A spectrophotometric and first derivative spectrophotometric method was developed in aquatic Tween 80 micellar solutions for selective determination of nickel without using any pre-separation step. 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN), as a sensitive chromogenic complexing agent formed a red-colored Ni(II)-PAN complex in Tween 80 media with satisfactory solubility and stability. Conditions such as pH, PAN concentration, type and concentration of micellizing agent were optimized. Molar absorptivity of Ni-PAN complex was found $4.62\;{\times}\;10^4L\;cm^{?1}\;mol^{?1}$ at 569 nm, under the optimum condition. Calibration graphs were derived by zero, first and second derivative spectrophotometry at maximum wavelengths of 569, 578 and 571 nm with linear ranges of 30-1800, 20-2500 and 30-2000 ng $mL^{?1}$ , respectively. Precision as standard deviation as well as accuracy as recovery percent were in the range of 1-20 ng $mL^{?1}$, and 93.3-103.3%, respectively, for the entire of the linear ranges. Spectrophotometric detection limit was 3 ng $mL^{?1}$ and effects of diverse ions on the first derivative determination of nickel were studied to investigate selectivity of the method. Interferences of cobalt and copper on the nickel determination were prevented using o-phenanthroline as masking agent. The recommended procedures were applied to the various synthetic and stainless steel alloys, tea leaves and human hair, with satisfactory results.

Petroleum hydrocarbons pollutants, such as diesel fuel, have caused ecosystem damage in terrestrial and aquatic habitats. They have been recognized as one of the most hazardous wastes. This study was designed to optimize the effect of Tween 80 concentration, nitrogen (N)/phosphorus (P) ratio and salinity level on diesel biodegradation by Vibrio alginolyticus (V. alginolyticus). Response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was selected with three factors of Tween 80 concentration (0, 5, 10 mg/L), N/P ratio (5, 10, 15) and salinity level (15‰, 17.5‰, 20‰) as independent variables. The percentage of diesel degradation was a dependent variable for 14 d of the remediation period. The results showed that the percentages of diesel degradation generally increased with an increase in the amount of Tween 80 concentration, N/P ratio and salinity level, respectively. The optimization condition for diesel degradation by V. alginolyticus occurred at 9.33 mg/L of Tween 80, 9.04 of N/P ratio and 19.47‰ of salinity level, respectively, with percentages of diesel degradation at 98.20%. The statistical analyses of the experimental results and model predictions ($R^2=0.9936$) showed the reliability of the regression model and indicated that the addition of biostimulant can enhance the percentage of diesel biodegradation.
Enantioselective hydrolysis for the producing chiral epichlorohydrin from its racemic substrate was investigated using epoxide hydrolase activity of Rhodosporidium toruloides SJ-4. The effects of reaction parameters including pH, temperature, initial substrate concentration on initial hydrolysis rate and enantioselectivity were analyzed and optimized. The addition of detergent, Tween 20, enhanced the hydrolysis rate and enantioselectivity. Chiral (R)-epichlorohydrin with high optical purity (>99% ee) and yield of 25% (theoretically 50% maximum yield) was obtained from its racemate of 20 mM.
The effects of nonionic surfactant solutions of 0.1g/dL on detergency and liquid wetting/retention properties of soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth were studied. Soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth (EMPA 104) and 10 different nonionic surfactants (Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85) were used in the study. The water retention and liquid retention capacity values of soiled cloth were decreased compared with those of unsoiled cloth. The wetting and water retention of soiled cloth improved with addition of surfactants, whereas water retention ratio(W/H) values didnot change markedly. Generally surfactants with low surface tension and high HLB (Hydrophile-lipophile balance) were more effective in improving the wetting/retention properties of soiled cloth. Nonionic surfactants having high ethylene oxide contents of 20 moles; i.e., Tween 20, 40, 60 & 80, showed better detergency than low ethylene oxide contents of 4 moles; i.e., Tween 21, 61 & 81. As HLB values of surfactants and $cos{\theta}$ of the soiled cloth increase, the detergency values of soiled cloth increased.
