  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the break-up characteristics by taking advantage of a two-phase coaxial nozzle. Air and water are utilized as working fluids and the mass ratio air/water has been controlled to characterize the atomization, diffusion and development of mixing process. By way of a photographic technique, conventional developing structures and diffusion angles have been analyzed systematically with variations of mass ratios. The turbulent flow components of the atomized particles were measured by a two channel LDV system and the data were treated by an on-lined measurement equipment. According to the photographic results the spreading angles decreased because the axial inertia moment was relatively higher than the lateral one with respect to the increase of mass ratio. It is found the jet flow diffuses linearly in a certain limit region while the atomizing characteristics, in terms of the distributions of particle diameters did not show particular differences. It may be expected that these fundamental results can be used as reference data in studying the atomization, breakup and diffusions.

  • A two-dimensional depth-integrated hydrodynamic and a depth-averaged passive scalar transport models were developed by using a Compact Finite Volume Method (CFVM) which can assure a higher order accuracy. A typical wave current interaction experimental data set was compared with the computed results by the proposed CFVM model, and resonable agreements were observed from the comparisons. One and two dimensional scalar advection tests were conducted, and very close agreements were observed with very little numerical diffusion. Finally, a turbulent mixing simulation was done in an open channel flow, and a reasonable similarity with LES data was observed.

  • Unsteady thermally stratified flow caused by two-dimensional surface discharge of warm water into a oblong channel was investigated. Experimental study was focused on the rapidly developing thermal diffusion at small Richardson number. The basic objective were to study the interfacial mixing between a flowing layer of warm water and an underlying body of cold water and to accumulate experimental data to test computational turbulence models. Mean velocity field measurements were carried out by using NMR-CT (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-Computerized Tomography). It detects quantitative flow image of any desired section in any direction of flow in short time. Results show that at small Richardson number warm layer rapidly penetrates into the cold layer because of strong turbulent mixing and instability between the two layers. It is found that the transfer ofheat across the interface is more vigorous than that of momentum. It is also proved that the NMR-CT technique is a very valuable tool to measure unsteady three dimensional flow field.

  • We measured emission indices for $NO_x$, CO, temperature and radical characteristics for partially premixied flames formed by suction & blow fans air condition. At sufficiently high levels of partial premixing a double flame structure consisting of a rich premixed inner flame and outer diffusion flame was established similar to that previously observed in premixed flames. $NO_x$, Temperature, CO values were experimented with approximately constant air flow rate and decreasing equivalence ratios. The reduction in $NO_x$ and temperature at suction condition as compared with that for blow condition was approximately 20%, but on the contrary, CO emission was increased. In addition, We measured temperature distributions and found that temperature increased continuously with increasing partial premixing. We also estimated CH, $C_2$ radical intensity. CH and $C_2$ radicals provide evidence that, for the present measurement, CH and $C_2$ radicals intensity was associsated with their premixed component. And we observed stronger $C_2$, CH radicals intensity at suction conditions than blow conditions.

  • Present study has been conducted to see the relative effects of adding N: to fuel-side and air-side on flame structure, soot formation and NOx emissions. Experiments were carried out to ascertain to what degree chemical kinetics and/or molecular transport effects can explain the differences in soot formation and NOx emission by studying laminar diffusion flames. Direct photograph was taken to see the flame structure. CARS techniques was used to get the flame temperature profiles. And spatial distribution of soot could be obtained by PLII method. CHEMKIN code was also used to estimate the global residence time to predict NOx emissions at each condition. Results from these studies indicate that fuel-side dilution is more effective than air-side dilution in view of NOx emissions. However, air-side dilution shows greater effectiveness over fuel-side dilution in soot formation. And turbulent mixing and heat transfer problems were thought to be considered in practical applications.

  • Numerical prediction of the pollutant dispersion over a two-dimensional hilly terrain is presented. The dispersion model used in the present work is based on the gradient diffusion theory and the finite-volume method on a non-orthogonal boundary-fitted grid system. The numerical model is validated by comparing the results with the available experimental data for the flat-floor dispersion within a turbulent boundary-layer. The numerical error analysis is performed based on the guideline of Kasibhatla et al.(1988) for the elevated-source dispersion in the flat-floor boundary layer having a power-law velocity and linear eddy-diffusivity profile. The influences of the two-dimensional hilly terrain on the dispersion from a continuously released source are numerically investigated by changing the emission locations and heights. It is found that the distributions of ground-level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and the emission height. Hence, the terrain amplification factor is greatly enhanced when the pollutant source is located within a flow separation region. Dispersion from a source of short duration is also simulated and the duration time of the pollutant is compared at several downstream locations on a hilly terrain. The results of the numerical prediction are applied to the evaluation of environmental impacts due to the automobile exhausts at the seashore highway with a parallel mountain range.

  • The dynamic structures of unsteady CH$_4$/Air jet diffusion flame with a flame-vortex interaction were numerically investigated. A timed-dependent, axisymmetric computational model and a low mach number approximation were employed in the present calculation. A two-step global reaction mechanism which considers 6 species, was used to calculate the reaction rates. The predicted results including the gravitational effect show that the large outer vortices and the small inner vortices can be well simulated without any additional disturbances near nozzle tip. It was found that the temperature and species concentrations have deviated values even for the same mixture fraction in the flame-vortex interaction region. It was also shown that the flame surface is not deformed by the inner vortex in upstream region, while in downstream region, the flame surface is compressed or stretched by the outer vortex roll-up. The present unsteady jet flame configuration accompanying a flame-vortex interaction is expected to give good implications for the unsteady structures of turbulent flames.

  • For the development of high efficiency and low emission combustion systems, high temperature air combustion technology has been tested by utilizing preheated air over 1100 K and exhaust gas recirculation. In this system, combustion air is diluted with large amount of exhaust gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$), such that the oxygen concentration is relatively low in the reaction zone, leading to low flame temperature. Since, the temperature fluctuations and sound emissions form the flame are small and flame luminosity is low, the combustion mode is expected to be flameless or mild combustion. Experiment was performed to investigate the turbulent flame structure and $NO_X$ emission characteristics in the high temperature air combustion focused on coflowing jet diffusion flames which has a fundamental structure of many practical combustion systems. The effect of turbulence has also been evaluated by installing perforated plate in the oxidizer inlet nozzle. LPG was used as a fuel. Results showed that even though $NO_X$ emission is sensitive to the combustion air temperature, the present high temperature air combustion system produce low $NO_X$ emission because it is operated in low oxygen concentration condition in excess of dilution.

  • Most astrophysical systems are turbulent and magnetized. Magnetic field plays an important role in the dynamics of astrophysical system and influence all of properties of astrophysical system. Therefore, information of magnetic field is very important to understand properties of astrophysical system. One way to obtain information of magnetic field is to use rotation measure. Mean strength of the magnetic field along the line of sight can be estimated from RM/DM, where RM is rotation measure and DM is dispersion measure. For the estimation of magnetic field strength using RM/DM, the correlation between density and magnetic field. When there is no correlation between density and magnetic field the relation gives exact mean magnetic strength. But if the positive correlation, it overestimates the magnetic field strength, while if the correlation is negative, it underestimate the magnetic field strength. In general, the ICM (intracluter medium) and the ISM (interstellar medium) cases, viscosity has a value greater than magnetic diffusion. We performed compressible MHD turbulence simulations and we studied correlation between density and magnetic field in different values of viscosity and magnetic diffusion. In most cases, we found weak or negative relations between the density and magnetic fields. We discuss implication of our results.
