The effects of casing shape on the performance and interaction between the impeller and casing in a small-size turbo-compressor are investigated. Numerical analysis is conducted for the compressor with circular and single volute casings from inlet to discharge nozzle. In order to predict the flow pattern inside the entire impeller, vaneless diffuer and casing, calculations with multiple frames of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For compressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and three-dimensional time-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations are employed. To evaluate the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure and loss coefficients are obtained with various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load. To prove the accuracy of numerical results, measurements of static pressure around casing and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor are peformed for the circular casing. Comparisons of these results between the experimental and numerical analyses are conducted, and reasonable agreement is obtained.
In this study an analysis of the flow characteristics in three types of turbo-fans for a vacuum cleaner was performed by using CFD. The characteristics of three models calculated for various rotating speed for flow rates are obtained and compared with measured data. The mixing plane approach is applied to compute the flow between impeller and diffuser. The results show that the model that is modified to reduce fan noise gives stable flow characteristics in operating range than the original model, with both models show similar performance characteristics at the range of high flow rate. Since in the modified model it takes much longer for an impeller blade to pass a diffuser blade than in the original model, and the peak pressure at BPF can be relieved, it is anticipated that the modified model give much lower noise level with similar performance than the original one, which remains to be verified by unsteady computation and measurements. The good agreement between the predictions and measurement results confirms the validity of this study.
In this paper, we identify the noise source and the path of a chiller. This chiller is newly developed for R-l34a refrigerant and 250 RT cooling capacity. The measured overall SPL of the developed turbo-chiller is about 100 dBA. Due to the high rotating speed of the centrifugal impeller, the nun noise source of the chiller is the blade passing frequency and its higher harmonics of the centrifugal impeller. This generated soundpropagates through the duct, and then transmits and radiates to the outer field. From the experiment, it is found that the high frequency noise is mostlytransmitted and radiated through the elbow duct, but the low frequency noise is transmitted and vadiated through the condenser wall. Therefore applying the absorbing material is an effective way of reducing the high and low frequency noise simultaneously. Measurement results show that the application of the sound absorbing material to the elbow duct reduced the overall sound pressure level by 4 dB compared to the 9 dBA reduction for the case of full enclosure. In order to control the generated noise, a dissipativetype silencer is also designed and tested. The silencer reduced the radiated noise about 7.5 dBA.
Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate tip clearance effect on through-flow and performance of a centrifugal compressor which has the same configuration of impeller with six different tip clearances. Secondary flow and loss distribution have been surveyed to understand the flow mechanism due to the tip clearance. Tip leakage flow strongly interacts with mainstream flow and considerably changes the secondary flow and the loss distribution inside the impeller passage. A method has been described to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance drop and the efficiency drop. The tip clearance has caused specific work reduction and additional entropy generation. The former, which is called inviscid loss, is independent of any internal loss and the latter, which is called viscous loss, is dependent on every loss in the flow passage. Two components equally affected the performance drop as the tip clearances were small, while the efficiency drop was influenced by the viscous component alone. The additional entropy generation was modeled with all the kinetic energy of the tip leakage flow. Therefore, the present paper can provide how to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance and efficiency.
The objective of present study is to find the interaction between volute and impeller of the centrifugal turbomachinery with rectangular cross-sectional volute. Flow measurement were taken in shrouded impeller with 12 backward type blades by using a five-hole pressure probe. The measurements are carried out in 7 flow rate, respectively. Primary function of a centrifugal turbo machinery volute is to serve the flow from the impeller and diffuser to pipe system. For the off-design conditions, Influence of pressure distortion was shown by these measurements. As a result, It has caused the decrease of total efficiency of centrifugal turbomachinery. We have also taken data to design volute by these measurements.

There are screw, reciprocating and turbo compressor by structure in an air compressor, essential equipment on he industrial spot. Resently it is wide that the range of turbo compressor's use in gradual, turbo compressor needs high speed rotation of impeller in structure, high rated gearbox and conventional induction motor. This mechanical system increased the moment of inertia and mechanical friction loss. Resently the study of turbo compressor applied super high speed motor and drive, removing gearbox made its size small and mechanical friction loss minimum. In this study we tried to develope variable super high speed motor drive systems for 150Hp, 70,000rpm drect drive Turbo compressor. The result of study is applied to a 150Hp direct turbo compressor and makes it goods.
A dynamic model of turbo compressor having helical gear pairs is developed. The model accounts for the shaft and bearing flexibilities, gyroscopic effects and the force couplings among the transverse, torsion. and axial motions due to gearings. For the mode analysis of turbo compressor, a transfer matrix method is used. The excitation sources caused by the mass unbalances of the rotors and misalignment of the shafts, the transmitted errors of the gearings. and the vane passing frequencies of the Impeller are studied qualitatively. By introducing the perturbation method, the generated forcing frequencies are defined and devided into three groups. With the field data, two critical speeds are analytically found and the corresponding modal characteristics are examined.

This study is concerned with development of air supply system in 250kW MCFC fuel cell system. The turbo blower is decided as an air supply system to increase the efficiency of fuel cell system. The turbo blower consists of an impeller, two vaneless diffuser, a vaned diffuser and a volute. The cascade diffuser is used to raise the efficiency of turbo blower. An aerodynamic design was done by applying the repeating design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic calculation. It is confirmed from meanline and 3D flow analysis results that the operating range is enough and design requirements are successfully achieved. The performance test results were also included in this paper.

Turbo fan as an air moving device is widely used for its silent characteristics and high efficiency relative to the other centrifugal multi blade impeller. In general, turbo fan is installed with a scroll casing for energy conversion from kinetic one to pressure energy. However, a turbo fan without scroll casing is considered as a present model that is proposed model for compact design of a product In detail, the model has only 4 cutoffs as guiders for 4 separated outlets. Specially, equal distribution of flow rate generated by the model blower is main interest in this investigation. The optimal position of the guider is found by reducing abnormal flows such as reverse flow in each outlet.

This paper presents the study on the contact stress analysis of a pair of mating helical gears for turbo blower during rotation. Turbo blowers need high speed rotation of impeller in structure and high rate gear ratio. The use of helical gear indicated that noise was an important problem when the application involves high speeds and large power transmission. An example is presented to investigate the variation of contact stress on a pair of mating gears with contact positions. The variation of contact stress during rotation is compared with the contact stress at the lowest point of single tooth contact(LPSTC) and AGMA Equation for contact stress. In this study, the gear design considering the contact stress on a pair of mating gear is more severe than that of AGMA standard.
