High efficient steam turbine stage has been developed with the help of the 3-dimensional design tool. In this stage design, the compound leaned stacking method has been adopted to reduce the secondary flow loss of a turbine passage and to increase the performance efficiency for the turbine nozzles. And the turbine buckets have been designed with the quasi-3-dimensional turbomachinery blade design method. To verify the stage design, therefore, the 3-dimensional numerical simulation of a steam turbine stage was conducted. In this design, CFX-TASCflow was employed to predict the turbulent flow of a steam turbine stage. The analysis was performed in parallel calculation using the HP N4000 8 CPUs machine. The result showed CFX-TASCflow could be used as the 3-dimensional flow analysis tool of steam turbine design.
There have been many academic researches on the aerodynamic design of wind turbine based on blade element method (BEM) and momentum theory (MT, or actuating disk theory). However, in the real world, the turbine blade design requires many additional constraints more than theoretical analysis. The standard procedure is studied in the present paper to design new blades for the wind turbine system ranged from the small size from 1 to 10 kW. From the experience of full design of a 10 kW blade, the authors tried to set up a standard procedure for the aerodynamic design based on IEC 61400-2. Wind-turbine scale, rotating speed, and geometrical chord/twist distribution at the segmented span positions are calculated with a suitable BEM/MT code, and the geometrical shape of tip and root should be modified after considering various parameters: wing-tip vortex, aerodynamic noise, turbine efficiency, structural safety, convenience of fabrication, and even economic factor likes price, etc. The evaluated data is passed to the next procedure of structural design, but some of them should still be corresponded with each other: the fluid-structure interaction is one of those problems not yet solved, for example. Consequently, the design procedure of small wind-turbine blades is set up for the mass production of commercial products in this research.

The pump-turbine impeller is the key component of pumped storage power plant. Current design methods of pump-turbine impeller are private and protected from public viewing. Generally, the design proceeds in two steps: the initial hydraulic design and optimization design to achieve a balanced performance between pump mode and turbine mode. In this study, the 3D inverse design method is used for the initial hydraulic impeller design. However, due to the special demand of high performance in both pump and reverse mode, the design method is insufficient. This study is carried out by modifying the geometrical parameters of the blade which have great influence and need special consideration in obtaining the high performance on the both modes, such as blade shape type at low pressure side (inlet of pump mode, outlet of turbine mode) and the blade lean at blade high pressure side (outlet of pump mode, inlet of turbine mode). The influence of the geometrical parameters on the performance characteristic is evaluated by CFD analysis which presents the efficiency and internal flow results. After these investigations of the geometrical parameters, the criteria of designing pump-turbine impeller blade low and high sides shape is achieved.

