In this paper, the aspects on modeling and control of an existing wind turbine are discussed. When designing control for variable-speed wind turbine, one deals with highly resonant, nonlinear dynamic systems subject to random excitation, i.e. wind turbulence. This requires good knowledge of the dynamics to be controlled. This paper describes an mathematical modeling of wind turbines with emphasis on control design for an existing wind turbine.
The backward-facing step (BFS) is a benchmark geometry for analyzing flow separation occurred at the edge and resulting development of shear layer and recirculation zone that are occupied by turbulent flow. It is important to accurately reproduce and analyze the mean flow and turbulence statistics of such flows to design physically stable and performance assurance structure. We carried out 3D RANS computations with widely used, two representative turbulence models, k-ω SST and RNG k-ε, to reproduce BFS flow at the Reynolds number of 23,000 and the Froude number of 0.22. The performance of RANS computations is evaluated by comparing numerical results with an experimental measurement. Both RANS computations with two turbulence models appear to reasonably well reproduce mean flow in the shear layer and recirculation zone, while RNG k-ε computation results in about 5% larger velocity between the outer edge of boundary layer and the free surface above the recirculation zone than k-ω SST computation and experiment. Both turbulence models underestimate the shear stress distribution experimentally observed just downstream of the sharp edge of BFS, while shear stresses computed in the boundary layer downstream of reattachment point are agree reasonably well with experimental measurement. RNG k-ε modeling reproduces better shear stress distribution along the bottom boundary layer, but overestimates shear shear stress in the approaching boundary layer and above the bottom boundary layer downstream of the BFS.
The paper reports a multiple source modeling of low-Reynolds-number dissipation rate equation with aids of DNS data. The key features of the model are to satisfy the wall limiting conditions of the individual source terms in the exact dissipation rate equation using the wall damping functions. The wall damping functions are formulated in term of dimensionless dissipation length scale ι(sup)+(sub)D(≡ι(sub)D($\upsilon$$\xi$)(sup)1/4/$\upsilon$) and the invariants of small and large scale turbulence anisotropy tensors. $\alpha$(sub)ij(=$\mu$(sub)i$\mu$(sub)j/$\kappa$-2$\delta$(sub)ij/3) and e(sub)ij(=$\xi$(sub)ij/$\xi$-2$\delta$(sub)ij/3). The model constants are optimized with aids of DNS data in a plane channel flow. Adopting the dissipation length scale as a parameter of damping function, the applicabilities of $\kappa$-$\xi$ model are extended to the turbulent flow calculation of complex flow passages.
In the present study, CFD is employed to investigate phenomena occurring during a process of thermal stratification in U-bent pipes at transitional Reynolds number. URANS evaluation had been chosen for its low computational costs during transient analysis and for the evaluation of modeling performance in these conditions. Application of CFD at transitional Reynolds number and buoyancy driven flows indeed contains deeper uncertainties in relation to the range of applicability for hydrodynamic and thermal models. The methodology applied in the work points out, through validations with the basic problems constituting the complex stratified phenomenon, the applicability of the current turbulence modeling. Accurate predictions have been found in relation to transitional Reynolds number in bent pipes and region of stability induced by the gravitational field. On the other hand the defects introduced in the unstable region of the U bent pipe, are discussed in relation to the adopted modeling.
This study is intended for validation of numerical modeling of a residential building which is made to simulate a phenomenon of fire extension from floor to floor. A common residential building which has the area of 80m2 each floor and some combustibles were chosen for numerical modeling. The combustible models were verified through comparing results of numerical simulations and real fire tests. For computational analysis, the Fire Dynamics Simulator was used with Large Eddy Simulation model for turbulence. Consequently, fire-intensity was well predicted and flash-over of rooms were successfully estimated.

Numerical simulation has been performed in this study to investigate the capabilities of turbulence modeling schemes on estimating the film cooling at a referenced parallel wall jet-nozzle configuration. Also a additional simulation has been performed for film cooling under 2-dimensional axis symmetry conditions at a parallel wall jet-nozzle configuration. It was concluded that the best turbulence model is the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model with enhanced wall functions. Also a additional simulation showed the film cooling characteristics that are resonable physically.

Exhaust plume effects on longitudinal aerodynamics of missile were investigated by wind tunnel tests using a solid plume simulator and CFD analyses with both the solid plume and air jet plumes. Approximate plume boundary prediction technique was used to produce the outer shape of the solid plumer and chamber conditions and nozzle shapes of the air jet plumes were determined through plume modeling technique to compensate the difference in thermodynamic properties between air and real plume. From comparisons among turbulence models in case of external flow interaction with the air jet plume, Spalart-Allmaras model turned out to give accurate result and to be less grid-dependent. Effects induced by the plume were evaluated through the computations with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the air jet plume to account for various ratios of chamber and ambient pressure and Reynolds number under the flight test condition.
The interdisciplinary research area of small scale energy harvesting has attracted tremendous interests in the past decades, with a goal of ultimately realizing self-powered electronic systems. Among the various available ambient energy sources which can be converted into electricity, wind energy is a most promising and ubiquitous source in both outdoor and indoor environments. Significant research outcomes have been produced on small scale wind energy harvesting in the literature, mostly based on piezoelectric conversion. Especially, modeling methods of wind energy harvesting techniques plays a greatly important role in accurate performance evaluations as well as efficient parameter optimizations. The purpose of this paper is to present a guideline on the modeling methods of small-scale wind energy harvesters. The mechanisms and characteristics of different types of aeroelastic instabilities are presented first, including the vortex-induced vibration, galloping, flutter, wake galloping and turbulence-induced vibration. Next, the modeling methods are reviewed in detail, which are classified into three categories: the mathematical modeling method, the equivalent circuit modeling method, and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. This paper aims to provide useful guidance to researchers from various disciplines when they want to develop and model a multi-way coupled wind piezoelectric energy harvester.

Two aspects of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) are investigated in order to improve its performance. The first one is on how to determine the model coefficient in conjunction with a dynamic subgrid-scale model, and the second one is on a wall-layer model(WLM) which allows one to skip near-wall regions to save a large number of grid points otherwise required. Especially, a WLM suitable for a separated flow is considered. Firstly, an averaging technique to calculate the model coefficient of dynamic subgrid-scale modeling(DSGSM) is introduced. The technique is based on the concept of local averaging, and useful to stabilize numerical solution in conjunction with LES of complex turbulent flows using DSGSM. It is relatively simple to implement, and takes very low overhead in CPU time. It is also able to detect the region of negative model coefficient where the "backscattering" of turbulence energy occurs. Secondly, a wall-layer model based on a local turbulence intensity is considered. It locally determines wall-shear stresses depending on the local flow situations including separation, and yields better predictions in separated regions than the conventional WLM. The two techniques are tested for a turbulent obstacle flow, and show the direction of further improvements.rovements.
Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated. The flat plate type heat exchanger is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulence promoter type heat exchanger is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulence promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type heat exchanger has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is used as the turbulent flow modeling, the SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat the coupling between pressure and velocity, and first order upwind scheme is used for discretization of momentum, turbulent and energy. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type.
