  • Recently the diameter of the 5MW wind turbine reaches 126m, and the tower height is nearly the same with the wind turbine diameter. The blade will experience periodic inflow oscillation due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region, that is, the inflow velocity is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. In this study we compare the aerodynamic data between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially My at hub and $F_x$, $M_y$, $M_z$ at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue load analysis.

  • A tested turbine consists of two stages, and an axial-type and a radial-type turbine are applied to the first and second stage, respectively. The mean diameter of the axial-type turbine rotor is 70 mm, and the outer diameter of the radial-type turbine is 68mm at the inlet. In this experiment, an axial-type turbine, two different radial-type turbines, and three different nozzle flow angles are applied to find the optimal design parameters. To compare the turbine performance, the net specific output torque is evaluated. The test results show that the nozzle flow angle on the first stage is a more important parameter than other design parameters for partially admitted small turbines to obtain high operating torque. For a 3.4% partial admission rate, the net specific output torque is increased by 13% with the addition of a radial-type rotor to the second stage when the turbine operates at $75^{\circ}$ nozzle flow angle.

  • This paper presents the effect of a grid system on the performance of a small Savonius wind turbine installed side-by-side. Turbine performance is compared using three different grid systems; tetrahedral grid having a concentrated circular grid around turbine rotors, the tetrahedral grid having a concentrated rectangular grid around turbine rotors and the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid. The commercial code, SC/Tetra has been used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis in the present study. The Savonius turbine rotor has a rotational diameter of 0.226m and an aspect ratio of 1.0. The distance between neighboring rotor tips keeps the same length of the rotor diameter. The variations of pressure and power coefficient are compared with respect to blade rotational angles and rotating frequencies of the turbine blade. Throughout the comparisons of three grid systems, it is noted that the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid has a stable performance compared to the other ones.

  • The finite element analysis of a micro turbine was made to investigate safety margin of its operating condition for the high aspect ratio nickel micro turbine blades fabricated by conventional LIGA-like method. From our study, we found that the fabricated turbine could not exceed its yield strength even if the pressure difference between inlet and outlet of turbine blade was about 44kPa, and the correlation of friction coefficient and the maximum stress, caused by contact friction between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of turbine blade, was somewhat reciprocal. The maximum stress was decreased with the increasing contact friction, when turbine blade was in its state of rotation. By the results of our study, we conclude that it is possible to fabricate metal micro turbine more easily han surface micromachining technology and to operate with no risk of metal structure's damage, which is caused by yield strength, if the operating condition with the design of micro turbine itself are optimized. It is useful to adopt other applications which have the contact problems between a moving part and the fixed one in micro structures.

  • Thermal and nuclear power plants on shore commonly use the sea water for cooling facility. Discharged cooling water has the high kinematic energy potential due to amount of water flux. Numerical analysis was made to find the suitable combinations between the arrangement of tidal turbines and the overall dimensions of the discharged channel. Several parameters such as the turbine diameter to inlet size, and the axial distance to turbine size were investigated. Power coefficients for various test conditions were also compared to see the effect of inlet configurations such as single inlet and dual inlet. For the single inlet, the mean power coefficient appeared to be gradually decreased with increasing distance, and the maximum power was obtained when the turbine diameter was same as the inlet diameter. For the dual inlet, the tendency was similar so that the better result when the turbine diameter was same as the inlet diameter. It is expected that the present methodology can be extensively utilized to harness the high kinetic energy flow of the discharge channel of power plant.

  • The structure of sprays from a simplex type pilot nozzle atomizer is studied experimentally by measuring velocities, Sauter mean diameter, and number density. Interaction of the spray with gas-phase flow field generated from a 1 MW range industrial gas turbine combustor adopt ing a counter-swirler is investigated. Various spray behaviors are reported. Especially interest ing characteristics are the tangential motion of the spray and of the spray with swirl interaction. It shows a Rankine combined vortex type of velocity characteristics, having linear velocity profile inside the inner core whole small particles exist and rapidly decreasing velocity profiles outside. Interacting spray has relatively uniform number density profiles compared to the nozzle spray itself.

  • Since MEMS based micro actuators or generating devices showed high efficiency per volume, plenty of research are ongoing. Among them, MEMS based millimeter-scale micro gas turbine is one of the most powerful item for replacing chemical batteries. However, due to MEMS manufacturing technique, it is very difficult that makes wide turbine bearing area. It causes low DN number, so sufficient bearing force is hard to achieve. Thus, the most important issue on micro gas turbine is to design the proper bearing which can keep rotor stable during operation. In order to that, micro-scale gas-lubricated bearing is generally used. In this paper, basic feasibility study of thrust bearing of 10mm diameter turbine is described. Thrust bearing is hydrostatic gas-lubricated type. Numerical simulation is performed with ANSYS CFX 11.0 which is commercial numerical tool. Relationship between bearing inlet pressure and mass flow rate and bearing force is figured while changing bearing gap and number of capillaries. The simulation results will be used for further design of micro gas turbine.

  • A multi-MW wind turbine is a huge mechanical structure, of which the rotor diameter is more or less than 100 m. Rotor blades experience unsymmetric mechanical loads caused by the interaction of incoming wind with the tower and wind shear effect. These mechanical loads are transferred to the entire structure of the wind turbine and are known as the major reasons for shortening the life span of the wind turbine. Therefore, as the size of wind turbine gets bigger, the mitigation of mechanical loads becomes more important issue in wind turbine control system design. In this paper, a concept of an individual pitch control(IPC), which minimizes the mechanical loads of rotor blades, is introduced, and simulation results using IPC are discussed.

  • The diameter of the rotor of 2MW wind turbine is being developed by a number of companies with more than 80m, reliability and economic efficiency of the wind power generator has been improved. The need for large-scale wind turbine with excellent economy has been attracting attention because the new orders and the location of the wind turbine market has reached a limit. Technology development for enlargement of wind turbine is possible not only the improvement of energy efficiency but also reduce the construction costs per unit capacity. However, mechanical gearboxes used in wind generators have problems of wear, damage, need for lubrication oil and maintenance. Therefore, we want to configure the gearbox of a large-scale wind turbine using a magnetic gear in order to solve these problems of mechanical gearbox.
