  • In this paper, we analyzed the EMP coupling for the nonuniform transmission lines, such as twisted cables, using the chain matrix algorithm and the multi-conductor analysis. The BLT method is widely used for the EMP coupling analysis of the transmission line, however, it is difficult to apply to the nonuniform transmission lines. In order to analyze the EMP coupling of nonuniform transmission lines, the whole nonuniform transmission line is divided into incremental uniform line sections of the finite numbers, and the coupling in each small sections is now summed up to get the EMP coupling effect of the entire nonuniform transmission line. To verify the proposed EMP coupling analysis method, the result of the EMP coupling simulation is compared with the solution of BLT equations for a uniform transmission line case. The proposed method is applied to the twisted cable over ground in case of being illuminated by the HEMP in order to analyze the EMP coupling.

  • In the current paper, we propose a new modeling algorithm to analyze the coupling between an incident electromagnetic field (EMF) and a twisted conducting line, which is a kind of non-uniform line. Typically, analysis of external field coupling to a uniform transmission line (TL) is implemented by the Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equation so that the induced load responses can be obtained. However, it is difficult to apply this method to the analysis of a twisted conducting line. To overcome this limitation, we used a chain matrix composed of ABCD parameters. The proposed algorithm expands the dimension of the previous chain matrix to consider the EMF coupling effectiveness of each twisted pair, which is then applied to multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) theory. In addition, we included a comparative study that involves the results of each method applied in the conventional BLT equation and new proposed algorithm in the uniform two-wire TL case to verify the proposed method.

  • Differential signaling has become a popular choice for high-speed interconnection schemes on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), offering superior immunity to external noise. However, conventional differential transmission lines on PCBs have problems, such as crosstalk and radiated emission. To overcome these, we propose a Twisted Differential Line (TDL) structure on a multi-layer PCB. Its improved immunity to crosstalk noise and the reduced radiated emission has been successfully demonstrated by measurement. The proposed structure is proven to transmit 3 Gbps digital signals with a clear eye-pattern. Furthermore, it is subject to much less crosstalk noise and achieves a 13 dB suppression of radiated emission. • In this paper, a numerical method for analyzing coupling between high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) as external field and a shielded twisted pair (STP) cable is proposed, which is based on an expanded chain matrix. Load responses of electromagnetic (EM) field excitation in uniform transmission line (TL) are solved by Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equations in frequency domain, however, it is difficult to apply BLT equations to solve load responses of STP cable because the iteratively changing configuration of each twisted pairs are involved in cable. To avoid this problem and decrease memory and CPU time, we proposed the expanded chain matrix modeling method that is calculated using ABCD parameters, and applied multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) theory to consider the EMP coupling effectiveness of each twisted pairs. The results implemented by the proposed method are presented and compared with those obtained by the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method as a kind of 3D full wave analysis.

  • A twisted inverted-F antenna(TIFA) is proposed for a dual-band application. The TIFA features a twisted line for dual bands and a parasitic line for additional resonance. The proposed antenna has wideband characteristics at the high frequency band due to the merge of the resonances of the twisted line and the parasitic line. The electric size of the antenna is $0.109{\lambda}{\times}0.025{\lambda}{\times}0.0025{\lambda}$, whose length is about 44% of that of a conventional inverted-F antenna. The fabricated antenna on a thin FR4 substrate was measured to operate at 960 MHz with a bandwidth of 47 MHz, and at 1.8 GHz with a bandwidth of 289 MHz for $S_{11}$ less than -5 dB; the radiation efficiencies were 49% and 57%, respectively.

  • We have studied the pressure-dependent liquid crystal's dynamics in a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal panel with thin film transistor by applying an external pressure to it. When the external pressure is applied to the panel in a dark state, the disclination lines were generated as a light leakage whereas they did not appear in a simple test cell that has only pixel and common electrodes. It was because the disclination lines were Provoked by the electric field between pixel electrode and data/gate bus line for active matrix driving. Consequently, the external pressure resulted in dynamic instability of the liquid crystal so that the disclination lines at the data/gate bus line intruded into the active area.

  • The twisting and bending extrusion process is developed by the $DEFORM^TM$-3D. Because the rectangular section of the extruded product has the symmetry line of cross-section area, the twisting and the bending of extruded product has not occurred. The product with the rectangular section is applied to the twisting and bending extrusion process through the twisted die surface and eccentricity die section. It is shown that the twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted die surfaces and the bending of extruded product is causd by the eccentricity between the die section. The results by the analysis show that the twisting angle and the curvature of extruded products increases by the die twisting angle, the eccentricity, but decreases by the die length, and friction condition

  • Applications of commercial software DEFORM-3DTM for 3-D simulation in extrusion process are developed for the analysis of twisting of extruded products. Because the elliptical shape has at least one line symmetry, the twisting is not occured during the extrusion. But, the results of extrusion simulation of the elliptical shape show that the twisted boundary of the die surface makes the material inside die surface rotate with the constant angular velocity. Otherwise, the simulation results of the S shaped product show that the twisting can be occured by the only 180$^{\circ}$rotation symmetry of S shape without no line symmetry and show that the angular velocity increases by the only 180$^{\circ}$rotation symmetry without no twisted die surface between on the die entrance section and on the die exit section. The results of the analysis show that the angular velocity of the extruded product changes with die length and friction condition.
