Control algorithms and implementation issues for a wind turbine simulator are presented for realistic emulation of variable wind characteristics using a lab-scale motor and generator set. When the average wind speed nd turbulence level is given, the torque reference of prime mover is decided through various blocks, such as random wind speed generator, blade characteristic curves, and tower effect compensation. The variable nature of wind can be implemented and tested by not only the computer simulation but also the hardware-in-loop-simulator (HILS). Some application examples of HILS include the development and test of turbine control software for more efficient and stable operation. Feasibility of the proposed simulator has verified by computer simulations and experiment.

It is essential for the valid design of a marine flow-control valve to exactly know its flow characteristics. The present study has numerically investigated the flow characteristics inside a marine throttle-type globe valve using a kind of commercial CFD code, CFX10.0, with an adoption of the SST (Shear-Stress Transport) turbulence model. To validate the numerical approach, the flow coefficients are compared with the experimental ones. Results show that the globe valve is effective in the control of flow rate according to the opening ratio in case of the forward-direction flow, whereas it is effective in the flow shutoff in case of the reverse-direction flow. Around the inlet of the valve, a recirculation region is formed due to the blunt body shape, the turbulence intensity becomes strengthened and then an abrupt pressure loss occurs.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems are rapidly gaining popularity as effective means of transferring data at high rates over short distances. OWC facilitates rapidly deployable, lightweight, high-capacity communication without licensing fees and tariffs. Nevertheless, the performance of this new technology depends strongly on the atmospheric conditions and the characteristics of the link. In this work, we study the influence of these parameters on both the average (ergodic) capacity and the outage capacity of an OWC system over moderate to strong turbulence channels modeled by gamma-gamma distribution. Moreover, we compare the results that we obtain estimating the average and outage capacities.

Passenger plane flying motion graphics is very important for route, control of the flight altitude and passenger safety. For all that, it is quite useful for route away from the disruptive influences such as vibrations caused by storms or turbulence during the flight and in processes such as re-arrest of the specified route. Therefore, the response time against the adverse effects of the shape and the system is so necessary for both safety and comfort. In this study motion and route graphics were obtained under the control of an airliner C # interface with the program. In this way, graphics were obtained in solving the equations of motion in short time and design time was shortened.
The interaction of head waves with an infinite row of identical, equally spaced, rectangular breakwaters is investigated in the presence of uneven bottom topography. Using linear water wave theory and matched eigenfunction expansion method, the boundary value problem is transformed into a system of linear algebraic equations which are numerically solved to know the velocity potentials completely. Utilizing this method, reflected and transmitted wave energy are computed for different physical parameters along with the wave field in the vicinity of breakwaters. It is observed that the wave field becomes more complicated when the incoming wavelength becomes smaller than the channel width. A critical ratio of the gap width to the channel width, corresponding to the inflection point of the transmitted energy variation, is identified for which 1/3 of the total energy is transmitted. Similarly, depending on the incident wavelength, there is a critical breakwater width for which a minimum energy is transmitted. Further, the accuracy of the computed results is verified by using the derived energy relation.

Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

The main objective of a torque controller below rated wind speed is to extract maximum power from the potential wind energy. To do this, the torque control method, which adjusts the torque magnitude and makes it proportional to the square of the generator speed, has been applied. However, this method makes the response slower as the wind turbines are getting larger in size with multi-MW capacities. In this paper, a torque control method that uses the nonlinear parameter of rotor speed for aerodynamic torque as a control gain is discussed to improve the response by adjusting an additional torque magnitude. The nonlinear parameter of the rotor speed could be calculated both online and offline. It is shown that the offline case is more practical and effective in producing power through the numerical simulation of a 2MW wind turbine by considering the real turbulence wind speed.
In this paper, the aspects on modeling and control of an existing wind turbine are discussed. When designing control for variable-speed wind turbine, one deals with highly resonant, nonlinear dynamic systems subject to random excitation, i.e. wind turbulence. This requires good knowledge of the dynamics to be controlled. This paper describes an mathematical modeling of wind turbines with emphasis on control design for an existing wind turbine.
This paper deals with the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) 5-MW reference wind turbine. The controller which include MPPT (Maximum power point tracking) control algorithm and tower load reduction control algorithm was designed by MATLAB Simulink. This paper propose a tower damper algorithm to improve the existing tower damper algorithm. To improve the existing tower damper algorithm, proposed tower damper algorithm were applied the thrust sensitivity scheduling and PI control method. The thrust sensitivity scheduling was calculated by thrust force formula which include thrust coefficient table. Power and Tower root moment DEL (Damage Equivalent Load) was set as a performance index to verify the load reduction algorithm. The simulation were performed 600 seconds under the wind conditions of the NTM (Normal Turbulence Model), TI (Turbulence Intensity)16% and 12~25m/s average wind speed. The effect of the proposed tower damper algorithm is confirmed through PSD (Power Spectral Density). The proposed tower damper algorithm reduces the fore-aft moment DEL of the tower up to 6% than the existing tower damper algorithm.
Fire protection is one of important issues to ensure safety and reduce risks of nuclear power plants (NPPs). While robust programs to shut down commercial reactors in any fires have been successfully maintained, the concept and associated regulatory requirements are constantly changing or strengthening by lessons learned from operating experiences and information all over the world. As part of this context, it is necessary not only to establish specific fire hazard assessment methods reflecting the characteristics of research reactors and educational reactors but also to make decisions based on advancement encompassing numerical analyses and experiments. The objectives of this study are to address fire simulation in the control room of an educational reactor and to discuss integrity of digital console in charge of main operation as well as analysis results through comparison. Three electrical fire scenarios were postulated and twenty-four thermal analyses were carried out taking into account two turbulence models, two cable materials and two ventilation conditions. Twelve supplementary thermal analyses and six subsequent structural analyses were also conducted for further examination on the temperature and heat flux of cable and von Mises stress of digital console, respectively. As consequences, effects of each parameter were quantified in detail and future applicability was briefly discussed. On the whole, higher profiles were obtained when Deardorff turbulence model was employed or polyvinyl chloride material and larger ventilation condition were considered. All the maximum values considered in this study met the allowable criteria so that safety action seems available by sustained integrity of the cable linked to digital console within operators' reaction time of 300 s.
