USGA green specification is currently accepted in construction method of Korea. This study was carried out to find the factors influencing growth of turfgrass associated with soil physical properties of soil root-zone on golf green constructed with USGA method. Three putting greens in poor turfgrass and one in good turfgrass condition were selected for investigation on one golf course site at mid-South Korean peninsula. Soil hardness, moisture content, root length, and turf density were measured on-site greens, and soil physical properties and soil chemical properties also analyzed in laboratory. As a result of on-site surveys and soil physical tests in laboratory, soil physical properties were most important factors which influenced on turfgrass growth at tested greens. The results of soil particle analysis on green No. 2, in good turf condition, matched USGA sand particle recommendations. But those greens such as Nos. 1, 11 and 16, in poor putting greens, showed high soil compaction and improper soil particle distribution. Those factors created low leaf density, poor root depth, and higher moisture content compared with lower part of topsoil. Such phenomena caused inadequate turfgrass growth with soil hardening associated with poor drainage. Therefore, declines of soil physical properties associated with improper particle distribution caused a major factor influencing on turfgrass growth in golf green. Adequate test of soil particle analysis by USGA specification and proper construction method followed by adequate turf maintenance should be performed to obtain optimal turf quality on putting green.
As SCB liquid fertilizer (SCB) produced from or out of livestock manure by slurry composting and biofiltration process was applied in golf course, the effect on soil properties and water quality was little investigated. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the SCB liquid fertilizer application on environment by monitoring chemical property of soil and water quality of pond as applied chemical fertilizer (CF) and SCB. SCB application rarely contaminated the soil and pond in golf course and decreased organic matter, CEC and Ca in soil and pH and T-N for water quality of pond. In correlation coefficient between soil property parameters, water quality parameters and water quality items, SCB applied in golf course decreased organic matter and CEC in soil and increased SAR in water quality (P<0.01). Nitrogen applied in golf course with SCB or CF was significantly related to T-N in the soil (P<0.01), but not significantly related to T-N in the pond water. These results showed that SCB application little contaminated soil and pond in golf course, and was expected to control of thatch in soil and algae in pond.
This study was conducted to provide basic understandings for proper management of zoysiagrass fairways. Mowing intervals of 2, 4 and 6-days, with and without aeration were compared at two fertility levels. Turfgrass quality, growth and pest infestation were evaluated. Turf density, number of tillers, leaf width and resiliency were significantly affected by mowing frequency. Turfgrass plots mowed every 2-day had greater density, tillering, and resiliency but had narrower leaf width compared to other mowing treatments. Clipping dry weight with every 2-day mowing increased in the early stage of mowing treatment regardless of fertilizer application rates but gradually decreased in the later stage of mowing treatment compared to every 4 or 6-day mowings. The dry weight of above-ground part was not affected by mowing frequency, but that of underground part was significantly higher for every 6-day mowing frequency(3.3kg/day/m2) compared to every 2 or 4-day mowings. The organic mater content in soil was not different among mowing treatments but it was significantly reduced by the core aerification treatment, indicating significant effect of core aerification on thatch decomposition. Occurrences of weeds such as annual bluegrass and crabgrass according to mowing frequency were greater in every 2-day mowing treatment, while plots mowed every 6 days had less weed occurrence. Occurrence of rusts significantly increased in high fertility plots and frequently mowed turfgrasses.
School is the center for life of the students, 30% of Korean population. Students spend half of their daily life at school. However, amenity of school is not so good because school grounds in Korea are covered with soil while in USA and Europe with turf. This study was conducted to provide guidelines for constructing natural turf ground at school. 1. As of 1999, number of school grounds covered with turfgrass in Korea is only 130 out of 10,345. More turfs grounds should be constructed to improve amenity of school. Dept. of Education in Japan supports schools to establish turf grounds. 2. In Korea, only Zoysia japonica is used while in Japan several turfgrasses such as Zlysiagrass, bermudagrass and tall fescue are used. 3. In Korea and Japan, turfgrass at school is planted on soil based rootzone system resulting poor quality by heaby traffic. Recently in Japan, sand based rootzone systems such as Califonia and USGA systems are used at the schools with many students. 4. School turf both in Korea and Japan was managed by students and teachers. Turf quality of schools in Korea was not so good due to the poor management.
Winter turfgrass injury is one of the critical problems of many golf courses in Korea. Turfgrass loss from freezing injury due to low temperature leads to many types of damages including weed invasion, increased herbicide cost, increased soil erosion, and expensive re-establishment. Although Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) which is the most widely used among cool-season grasses in Korea is well known as cold tolerance species, freezing injuries to Kentucky bluegrass during winter are often found. Protecting the turfgrass crown is necessary to recover from low temperature stress in winter because shoots and roots can be recovered from the crown. Turf covers may protect the crowns from direct low temperatures and desiccation. Six different turf covers were installed to cover Kentucky bluegrass during a period of low temperatures. Turf covers had positive effects for spring green-up of Kentucky bluegrass based on the study. Applying any type of turf covers on Kentucky bluegrass resulted in an increase average and minimum temperature compared to the uncovered plot. Among turf covers, clear PVC film without holes produced the longest root length and the highest turfgrass quality.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid fertilizer containing humate (LFH) on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating visual quality, chlorophyll content, dry weight of clipping, and nutrient content in leaves tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; control fertilizer (CF), HF-1 ($CF+1.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$), HF-2 ($CF+2.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$), and HF-3 ($CF+4.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$). As compared with CF, soil chemical properties of LFH treatments were not significantly. Visual quality and root dry weight of LFH treatments were higher than that of CF. Chlorophyll content, clipping yield and nitrogen uptake of HF-2 and HF-3 were increased 11.2-11.8%, 15.3-30.0%, 22-42% by application of LFH. The LFH level was positively correlated with visual quality, chlorophyll content, clipping yield or nutrient uptake amount. These results indicated that the application of LFH improved the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by increasing nutrient uptake and by prompting root growth.
The growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass seeded in the seaside landfill golf course are as follows. 1. As a result of analysis on the chemical characteristics of soil mixture used for turfgrass ground in this experiment, soil pH was 7.9, which is somewhat higher than the creeping bentgrass reference value of pH 5.5∼6.5; T-N(%) was 0.02, which is proper for the reference value, and trace element too lacked. 2. The cultivar with the fastest water infiltration was Seaside II recorded as 226.2cm/sec, while that with the slowest water infiltration was Pennlinks recorded as 141.1 cm/hr which was too faster than the USGA water infiltration reference value of 15∼30cm/hr. For the surface hardness of turfgrass ground with different cultivars, no statistically significant variation was found between the Penncross grass and the Pennlinks recorded as 18.6mm and 19.1 mm, respectively. The soil penetration was the highest in Pennlinks recorded as 7.6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and lowest in Penn A-1 as 6.1kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 3. As a result of evaluation on visual quality at the early stage of growth, Penncross showed the most excellent visual quality compared to the others. However, Penn A-1 showed the most excellent visual quality at a late stage of growth around Sep. 17, 2003, and it was also excellent in the evaluation of visual color. Seaside II showed higher density around the root and the longest root length and was highly resistant to salt compared to others, but the initial sprouting rate was not satisfied, and the visual quality in the summer season was inferior to others. 4. As a result of measurement of the traffic injury, Penncross showed the most tolerant to the traffic stress and Pennlinks showed the most susceptible.

Research was initiated to investigate turf performance under USGA soil system. USGA system 45 centimeters deep was built with rootzone layer, intermediate layer, and drainage layer. Six turfgrass entries were comprised of 3 blends and 3 mixtures from cool-season grasses (CSG). Turfgrass color and quality ratings were best in spring and fall, especially early May to early July and late August to early November. Kentucky bluegrass (KB) consistently produced the greatest performance, while perennial ryegrass (PR) the poorest. Intermediate turf performance between KB and PR was observed with tall fescue (TF). Among CSG mixtures it increased with KB but decreased with PR. There were considerable variations in summer turf Performance. No summer drought injury was found in KB and TF. However, PR showed poor performance through summer as compared with others. Among mixtures, it decreased with PR. It was suggested that PR mix in less than $20\%$ in the mixtures to have an acceptable quality in summer. Cultural intensity also affected it. With lowering mowing height, KB of rhizomatous-type in growth habit kept good quality, while PR and TF with bunch-type in growth habit poor quality. Mowing quality was greatly different among CSG. KB produced clean-cut surface, but PR unclean one. If had an intermediate mowing quality between KB and PR. A great difference in green color retention was observed among CSG. The longest CSG was PR that kept green for 339 days, while the shortest one TF for 267 days. KB continued to keep green for 290 days. The mixtures kept green in color for 292 to 315 days, depending on turfgrass mixing intensity. The greater the PR in content, the longer the green color duration. These results demonstrate that KB was the best and PR the worst among CSG grown in USGA system under a domestic climate, in regards of turf quality, color, mowing quality, summer turf performance and green color duration. KB and TF are most adequate for high-maintenance and low-maintenance area, respectively. In case of mixtures for high-quality turf, it was desirable to use KB-based mixture with PR of below $20\%$ in seeding rate.
Organic fertilizers are divided into natural organic and synthetic organics. The benefits of natural organic fertilizer were reported from the previous researches. However, the limited research results about clippings as a source of natural organic fertilizers were reported. The objective of the research to investigate effects of liquid fertilizer produced from fermented clippings for creeping bentgrass growth. Liquid fertilizer (LF) produced was used for the research to be compared with Urea and two natural organic fertilizers of different source (NO-1 and NO-2). Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L., L-93) was used for the study. Turfgrass quality was measured by visual evaluation every two weeks from June to October, 2011 using a scale of 1 to 9 (1=worst, 6=acceptable, and 9=best). Turfgrass disease damage was measured by percent of area damaged when a turfgrass disease occurred. LF produced lower damage than NO and urea when temperature was high. Although NO-2 produced the highest or equal to the highest turfgrass quality in June and October, LF had the highest or equal to the highest quality from July to September.
This study was carried out to provide recent information on zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) sod production in Japan. Total zoysiagrass sod production acreage in Japan was 6,623 ha. The acreage by prefecture was 3,900 ha (58.9%) in Ibalaki, 779 ha (11.8%) in Tostoli, 609 ha (9.2%) in Kagosima, and 550 ha (8.3%) in Sijeumoka, respectively. Sod was harvested by 1.5 cm sod thickness. Mowing height of Goraisiba (Zoysia matrella) and Nosiba (Zoysia japonica) cultivars was cut by 10 mm and 25 mm height, respectively. Japan agricultural cooperative issued a warranty of sod production quality to zoysiagrass consumers. A quality evaluation for sod production was carried out continuously to maintain a reasonable degree of uniformity and hight quality of sod production three times a year. Also, zosiagrass sod production was rotated with Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. glabra Regel) for improving fertility of soil every five to six years. Patented cultivars for promoting bland in Ibaraki prefecture of Japan were 'Tsukuba himae', 'Tsukuba kagayaki', 'Tsukuba Talou' and 'Tsukuba green'.