This research proposes a wind-lens turbine design that can startup and operate at a low wind speed (< 5m/s). The performance of the wind-lens turbine was investigated using CFD and wind tunnel testing. The wind-lens turbine consists of a 3-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine with a diameter of 0.6m and a diffuser-shaped shroud that uses the suction side of the thin airfoil SD2030 as a cross-section profile. The performance of the 3-bladed wind-lens turbine was then compared to the two-bladed rotor configuration while keeping the blade geometry the same. The 3-bladed wind-lens turbine successfully startup at 1m/s and produced a torque of 66% higher than the bare turbine, while the two-bladed wind-lens turbine startup at less than 4m/s and produced a torque of 186 % higher than the two-bladed bare turbine at the design point. Findings testify that adding the wind-lens could improve the bare turbine's performance at low wind speed.
Losses on the turbine consist of the mechanical loss, tip clearance loss, secondary flow loss and blade profile loss etc.,. More than 60 % of total losses on the turbine is generated by the two latter loss mechanisms. These losses are directly related with the reduction of turbine efficiency. In order to provide a new design methodology for reducing losses and increasing turbine efficiency, a two-dimensional axial-type turbine blade shape is modified by the optimization process with two-dimensional compressible flow analysis codes, which are validated by the experimental results on the VKI turbine blade. A turbine blade profile is selected at the mean radius of turbine rotor using on a heavy duty gas turbine, and optimized at the operating condition. Shape parameters, which are employed to change the blade shape, are applied as design variables in the optimization process. Aerodynamic, mechanical and geometric constraints are imposed to ensure that the optimized profile meets all engineering restrict conditions. The objective function is the pitchwise area averaged total pressure at the 30% axial chord downstream from the trailing edge. 13 design variables are chosen for blade shape modification. A 10.8 % reduction of total pressure loss on the turbine rotor is achieved by this process, which is same as a more than 1% total-to-total efficiency increase. The computed results are compared with those using 11 design variables, and show that optimized results depend heavily on the accuracy of blade design.
A procedure for the prediction of the off-design performance of a gas turbine engine is proposed. The system performance at off-design speed is predicted by coupling the thermodynamic models of a compressor and a turbine. The off-design performance of a compressor is obtained using the stage-stackimg method, while the Ainlay-Mathieson method is used for a turbine. The procedure is applied to a single-shaft gas turbine and its predictability is found satisfactory. The results also show that the net work output increases with the increase of the turbine inlet temperature, while the thermal efficiency is marginal. The maximum thermal efficiency at design point is obtained between the highest pressure ratio and design pressure ratio.
The turbine industry demands a reliable design with affordable cost. As technological advances begin to support turbines of huge sizes, and the increasing importance of wind turbines from day to day make design safety conditions more important. Wind turbines are exposed to environmental conditions that can affect their installation, durability, and operation. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61400-1 design load cases consist of analyses involving wind turbine operating conditions. This design load cases (DLC) is important for determining fatigue loads (i.e., forces and moments) that occur as a result of expected conditions throughout the life of the machine. With the help of FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence), an open source software, the NREL 5MW land base wind turbine model was used. IEC 61400-1 wind turbine design standard procedures assessed turbine behavior and fatigue damage to the tower base of dynamic loads in different design conditions. Real characteristic wind speed distribution and multi-directional effect specific to the site were taken into consideration. The effect of these conditions on the economic service life of the turbine has been studied.
A turbopump system composed of two pumps and one turbine is considered. The turbine composed of a nozzle and a rotor is used to drive the pumps while gas passes through the nozzle, potential energy is converted to kinematic energy, which forces the rotor blades to spin. In this study, an aerodynamic design of turbine system is investigated using compressible fluid dynamic theories with some pre-determined design requirements (i.e., pressure ratio, rotational speed, required power etc.) obtained from liquid rocket engine (L.R.E.) system design. For simplicity of turbine system, impulse-type rotor blades for open type L.R.E. have been chosen. Usually, the open-type turbine system requires low mass flow rate compared to close-type system. In this study, a partial admission nozzle Is adopted to maximize the efficiency of the open-type turbine system. A design methodology of turbine system has been introduced. Especially, partial admission nozzle has been designed by means of simple empirical correlations between efficiency and configuration of the nozzle. Finally, a turbine system design for a 10 ton thrust level of L.R.E is presented.
The radial turbine has been successfully applied to the systems which request relatively small output compared with the axial turbine, and has low manufacturing cost due to it's small size and simple structure. Recently, the researches on the development and the efficiency maximization of the radial turbine are in progress corresponding with the trend toward miniaturization in turbo machinery and the development of small dispersed power generation systems. The radial turbine is to be applied to our turbo refrigerator of which engine speed is 26,000 rpm and turbine efficiency is $88\%$. Also, as a heat exchanger is accepted instead of a combustor in our turbo refrigerator, the design of radial turbine has been performed to be appropriate to the circumstance of low temperature air, not high temperature combustor gas, into the turbine inlet . This radial turbine is being developed in consideration with not only the aero-dynamic performance but also the simplification of manufacturing and integration, and the durability at operating condition. This paper refer to the performance evaluation about the radial turbine design by comparison with consulting from Russia and the our evaluation about various design factors which are considered in aero-dynamic design process.

In this study, the validity of reducing the number of gas turbine stages designed for a nitrogen Brayton cycle coupled to a sodium-cooled fast reactor was assessed. The turbine performance was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations under different off-design conditions controlled by a reduced flow rate and reduced rotational speed. Two different multistage gas turbines designed to extract almost the same specific work were selected: two- and three-stage turbines (mid-span stage loading coefficient: 1.23 and 1.0, respectively). Real gas properties were considered in the CFD simulation in accordance with the Peng-Robinson's equation of state. According to the CFD results, the off-design performance of the two-stage turbine is comparable to that of the three-stage turbine. Moreover, compared to the three-stage turbine, the two-stage turbine generates less entropy across the shock wave. The results indicate that under both design and off-design conditions, increasing the stage loading coefficient for a fewer number of turbine stages is effective in terms of performance and size. Furthermore, the Ellipse law can be used to assess off-design performance and increasing exponent of the expansion ratio term better predicts the off-design performance with a few stages (two or three).
