The majority of experiments to characterize the turbulence in the surface layer have been performed in flat, open expanses. In order to characterize the turbulence in built-up terrain, two mobile towers were deployed during Hurricane Ike (2008) in close proximity, but downwind of different terrain conditions: suburban and open. Due to the significant non-stationarity of the data primarily caused by changes in wind direction, empirical mode decomposition was employed to de-trend the signal. Analysis of the data showed that the along-wind mean turbulence intensity of the suburban terrain was 37% higher than that of the open terrain. For the mean vertical turbulence intensity, the increase for the suburban terrain was as high as 74%, which may have important implications in structural engineering. The gust factor of the suburban terrain was also 16% higher than that of the open terrain. Compared to non-hurricane spectral models, the obtained spectra showed significantly higher energy in low frequencies especially for the open terrain.
We use three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the characteristics of turbulence driven in rotating, vertically-stratified disk. Our models are isothermal, and local in the in-plane direction while global in the vertical direction. We allow localized regions with density larger than the threshold value to explode and inject kinetic energy to the surrounding medium in the real space rather than Fourier space, mimicking supernova explosions thought to be the dominant turbulence source. This work extends our previous study where we studied turbulence in a non-rotating, uniform environment. We find that the galaxy rotation does not make a significant difference in the turbulence level at saturation, since the associated shear velocity is much smaller than the explosion velocity. We analyze the properties of turbulence in our models and compare them with those from the uniform-density models. We also discuss the astrophysical implication of our findings.

Homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT) with no mean flow is a very useful type of flow for basic turbulence research. However, it is difficult to generate HIT in the lab. In this study, we implemented HIT in a confined box through synthetic jet actuators using sub-woofer speakers. Characteristics of HIT are varied depending on the strength of the jets. We used 2D PIV to measure the velocity field. Turbulence statistics such as homogeneity, isotropy ratio, turbulence kinetic energy, dissipation rate, Taylor microscale, Kolmogorov scale, and velocity correlation coefficient were calculated. Most of the turbulence statistics increased exponentially according to the strength of the jets, and the Taylor Reynolds number reached up to 185.

