara-C) conjugates, PLGA-ara-C:I and PLGA-ara-C:II, were synthesized using two types of PLGA having different average molecular weight, 43,000 and 77,800, respectively. The PLGA-ara-C conjugates were synthesized by mixed anhydride method and found to be covalently linked. Both types of conjugates charged negatively at biological pH. The pH-dependent release rate of ara-C was observed in both cases, and the release rate was accelerated in basic, acidic conditions (the k values were 0.015 $day^{-1}$ at pH 7.0, 0.024 $day^{-1}$ at pH 5.0, and 0.059 $day^{-1}$ at pH 9.0 in the case of PLGA-ara-C:I) and in the presence of pretense. The time required for the release of 16.5% of ara-C from PLGA-ara-C:I were 8 hr and 144 hr in the presence and absence of protease, respectively. Although both types of conjugates showed similar drug substitution ratio, they showed different release rates. Between the two types of conjugates, PLGA-ara-C:II showed the faster release rate (0.030 vs 0.042 $day^{-1}$ in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution at $37^{\circ}C$) and the smaller activation energy for the release of drug (12.5 vs 7.7 Kcal/mol) than PLGA-ara-C:I. The characteristic effect of molecular weight on the release rates of PLGA-ara-C conjugates suggests that the drug release rate might be effectively controlled over a prolonged period of time by the combined use of the different types of PLGA-ara-C conjugates having different molecular weights.
Sodium hyaluronate (NaHA), water soluble polymer having ultra-high molecular weight, is characterized by using on-line frit inlet asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (FI-AFlFFF) and multiangle light scattering (MALS). This study demonstrates the capability of power programming FI-AFlFFF for the separation of NaHA and the applicability of FI-AFlFFF with MALS for the characterization of molecular weight distribution and their structural information. Since sample injection and relaxation in FI-AFlFFF are achieved by using hydrodynamic relaxation, separation of high molecular weight polymers can be achieved smoothly without halting the separation flow. Experiments are carried out with the two different NaHA products (a raw NaHA sample and a thermally degraded NaHA product) and molecular weight distribution and conformations in solution are determined. Influence of sample filtration on the change of molecular weight distribution is also discussed.
As the molecular weight (MW) of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins had a great impact on their properties, this work was conducted to study effect of analytical parameters of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on the MW measurement of UF resins. GPC parameters such as flow rate, column, detector temperature, and sample injection temperature were selected to compare number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw), molecular weight distribution (MWD) and polydispersity index (PDI) of two UF resins with different viscosities. As expected, UF resin with higher viscosity resulted in greater Mn and Mw than those of low viscosity UF resin. When the flow rate increased, both Mn and Mw of UF resins decreased and MWD became narrower. By contrast, both Mn and Mw increased and MWD became wide when the column, detector, and sample injection temperature increased. The column, detector, and sample injection temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ at a flow rate of $0.5m{\ell}/min$ resulted in the highest MW and broadest MWD for the GPC analysis. These results suggest that the apparent molecular size or a hydrodynamic radius of UF resin molecules dissolved in the mobile phase affect to Mn, Mw and MWD.
An equivalent retention has been experimentally observed in thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) for different polymer-solvent systems. It is shown that iso-retention between two sets of polymer-solvent systems can be obtained by adjusting the temperature difference (ΔT) according to the difference in the ratio of ordinary diffusion coefficient to thermal diffusion coefficient. This method uses a compensation of field strength (ΔT) in ThFFF at a fixed condition of cold wall temperature. It is applied for the calculation of molecular weight of polymers based on a calibration run of different standards obtained at an adjusted AT. The polymer standards used in this study are polystyrene (PS), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). Three carrier solvents, tetrahydrofuran (THF), methylethylketone (MEK) and ethylacetate (ETAc) were employed. Though the accuracy in the calculation of molecular weight is dependent on the difference in the slope of log λ vs. log M which is related to Mark-Houwink constant a, it shows reasonable agreement within about 6% of relative error in molecular weight calculation for the polymer-solvent systems having similar a value.
This study reports the performance of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins prepared at two different low formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios with different numbers of urea addition during synthesis. The second or third urea was added during the synthesis of UF resins to obtain two different low molar ratios of 0.7 and 1.0, respectively. The molecular weights, cure kinetics, and adhesion performance of these resins were characterized by the gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile shear strength of plywood, respectively. When the number of urea additions and F/U molar ratio increased, the gelation time decreased, whereas the viscosity and molecular weight increased. Further, the UF resins prepared with the second urea and 1.0 molar ratio resulted in greater activation energy than those with third urea and 0.7 molar ratio. Tensile shear strength and formaldehyde emission (FE) of the plywood that bonded with these resins increased when the number of urea additions and molar ratio increased. These results suggest that the UF resins prepared with 0.7 molar ratio and third urea addition provide lower adhesion performance and FE than those resins with 1.0 mole ratio and the second urea addition.

Two different extracellular lipases were produced by an anaerobic bacterium, Selenomonas lipolytica. A major lipase, lipase I, was isolated, which showed optimum activity at pH 6.0 and at $45^{\circ}C$. It showed a molecular weight of 240 kDa and was a tetramer of a subunit having molecular weight of 60 kDa, which is different from the known bacterial lipases.
Copolymers with two different side groups, 2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy and p-chlorophenoxy groups, have been synthesized by reaction of poly(dichlorophosphazene) with their sodium salts, and characterized by elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, IR and NMR spectroscopies. The molecular weight measurement has shown that the weight average molecular weight, ${\bar{M}}_w$ of the copolymers are all above $10^6$ and their molecular weight distributions are monomodal and narrow (${\bar{M}}_w/{\bar{M}}_n<4$). Thermal properties of these copolymers measured by DSC and TGA exhibited to be intermediate between those of the two corresponding homopolymers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of lignin fractionated from waste wood (WW) using a two-step process of ethanol organosolv pretreatment followed by ultrafiltration with membranes of different molecular weight cut-offs (1, 5 and 20 kDa). The different permeates obtained were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The analysis by FT-IR and NMR of these lignins showed that the lignin core was successfully separated from WW. TGA curves confirmed that the thermal properties of lignin fractionated by ultrafiltration were almost identical to each other. The results from GPC confirmed that fractionating of lignin was achieved by ultrafiltration. For the membrane fractionation process, values of molecular weight decreased as the cut-offs used to obtain the fractions became smaller. As a result, fractionating lignin by a two-step process allowed separating different fractions of lignin of different molecular weights yielded high purity without interference from existing pollutants in WW. The two-step process offers the possibility of using fractionated WW as an untapped source of lignin.
Each of the two polycarbonates (PC) of different molecular weights was blended with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) under high-shear rate processing to afford PC/ABS. Sizes of ABS dispersed phases and mechanical properties of PC/ABS blends were investigated and high-shear rate processing of PC/ABS was carried out by changing screw speed and processing time. Prepared specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe morphology changes. Sizes of ABS dispersed phases in PC/ABS blends were observed to decrease gradually as screw speeds increased. Tensile strengths and elongations of specimens were investigated by universal testing method (UTM) to study the influence of molecular weight of PC exerting on PC/ABS blends. As a result, PC1/ABS blends (PC1: higher molecular weight PC) exhibited more strengthened properties than PC2/ABS (PC2: lower molecular weight PC). The tensile strength of PC1/ABS showed an increasing tendency when the screw speed increased, and the elongation did not show a significant decrease, but increased slightly with increasing shear time at a constant screw speed of 1000 rpm.
