  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in FCD500 ductile cast iron turning with different cutting tools, tungsten-carbide and CBN. Mechanical property, cutting characteristics and the application to the real industrial area is the final purpose. FDC500 ductile cast iron is now widely used in the various commercial vehicle parts for increased machine abilities which accrue more tensile strength with lower hardness. Several studies have been fulfilled for the material and heat-treatment area, but few with the cutting characteristics and wear behavior in the turning area.

  • In this study, a durability estimation system of turning centers is developed to systematically evaluate the effects of structural specification and testing condition on the durability. All loads such as weights, inertia forces, cutting force and so on, are automatically transferred from the upper elements to the lower elements by the force flow which can be derived from the structural code of turning center. And the external loads applying to the moving and rolling elements are determined by using the equilibrium conditions of force and moment. Especially, the durability of turning center is estimated based on the lifes of moving and rolling elements under the required testing condition.

Maneuvering character of hull form renovated tuna purse seiner (선형개조 선망선의 조종성능)

  • In an attempt to improve the maneuvering character of hull form renovated tuna purse seiner. A renovation was carried out on the 3 tuna purse seiner fishing vessel. To grasp the progress of maneuvering and resistance on ship B (730 ton class), new bulbous bow was only attached. The ship A (740 ton class) and C (600 ton class) were modified for new bulbous bow, enlarged slipway and rudder. And then the zigzag and the turning test were carried out. According to the turning test, the advance and the tactical diameter were improved very much for the modified ship. The sea trial was carried out for the original and modified ship A. It is showed that the results of sea trial corresponded with that of the tank test on the whole. In the result of the zigzag test on ship B, the turning ability was improved very much, but the yaw checking ability was deteriorated in just some degree. In the result of the zigzag test on ship C, the turning ability and yaw checking ability were remarkably improved. Ship C was greatly improved among the three ships for the maneuvering character of modified hull form.

In-process calibration system suitable for unattended turning cells (자동 선삭 셀에 적합한 인프로세스 측정/ 검사 시스템)

  • In a transfer line with mass production capability, calibration systems are included in the process as a separate dedicated station. However, this method is not appropriate in an unattended FMC with flexibility. As the FMC produces vesatile parts with small batch sizes, more flexible calibration systems are required. In this paper, a calibration/inspection system suitable for an unattended turning cell is introduced. The system has functions of dimension calibration of parts by touch probes, tool wear compensation, and quality monitoring of parts. Furthermore, characteristics of errors in the system are identified and corresponding compensation methodology is suggested. An operation software was developed for efficient use of the system.

  • In case of hard turning, tool wear is acclerated by heat. So we intend to decrease tool wear by using an air-jet cooling system. Before constructing the air-jet cooling system, no chipping conditions were selected through a statistical method, so called 'Taguchi method', and then the air-jet cooling system was developed by synthesizing and analyzing the results of experimental data through Taguchi method. The air-jet cooling system actually reduced flank wear of TiN coated tool by 25%.

  • This paper presents the influence of the process parameters on the change in dynamic behavior of a lathe turning system. With variation of feed rate, depth of cut, direction of tool motion, cutting speed and tool location along the workpiece, the dynamic characteristics of stable cutting, chatter transition and fully developed chatter regions are demonstrated. The workpiece vibration during machining is continuously measured at different tool locations along the workpiece and quantitatively analyzed. Complex linear behavior due to change of process parameter values as well as fundamental wystem nonlinearity due to change of process configuration indicated by a tool path dependence of the locations of chatter onset and disappearance are described. Finally, the structural characteristics of the turning system which can have large and nonlinear effects on system behavior are presented.

  • This paper concerns the development of NC programming system TIG (Turning with Interactive Graphics) with interactive graphics for turning operation. The system cosists of the processor, the post-processor and the system-user interface. Different from previous segment contour based NC graphic programming systems, the frliability and efficiencyof programming is realized by using Boolean operation with block unit based ICONs for the geometry definition. The tool motion can be also displayed on the screen together with the part contour. The system calculate automatically the number of passes based on the user specified cutting conditions.

  • The feasibility of generating controller surface topographies in single-point conventional turning operations is investigated. First, a mathematical model of the surface generation process was developed. Second, in order to control the texture of the machined surface, a micro-positioning stage and the associated command generation software were designed and built. Experimental examples have shown that surface texture can be precisely controlled and is in good agrement with the theoretical predictions.

  • In order to make unmanned machining systems with satisfactory performances, it is necessary to incorporate appropriate condition monitoring systems in the machining workstation to provide the required intelligence of the expert. This paper deals with condition monitoring for tool wear and fracture during turning operation. Developing economic sensing and identification methods for turning processes, sound pressure measurement and digital signal processing technique are proposed. The validity of the proposed system is confirmed through the large number of cutting tests.
