  • The adaptive transmission techniques are efficient method for underwater acoustic communication to improve the system efficiency by varying transmission parameters according to channel conditions. In this paper, we construct four transmission modes with different data rates using the convolutional codes, which is freely set to size of information bits. On the receiver side, one critical component of adaptive system is to find which mode has best performance. In this paper, we proposed threshold detection algorithm to decide appropriate mode and applied turbo equalization method based on BCJR decoder in order to improve performance. We analyzed the performance of four modes based on threshold detection algorithm through the lake experiment.

  • It is not easy to monitor and identify all engine faults and conditions using conventional fault detection approaches like the GPA (Gas Path Analysis) method due to the nature and complexity of the faults. This study therefore focuses on a model based diagnostic method using Neural Network algorithms proposed for fault detection on a turbo shaft engine (PW 206C) selected as the power plant for a tilt rotor type unmanned aerial vehicle (Smart UAV). The model based diagnosis should be performed by a precise performance model. However component maps for the performance model were not provided by the engine manufacturer. Therefore they were generated by a new component map generation method, namely hybrid method using system identification and genetic algorithms that identifies inversely component characteristics from limited performance deck data provided by the engine manufacturer. Performance simulations at different operating conditions were performed on the PW206C turbo shaft engine using SIMULINK. In order to train the proposed BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network), performance data sets obtained from performance analysis results using various implanted component degradations were used. The trained NN system could reasonably detect the faulted components including the fault pattern and quantity of the study engine at various operating conditions.

  • A sensor fault detection method for small turbo shaft engine considering multiple trim conditions is proposed. This engine is used in a helicopter. Firstly, under multiple trim conditions, we derive the linearized models from a nonlinear model which includes engine, rotor and feedback control loop. As a fault detection method, we adopt the Kalman filter based method. To keep continuity of estimates between the changes of trim conditions, we reconfigure the initial values of state variables at trim changes. We detect the faults with two steps that when the first filter does not alarm the faults for some sensors, the second filter is runned for other sensor. Via some simulations we show that the proposed method works well under multiple trim conditions.

  • This paper focuses on monitoring and predicting the short circuit faults of the rotor windings of large turbo-generator systems. For the purpose of increasing efficiency and decreasing maintenance cost, a method that combines the HHT (Hilbert Huang Transform) with a wavelet has been studied. This method is based on analyzing a classical Albright detecting coil. Due to the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) of the HHT the exact location of a short circuit of rotor windings may be given. However, a part of the useful information is eliminated by the unreasonable decomposing scale of the wavelet. Based on the thermodynamics modeling method, this study was illustrated with a 50MW turbo-generator system that is installed in Northern China. The analysis results, which have very good agreement with those of a previous study, show that the method of combining the HHT with a wavelet is an effective way to analyze and predict the short circuit faults of the rotor windings of large generators, such as supercritical turbo-generator systems and wind turbo-generator systems. This work can offer a useful reference for analyzing smart grids by improving the power quality of a distribution network that is supplied by a turbo-generator system.

  • In recent digital communication systems, the performance of Turbo Code used as the error correction coding method depends on the interleaver size influencing the free distance determination and iterative decoding algorithms of the turbo decoder. However, some iterations are needed to get a better performance, but these processes require large time delay. Recently, methods of reducing the number of iteration have been studied without degrading original performance. In this paper, the new method combining ME (Mean Estimate) stopping criterion with SDR (sign difference ratio) stopping criterion of previous stopping criteria is proposed, and the fact of compensating each method's missed detection is verified Faster decoding realizes that reducing the number of iterative decoding about 1~2 times by adopting our proposed method into serially concatenation of both decoder. System Environments were assumed DS-CDMA forward link system with intense MAI (multiple access interference).

  • In wireless positioning systems using range measurements non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links cause estimation errors. Several studies have attempted to improve the positioning performance by mitigating these NLOS errors. These studies, however, have focused on the performance of a dataset consisting of three or more links. Therefore, measurement errors induced by links are averaged, and a reliable link is not fully utilized in the dataset. This paper proposes a Link Reliability based on Range Measurement (LRRM) scheme, which specifies the relative reliability of each link using residuals. The link reliability becomes the input to a Link Residual Weighting (LRW) scheme, which is also proposed as a weighted positioning scheme. Moreover, LRRM and LRW constitute new turbo positioning, where the estimation errors are reduced considerably by iterative updates.

  • In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (COMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) is considered In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical COMA network can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations in the decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the indoor optical wireless LANs.

  • Multi antenna techniques using space-time codes can achieve diversity gains in a multi-path environment without additional bandwidth requirement. Most of the 4G candidate standards including the IEEE 802.16e adopt multi-input multi-output (MIMO) schemes to achieve either high throughput performance or diversity gains. In these 4G candidate standards, turbo codes using an iterative decoder with soft input soft output are used to overcome serious channel fading. For this reason, the estimated signal values from MIMO detectors should be soft decision detection values. In this paper, we propose efficient methods to estimate soft decision detection values for various space time coding schemes, and provide the simulation results of turbo coded space time coding scheme over an IEEE 802.16e link.

  • We propose a new bandwidth-efficient technique that achieves high data rates over a wideband wireless channel. This new scheme is targeted for a multiple-input multiple- output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system that achieves transmit diversity through a space frequency block code and capacity enhancement through the iterative joint processing of zero-forcing detection and maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is compared to the coded Bell Labs Layered Space-Time OFDM (BLAST-OFDM) scheme.