The thermal load is a very important problem to be solved in many industrial systems including the electronic equipment. Impinging Jets have been known to provide a large heat transfer rates on surface for many years. The turbulence enhancement of fluid flow is requested for the efficiency elevation of heat transfer. A study on flow fields by rods attached to the wall surface as a promoter of turbulence enhancement has been carried out. The exact analysis on chracteristics of impinging jet field is requested to obtain the optimum design of the impinging jet system. By visualizing the flow field and processing the high digital image by computer PIV can afford exact data on the velocity vector kinetic energy and turbulence intensity in the complex turbulence field. In this study. three kinds of rod shape such as square. triangle. and semicircle are selected as the turbulence promoter. Nozzle diameters are 10mm. 17mm. and 23mm. And the analysis of the flow characteristics due to the above rods is carried out at Re No. 2.000, 3.000. and 4,000 by PIV measurement. It is clarified that the rod setup is very useful to obtain the turbulence enhancement and the turbulence intensity according to the shapes of rod appears large in order of the shapes of rod such as square 〉 triangle 〉semicircle.
A study on factors influencing measurement error of Ground-based LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) system was conducted in Kimnyeong wind turbine test site on Jeju Island. Three properties of wind including inclined angle, turbulence intensity and power law exponent were taken into account as factors influencing the measurement error of Ground-based LiDAR. In order to calculate LiDAR measurements error, 2.5-month wind speed data collected from LiDAR (WindCube v2) were compared with concurrent data from the anemometer on a nearby 120m-high meteorological mast. In addition, data filtering was performed and its filtering criteria was based on the findings at previous researches. As a result, at 100m above ground level, absolute LiDAR error rate with absolute inclined angle showed 4.58~13.40% and 0.77 of the coefficients of determination, $R^2$. That with turbulence intensity showed 3.58~23.94% and 0.93 of $R^2$ while that with power law exponent showed 4.71~9.53% and 0.41 of $R^2$. Therefore, it was confirmed that the LiDAR measurement error was highly affected by inclined angle and turbulence intensity, while that did not much depend on power law exponent.
The effects of stroke change on turbulent kinetic energy for the in-cylinder flow of a four-valve SI engine were studied. For this study, the same intake manifold, head, cylinder, and the piston were used to examine turbulence characteristics in two different strokes. In-cylinder flow measurements were conducted using three dimensional LDV system. The measurement method, which simultaneously collects 3-D velocity data, allowed a evaluation of turbulent kinetic energy inside a cylinder. High levels of turbulent kinetic energy were found in regions of high shear flow, attributed to the collisions of intake flows. These specific results support the more general conclusion that the inlet conditions play the dominant role in the generation of the turbulence fields during the intake stroke. However, in the absence of two counter rotating vortices, this intake generated turbulent kinetic energy continues to decrease but at a much faster rate.
We study the properties of supernova (SN) driven interstellar turbulence with a numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. Calculations were done using the RIEMANN framework for MHD, which is highly suited for astrophysical flows because it tracks shocks using a Riemann solver and ensures pressure positivity and a divergence-free magnetic field. We start our simulations with a uniform density threaded by a uniform magnetic field. A simplified radiative cooling curve and a constant heating rate are also included. In this radiatively-cooling magnetized medium, we explode SNe one at a time at randomly chosen positions with SN explosion rates equal to and 12 times higher than the Galactic value. The evolution of the system is basically determined by the input energy of SN explosions and the output energy of radiative cooling. We follow the simulations to the point where the total energy of the system, as well as thermal, kinetic, and magnetic energy individually, has reached a quasi-stationary value. From the numerical experiments, we find that: i) both thermal and dynamical processes are important in determining the phases of the interstellar medium, and ii) the power index n of the $B-p^n$ relation is consistent with observed values.
This study has analysed the ultimate loads acting on a wind turbine which is operating in a high turbulent flow condition because the ultimate loads are critical factors on the safe design of wind turbine. Since wind flow on the most parts of Korean mountainous are strongly influenced by complex configurations of the topography, turbulence intensity on somewhere is so stronger than an international design standard. For this reason, the characteristics of turbulent wind data collected from actual sites were analyzed and used for the ultimate load evaluation of the wind turbine. With the 270 design load cases on the international standards, the differences of ultimate loads on the wind turbine operating in the standard or high turbulent wind condition are calculated and compared for the an enhanced knowledge of the safe design basis. As are result, it is revealed the specific ultimate loads are strongly affected by the high turbulent wind conditions, thus the characteristics of turbulent flow must be considered during the design of wind turbine.

A supersonic base flow is computed to investigate the effect of the eddy viscosity coefficient to the linear ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models. Slight modifications to the eddy viscosity coefficient, which are based on the realizability condition, are given to the Launder-Sharma turbulence model so that present models satisfy the realizability condition. Numerical results for supersonic base flow show that turbulence models with the weaky-nonlinear eddy viscosity coefficient can lead to reasonable enhancements in the prediction of the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy profiles.

A study on the fluid flow with ultrasonic forcing is carried out to obtain data for the turbulence enhancement. A large water tank is made of the transparent acrylic plates and a horizontal flow field is given by setting two acrylic tubes to face mutually on a horizontal line. A 2-dimensional PlV system which is composed of a continuous-output 4W Argon-ion laser, a high-speed video camera, a PC based by an image grabber and a high resolution monitor is used to investigate characteristics of the complex turbulence flow field. And a 2MHz ultrasonic transducer is used fur ultrasonic vibration forcing. Some experiments are carried out at Reynolds numbers of 2,000 and 4,000 and at 7 angles of ultrasonic incidence. In results, the flew velocity vector distribution, kinetic energy and turbulence intensity in both cases of with and without ultrasonic forcing are examined, compared and discussed by using PIV measurement. It is clarified that the ultrasonic forcing into flow field is valid to obtain the turbulence enhancement.
