An experimental Study of the Wake Flow Past a Rectangular Cylinder (長方形柱 後流에 關한 實驗的 硏究)

  • This paper describes characteristics of the flow pattern of the flow past a rectangular cylinder experimentally investigated. The width-to-length ratio of the section varried from 2 to4. For the statistical treatment, autocorrelation coefficient, probability density function and power spectral density function are obtained by the digital processing technic through on-line system with a hot wire anemometer. As a results, it was found that strong periodic coherent eddies structure is sustained to about 20H downstream from the cylinder. And nearer the cylinder in the wake, the number of turbulent eddies of a large scale coherent structure are comparatively much more dominant than that of a small scale one. By the analysis of power spectrum, It was cleared that there exists a certain range of the width to length ratio between 2.5 and 3 of which the flow pattern changes abruptly with a sudden discontinuity in Strouhal number.

  • The issues associated with the application of CFD for ship design are addressed. It is quite certain that the CFD tools are very useful in evaluating hull forms a prior to traditional towing tank tests. However, the time-consuming pre-processing is an obstacle in the daily application of CFD tools to improve hull forms. The accuracy of computational modeling without sacrificing the usability of CFD system is also to be assessed. The wave generation is still predicted by using potential panel methods, while velocity profiles entering into propeller plane is solved using turbulent flow solvers. The choice of turbulence model is a key to predict nominal wake distribution within acceptable accuracy. The experimental data for CFD validation are invaluable to improve physical and numerical modeling. Other applications of CFD for ship design than hull form improvement are also given. It is certain that CFD can be a cost-effective tool for the design of new and better ships.

Experimental Study for the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Slanted-Base Ogive Cylinder (기저면이 경사진 Ogive실린더의 공력특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements have been made on a range of slanted-base ogive cylinders, using the KANOMAX wind tunnel and balance system. Test Reynolds numbers(based on model maximum diameter) varied from $0.54{\times}10^{5}{\;}to{\;}1.56{\times}10^{5}$. Crossflow velocity maesurement was conducted by 5-hole pitot tube at $Re_{D}=1.46{\times}10^{5}$. For two base angle $({\theta}=30$ and 45 deg.), aerodynamic forces and moment were measured with increasing angle of attack(0~30 deg.). Two types of wake flow were observed, a quasisymetric turbulent closure or a longitudinal vortex flow. Aerodynamic characteristics differ dramatically between the two wake types. It was found that the drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients increased with increasing angle of attack.

  • An experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergence flow. In this paper, stabilization characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergence angle of duct and position of a circular cylinder. The fuel used is a commercial grade gaseous propane injected by two slit of rod. It is found that the positive pressure gradient greatly influences the eddy structure behind the rod. and that two different kinds of combustion patterns exist at the blowoff limit depending on the divergent angle of duct. They are distinguished by their wake structures: one associated with Karman vortex shedding, the other without it. Also, the blowoff velocity in the former is found to be higher than in the later.

  • The aim of this paper is to research the change in the turbulent flow and the AOA occurred by $60^{\circ}$ crosswind to the direction of runway through the three-dimensional numerical analysis and to predict the take-off and landing flight stability. As a result, the maximum amplitude of AOA variation on runway reached $4.88^{\circ}$ within 7 second because of the wake formed by the constructions in the vicinity of the airport, and the overall effects appeared as an irregular aperiodic forms. Additionally, it was observed that the layout and shape of the buildings effected on the strength of turbulence directly, and the rapid flow generated between the buildings changed into stronger wake and eventually expected that the flow raises serious take-off and landing flight instability.

  • In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be Propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

  • A flow modeling method has been developed to analyze the flow in the annular base (rear- facing surface) of a circular engine nacelle flying at subsonic speed but with a supersonic exhaust jet. Real values of exhaust gas properties and temperature at an altitude of 30, 000 feet are employed. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conserva- tion of mass, momentum and energy for the wake flow field is achieved by multiple iterations with modest computer requirements.

An Experimental Study on Drag Reduction of Grooved Cylinders (Riblet 홈을 가진 원주의 저항감소에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Wake structures behind two circular cylinders with different groove configurations(U and V-shape) have been investigated experimentally. The results were compared with those for the smooth cylinder having the same diameter D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number in the range of Re(sub)D=8,000∼14,000. As a result, the U-shaped groove was found to reduce the drag up to 18.6%, but the V-shaped groove reduced drag force only 2.5% compared with the smooth cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency becomes a little larger than that of the smooth cylinder. The visualized flow using the smoke-wire and particle tracing methods shows the flow structure qualitatively.

  • This paper is concerned with the effects of periodically approaching upstream wakes on cascade-flow and loss. The reduced frequency of the periodic wakes was varied in the narrow range from 0.5 to 0.7 Corresponding to a wake-passing through the cascade, two velocity deficits appeared near the boundary layer contour in the downstream from about 60% chord-length. The first velocity deficit was caused by a periodic wake and the second one appeared after some delayed time. The second velocity deficit was interpreted as the results of reattachment of flow-separation. The higher reduced frequency decreased the duration time of separation appearance and the lesser losses of blade were resulted.