Self-Emulsifying System(SES), an isotropic mixture of oil and surfactant which forms oil-in-water emulsion, is expected to improve in vitro drug dissolution and enhance in vivo drug absorption. A poorly water soluble drug, ibu-profen(IBP) was incorporated into the SES to improve absorption, and enhance bioavailability of drug. Medium chain triglyceride, glyceryl tricaprylate(GTC) as an oil, and Tween 85 as a surfactant were used to formulate SES. To characterize SESs with various concentrations of Tween 85, the phase separation and solubility of IBP-SEDDS containing IBP as a function of Tween 85 concentration were conducted, and the particle size was measured using photon correlation spectroscopic method. The SES with optimal concentration of Tween 85(35%(w/w)) was selected based on its high drug loading, small particle size and low surfactant concentration. After an oral administration of IBP-SEDDS and IBP suspension in methyl cellulose equivalent to 40.0 mg/kg to rats, the pharmacokinetic parameters were compared. The $C_{max}(163.17\;vs\;88.82\;{\mu}g/ml)$, $AUC(12897.01\;vs\;8751.13\;{\mu}g\;min/ml)$ and Bioavailability(86.44 vs 58.65%) significantly increased but $T_max(10\;vs\;20\;min)$ was significantly advanced. The current SEDDS containing IBP provide an alternative to improve an oral bio-availability of IBP.
Food nanoemulsion systems consisting of water and oleoresin capsicum (OC), polyoxythylene sorbitan esters (Tween 20, 40, 60, and 80), propylene glycol (PG), sucrose monostearate (SM), and their corresponding mixtures were formulated to use as food vehicles. Tween 80 produced OC nanoemulsions with stable dispersions as one-phase systems, and the dertermined emulsification efficiencies clearly distinguished the ability of the various surfactants to emulsify OC. The nanoemulsions were prepared by both ultrasonication and self-assembly, and the nanoemulsion areas were determined using phase diagrams by measuring the sizes of the emulsions. One-phase nanoemulsions were presented, with a multiple cloudy region and phase separation that were dependent on the particle size of the emulsion. The OC nanoemulsions prepared by ultrasonication using systems of OC/Tween 80/water, OC/Tween 80/water+PG, and OC/Tween 80/water+SM, resulted in particle sizes ranging from 15 to 100 nm. Finally, the nanoemulsions maintained their initial sizes during storage, ranging from 65 to 92 nm.

Super hydrophilic and high transparent $TiO_2$ thin films were successfully fabricated by sol-gel method without an irradiation of UV light. In addition, surfactant Tween 80 was used for increasing the transmittance of the thin films. When the contents of Tween 80 in $TiO_2$ solution were 0.0, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 wt%, the transmittance of $TiO_2$ thin films was ca. 74.31%, 74.25%, 79.69%, 81.99% at 550 nm wavelength, respectively. The contact angles of fabricated $TiO_2$ thin films with or without Tween 80 were from ca. $4.0^{\circ}$ to $4.5^{\circ}$. The $TiO_2$ thin films annealed over $400^{\circ}C$ showed anatase crystal structure and the photocatalytic property that decomposed methyl orange with UV irradiation. The surface morphologies, optical properties and contact angle of prepared thin films with different contents of Tween 80 were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffratometer (XRD), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and contact angle meter.
