  • Nowadays high-cost energy storage system using flywheel or secondary battery is applying to hybrid generation system with WT(Wind Turbine) and diesel generator in island areas for stable operation. This paper proposes an operating algorithm and modeling method of the hybrid generation system that can operate for variable wind speed and load, which is composed of energy storage system, variable-speed PMSG(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) WT and diesel generator applied in island areas. Initially, the operating algorithm was proposed for frequency and voltage to be maintained within the proper ranges for load and wind speed changes. Also, the modeling method is proposed for variable speed PMSG WT, diesel generator and BESS(Battery Energy Storage System). The proposed operating algorithm and modeling method were applied to a typical island area. The frequency and voltage was kept within the permissible ranges and the proposed method was proven to be appropriate through simulations.

  • This paper shows operating characteristics of DFIG(Double Fed Induction Generator) for wind turbine. The back to back PWM voltage-fed inverter connected between the rotor and grid network operated sub and super-synchronous operating mode, and the vector-controlled DFIG enables the decoupling between active and reactive power as well as between torque and power factor. This paper is validated by simulations and experimental results.

  • The ELectromagnetic Core Imperfection Detector (EL-CID) test was performed on a small generator in the laboratory and a gas turbine generator in the field to assess the fault condition of generator stator core. Artificial defects with six different sizes were introduced in the small generator. The scan results on six defects show a very large increase in the magnitude of fault current compared to that obtained with a healthy core. After the stator core heats up, a thermal imaging camera was used to detect hot spot on the inner surface of the core for comparison. Several faults were found during inspection of the gas turbine generator with the EL-CID. It has been shown that the existence of a fault can be determined by monitoring the magnitude of fault current.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 10ton$_{f}$ in thrust with RP-1/Lox propellant. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching required by turbopump system. Design variables were selected as total mass flow rate to gas generator, O/F ratio in gas generator, turbine injection angle, partial admission ratio, and turbine rotational speed. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. Also, the combustion test was conducted to evaluate the performance of injector and combustion chamber. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.r.

  • In this paper, a wind turbine with power splitting transmission, which is realized through a novel three-shaft planetary, is presented. The input shaft of the transmission is driven by the rotor of the wind turbine, the output shaft is connected to the grid via the main generator (asynchronous generator), and the third shaft is driven by a control motor with variable speed. The dynamic models of the sub systems of this wind turbine, e.g. the rotor aerodynamics, the drive train dynamics and the power generation unit dynamics, were given and linearized at an operating point. These sub models were integrated in a multidisciplinary dynamic model, which is suitable for control syntheses to optimize the utilization of wind energy and to reduce the excessive dynamic loads. The important dynamic behaviours were investigated and a wind turbine with a soft main shaft was recommend.

  • It is impossible to predict accurately the dynamic behavior of turbine-generator system because bearing, and rotor characteristics are nonlinear and different from temperature, load, operation speed and bearing lubricant oil property. Especially, the characteristics of turbine hoods affect much the entire vibration characteristics of turbine. As the dynamic stiffness of turbine hoods are changed, the critical speeds of rotor are shifted. In this paper, the vibration behavior of turbine-generator is analyzed by using component mode synthesis and the critical speeds measured during shut-down are compared with the analytic results. It is confirmed that the 1st natural frequency and the mode shape are well in agreement with actual measured data.

  • The dynamic behavior of a single-pressure heat recovery steam generator and turbine system for the combined cycle power plant is simulated on the basis of one-dimensional unsteady governing equations. A water level control and a turbine power control are also included in the calculation routine. Transient response of the system to the variation of gas turbine exit condition is simulated and effect of the turbine power control on the system response is examined. In addition, the effect of the treatment of inertia terms(fluid inertia and thermal inertia of heat exchanger metal) on the simulated transient response is investigated.

  • Recently, high-cost energy storage systems are applying to hybrid generation systems with wind turbine and diesel generator in island areas for stable operation. But, this paper proposes an operating algorithm and modeling method of an islanding microgrid that is composed of PMSG(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and Diesel Generator applied in island areas without such energy storage system. Initially, the operating algorithm was proposed for frequency and voltage to be maintained within the proper ranges for the load and weather change. And then the modeling method were proposed for PMSG, WT-side AC/DC converter and Grid-side DC/AC converter. The proposed operating algorithm and modeling method were applied to a typical islanded microgrid with PMSG wind turbine and diesel generator. • The margin of transient stability of a weak grid system is very low because of the small short-circuit ratio and large impedance. If the fault of the weak grid is cleared by the protection system, one of the major lines is disconnected after the fault is cleared. This further reduces the system strength. Therefore, it is necessary that a new generation system be added to the weak grid to enhance the transient stability margin. A conventional synchronous generator and wind turbine generator were added to a base grid system. The results of transient stability analysis with additional generators using PSSE were compared. The simulations showed that wind turbine generators provide good damping performance and enhance the transient stability margin based on CCT up to 5 times.

  • A computation routine, capable of performing thermal design analysis of the triple-pressure bottoming system (heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine) of combined cycle power plants, is developed. It is based on thermal analysis of the heat recovery steam generator and estimation of its size and steam turbine power. It can be applied to various parametric analyses including optimized design calculation. This paper presents analysis results for the effects on the design performance of heat exchanger arrangements at intermediate and high temperature parts as well as steam pressures. Also examined is the effect of steam sources for deaeration on design performance.
