  • Standard Gate Turn Off (GTO) Thyristor drive technology results in inhomogeneous turn-on and turn-off transients which in turn needs costly dv/dt and di/dt snubber circuits. Added to this GTO is bulky in size, needs external cooling, slower switching time etc. The development of high voltage Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) have given new device advantage in the areas where they compete with conventional GTO technology. Indian Railway has developed first IGBT based traction converter and was commissioned in November 2006. Some of the supremacy of IGBT are smaller in size, no external cooling is required, built in power supply which enhances reliability, lower switching losses which leads to higher efficiency, reduced gate drive, high frequency operation in real time etc. These advantages are highlighted along with IGBT Traction system in operation.

  • In order to increase the power density of power converters, reduction of the switching losses at high-frequency switching conditions is one of the most important issues. This paper presents a new gate drive circuit that enables the reduction of switching losses in both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT. A distinctive feature of this method is that both the turn-on loss and the turn-off loss are decreased simultaneously without using a conventional ZVS circuit, such as the quasi-resonant adjunctive circuit. Experimental results of the switching loss of both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT are shown. In addition, an energy recovery circuit suitable for use in IGBTs that can be realized by modifying the proposed gate drive circuit is also proposed. The effectiveness of both the proposed circuits was confirmed experimentally by the buck-chopper circuit.

  • In this paper, the inverter switch losses of BLDC motor for three types of PWM methods and power devices were analyzed. When the BLDC motor is driven at low currents, the inverter switch losses for MOSFET are low because MOSFET operates like resistance. However, the inverter switch losses for IGBT are higher than MOSFET due to its large turn-off losses. Moreover, synchronous rectification switching method is adaptable because MOSFET has 2-channel. So, MOSFET can be driven with more low impedance and losses. For low power inverter with MOSFET, the power losses of unified PWM are lower than that of unipolar and bipolar PWM. Proposed method and losses analysis results are verified by examination and simulation using Matlab/Simulink.

  • This paper introduces a novel ZVS interleaved totem-pole PFC with the reduced circulating current and the reverse recovery current of the diodes. With the help of a simple auxiliary inductor, both ZVS turn-on of the main switches and soft turn-off of the body diodes can be achieved. In the proposed totem-pole PFC topology since the switching losses and the reverse recovery losses can be significantly reduced, the typical Si MOSFETs can be employed. In addition the circulating current is reduced by adjusting the switching frequency. The proposed PFC topology can be a low cost solution to achieve high efficiency in high power PFC applications. The validity and the feasibility of the proposed topology is verified by the experimental results with a 3.3kW interleaved totem-pole PFC converter.

  • This paper presents novel circuit topology of half-bridge soft-switching PWM inverter type DC-DC high power converter for DC bus feeding power plants. The proposed DC-DC power converter is composed of a typical voltage source-fed, half-bridge high frequency PWM inverter with a high frequency planar transformer link PWM control scheme and parallel capacitive lossless snubbers. The operating principle of the new DC-DC converter treated here is described by using switching mode-equivalent circuits, together with its unique features. All the active power switches in the half-bridge arms and input DC bus lines can achieve ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation transitions. The total turn-off switching losses of the power switches can be significantly reduced. As a result, high switching frequency IGBTs can actually be selected in the frequency range of 40[kHz] under the principle of soft-switching. The performance evaluations of the experimental setup are illustrated practically.

  • A novel lossless passive snubber is proposed for soft switching the boost type converters. The proposed snubber does not use any auxiliary switches. but uses two identical snubber capacitors which are charged in parallel at turn off of the main switch and discharged in series at turn on automatically, and the discharged energy is recovered effectively (more than $95[\%]$ recovery) into the output capacitor. Thus, the snubber provides zero voltage switching for the converter main switch, reducing both the turn off losses and the electromagnetic interference(EMI) noise, whitch improves the converter performance. The experimental results of a 20[kHz] 600[W] DC-DC boost converter and a single-phase AC-DC boost rectifier with the new snubber are presented.

  • This paper presents analysis of losses of switching device for full bridge inverter connected to grid. The losses are a dominant factor that judges efficiency of the system. The losses of switching device are divided to switching loss and conduction loss. They are can be estimated by analyzing periodic switching waveforms. The switching loss is generated at the point that turn-on and off. And the conduction loss is generated while the switch is on condition. The estimated losses of switch are compared to simulation result in this paper.

  • A Novel Zero Current Switching(ZCS) Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) boost converter for reducing two rectifiers reverse recovery related losses Is proposed. The switches of the proposed converter are operating to work alternatively turn-on and turn-off with soft switching(ZVS, ZCS) condition. The reverse recovery related switching losses and EMI problems of the proposed converter eliminates the reverse recovery current of the freewheeling diode(D, Dl) by adding the resonant inductor Lr, in series with the switch S2. The voltage and current stresses of the components are similar to those in its conventional hard switching counterpats. As mentioned above, the characteristics are verified through experimental results.

  • This paper introduces a ZC-ZVS PWM(Pulse-Width -Modulation) boost converter. The IGBT(main switch) of the proposed converter is always switched at ZCS and soft switching of MOSFET(auxiliary switch) as well. Therefore, the proposed converter minimized the turn on/turn off switching losses of switches and reduced conduction losses by using IGBT switch. Moreover, using paralleled IGBT-MOSFET switch overcame the switching frequency limitation. Therefore high power density system can be realized. As mentioned above, the characteristics are verified through experimental results.
