In the present study, we propose a virtual boundary method for simulation of massive inextensible flexible strings immersed in viscous fluid flow. The fluid motion is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations and a momentum forcing is added in order to bring the fluid to move at the same velocity with the immersed surface. A massive inextensible flexible string model is described by another set of equations with an additional momentum forcing which is a result of the fluid viscosity and the pressure difference across the string. The momentum forcing is calculated by a feedback loop. Simulations of several numerical examples are carried out, inlcuding a hanging string which starts moving under gravity without ambient fluid, a string swimming within a uniform flow and a uniform flow over two side-by side strings. The numerical results agree well with the theoretical analysis and previous experimental observations. Preliminary results of a swimming elongated fishlike body will also be presented.

Leakage characteristics of two labyrinth seals with different configurations (straight vs stepped) were investigated. Leakage flows were predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the two configurations and compared with test data. A semi-analytical leakage prediction tool was also tried to predict the leakage. It was confirmed that the CFD gives quite good agreements with test data. The analytical tool also yielded similar leakage behaviors with test results, but the overall agreement with test data was not as good as that of the CFD. The effect of flow direction in the stepped seal on leakage flow was examined. The dependence of leakage performance, in terms of flow function, on the seal clearance size was investigated. Flow function decreased with decreasing clearance in the straight seal, while the trend was reversed in the stepped seal.
This paper presents the development of a two-dimensional model for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard k-$\epsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermofluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.
An experimental study is carried out to study two-phase vertically upward hydraulic transport of solid particles by water in a vertical and inclined (0${\sim}$60 degree) concentric annulus with rotation of the inner cylinder. Rheology of particulate suspensions in shear-thinning fluids is of importance in many applications such as particle removal from surfaces, transport of proppants in fractured reservoir and cleaning of drilling holes, and so on. Annular fluid velocities varied from 0.2 m/s to 1.5 m/s for the actual drilling operational condition. Macroscopic behavior of solid particles, averaged flow rate, and particle rising velocity are observed. Main parameters considered in this study were radius ratio, inner-pipe rotary speed, fluid flow regime, and particle injection rate. For both water and CMC solutions, the higher the concentration of the solid particles is, the larger the pressure gradients become
The moment-of-fluid (MOF) method is a new volume-tracking method that accurately treats evolving material interfaces. Based on the moment data (volume and centroid) for each material, the material interfaces are reconstructed with second-order spatial accuracy in a strictly conservative manner. The MOF method is coupled with a stabilized finite element incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for two fluids, namely water and air. The effectiveness of the MOF method is demonstrated with a free-surface dam-break problem.

The transient shear stress response of an electrorheological fluid is investigated experimentally. The characteristic time constants of an electrorheological fluid sheared between two concentric cylinders were obtained under various electric field strengths and shear rates. Also, two experimental modes are adopted to investigate the effect of the shear flow on the dynamic behavior of the fluid; one is that the electric field is induced before shearing, and the other is the electric field is induced after shearing. From the difference in the response time between two modes, the cluster formation time were obtained. The response times were decreased with the increase of the shear rate, irrelatively of the electric field strength. The cluster formation time were monotonically increased with increase of shear rate, and thereafter, were converged with a certain value.
In a laboratory model the response of the boundary layer flow over topography is studied in a rotating sliced cylinder by employing the source-sink analogy with Ekman layer dynamics. The boundary layer flow is produced by two different fluid. In the first experiment homogeneous fluid is used both for the source and the working fluid of the container. In the second experiment a denser fluid is used for the source with the same working fluid. For the homogeneous western boundary layer flow both the northward and the southward flow were affected by the topography(ridge) to produce a cyclonic motion near the ridge. When woughward moving heavy boundary flow of slower speed and the northward moving faster flow were present at the same time, the splitting of southward flow and the separating of the northward flow were observed with a cyclonic motion at the ridge. The most important factor that influence production of the cyclonic motion has been turned out to be the presence of the topography in the western boundary layer. In particular the role of the southward moving heavy flow over the interior flow pattern was found to be very significant.
Microbubble technology has been widely applied in various industrial fields. Recently, research on many types of microbubble application technology has been conducted experimentally, but there is a limit in deriving the optimal design and operating conditions. Therefore, if the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of multiphase flow is used to supplement these experimental studies, it is expected that the time and cost required for prototype production and evaluation tests will be minimized and optimal results will be derived. However, few studies have been conducted on multiphase flow CFD analysis to interpret fluid flow in microbubble generators using swirl flow. In this study, CFD simulation of multiphase flow was performed to analyze the air-water mixing process and fluid flow characteristics in a microbubble generator with a dual-chamber structure. Based on the simulation results, it was confirmed that a negative pressure was formed on the central axis of rotation due to the strong swirling flow. And it could be seen that the air inside the suction tube was introduced into the inner chamber of the microbubble generator. In addition, as the high-speed mixed fluid collided with external water sucked by the negative pressure near the outlet, a large amount of microbubbles was ejected due to the shear force between the two flows flowing in opposite directions.
A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.