Effects of soluble silicon and surfactants on the development of powdery mildew of cucumber were tested for environmentally safe powdery mildew control. Tested soluble silicon was potassium silicate$(K_2SiO_3)$ and tested commercial surfactants were Jeonchakje, Silhouette, Kaba, and Tween 20. Tested concentrations were 2, 4, 8, 16mM for the soluble silicon, 0.5 and 1.0% for Tween 20, 0.05 and 0.1% for both Jeonchakje and Kaba, and 0.03 and 0.07% for Silhouette. Water dilutions of tested materials were sprayed on cucumber (Cucumis sativus) leaves once a week for 4 weeks. From 3 days after the second spray, the diseased area and the numbers of fungal colony were measured from the treated leaves for 6 times at 3-4 days interval. Powdery mildew was less severe on treated cucumber compared to distilled water-treated cucumber (check). In all treatments, diseased area index was proportional to the number of the fungal colony. At the end of investigation, there was severe powdery mildew on check cucumbers. Average 30% of a leaf was colonized by powdery mildew fungus and the average number of the fungal colony per leaf reached to more than 70. On the other hand, none of the treated cucumber suffered severe powdery mildew. The treatments including 8 and 16mM of soluble silicon, doubled concentration of Kaba, and 0.5 and 1.0% of Tween 20 showed more than 80% of control effect compared to water-treated cucumber. In addition, no phytotoxicity was found. Potassium silicate and Tween 20 showed the possibility to replace chemical pesticides for the control of powdery mildew.
The purpose of the present study was to formulate the aqueous solution of 1-cyclopent-3-enylmethyl-6(3,5-dimethyl-benzoyl)-5-ethyl-1H-pyrimidine-2,4-dione (CPD), a novel antivirus compound containing pirimidine structure. For this purpose, the effects of various solubilization agents such as cosolvents [ethanol, propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol 300 (PEG 300), polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), glycerin], surfactants (Tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ EL, Poloxamer 407, Poloxamer 188) and a complexation agent [hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (HPBCD)] , on the solubility of CPD in aqueous solution were evaluated. The solubility of CPD in water was under $1\;{\mu}g/ml$ at $20^{\circ}C$. Cosolvents such as ethanol, PG, PEG 300, PEG 400 and glycerin did not enhance the solubility of CPD at the $0{\sim}40\%$ concentration range. The solubility of CPD was significantly elevated by the addition of cosolvents over the $80\%$ concentration range. On the other hand, tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ L, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40, and HPBCD showed enhanced effects on the solubility of CPD. The enhanced effects of Poloxamer 407 or Poloxamer 188 on the CPD solubility were less pronounced compared with tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ L or Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40. As a results, tween 80 aqueous solution was selected as an optimum solvent system. The aqueous solutions containing $20\%$ tween 80 were formulated as a dosing solution containing CPD for its intraperitoneal and intrahypodermic administration, respectively, The formular showed physical stability after stored for 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$.
Throughout the studies the following experimental results were obtained and summarized. 1. Treatment of MVE virus with acetone, Tween-ether and Tween-ether-protamine sulphate caused an eight to 16 fold increase in HA activity. 2. Treatment with acetone and Tween-ether resulted in a four fold increase in CF activity. Treatment with Tween-ether-protamine sulphate decreased the activity. 3. The crude virus showed a complete loss of infectivity after treatment with Tween-ether, but three log unit was, decreased with acetone treatment. 4. The HA activity of treated and crude virus was disappeared after heating at $37^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes but CF activity was increased. 5. Tween-ether or acetone treatment equally applicable to the preparation of haemagglutinin for HI test. 6. Zonal centrifugation of crude virus in a linear ten to 60 percent sucrose gradient showed two peaks of CF activity, and one of high buoy ant density part accompanied by HA activity and infectivity and the other of lower density part. Acetone treatment brought a decrease of the high density CF activity but not affected the second peak of low density found with crude virus, and resulted in increased HA activity and decreased infectivity. The peaks of HA, CF and infectivity after acetone treatment were not clearly separated. Tween-ether treatment caused a loss of the peak of CF activity found in the area of high density with crude virus, but the peak in the area of low density was not affected. This peak of CF activity was separated from noninfectious HA activity. The HA and CF activities were considered to be contributed by different parts of the varion.
