  • In order to release the pressure fluctuations and micro-pressure wave induced by the entering of train into the small cross sectional tunnel, it has been reported that the construction of air shaft has more advantages with respect to economy and constructability than the enlargement of cross section of existing tunnel. The field monitorings and analytical studies were conducted simultaneously in this study to analyze the mechanical behavior of existing railway tunnel, new cross tunnel and new shaft by the construction of new shaft nearby. The results showed that the minimum distance from existing tunnel to new shaft which secures the stability of existing tunnel was found to be half diameter of existing tunnel. On the three dimensional mechanical behavior of existing tunnel by the construction of new shaft, the results from the analytical study and field monitoring had a similar trend. The analytical study and field monitoring results, however, produced somewhat different results on the mechanical behavior of new shaft itself. These conclusions induce that the analytical method which has been applied on the analyses of horizontal tunnel could not be applied in the same way on the analysis of vertical shaft.

  • To investigate the behavior of air-shaft and existing tunnel by excavating the small-diameter shaft into the existing tunnel, prototype air-shaft was constructed and analyzed in this study. Geotechnical characterization was conducted by boring and rock cores obtained were tested in the laboratory. Field monitoring including radial and tangential stresses and displacements was conducted with the 3-dimensional numerical analysis of prototype air-shaft. Results of field monitoring were compared with the numerical results. The results showed that maximum displacement of 2.11mm and maximum tangential stress of 54.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were obtained during shaft excavation near the right shoulder of the existing tunnel. The comparison of these field measurements with 3-dimensional numerical analysis showed that much more higher stress was measured during excavation compared to the numerical results even though the trends of stress and displacement were similar.

  • The present paper concerns a smoke movement in a tunnel fire with a vertical shaft. The model tunnel measured 13.4m long, 0.4m wide and 0.4m high. The cross section is 1: 20 of a full scale tunnel. Ethanol was used as a fuel. The fire size in model tests varied from 1.35 kW to 13.37 kW, which corresponds to full scale fires of 2.41 to 23.91 MW. Smoke front velocity and temperatrue were decreased due to the vertical shaft install. Temperature was reduced maximum about 2$0^{\circ}C$ at ceiling and about 23$^{\circ}C$ at vertical position. CO concentration was reduced as the vent width widened. When vent width was more than 15 cm, CO concentration was not reached 100 ppm. Descent degree of the smoke layer was confirmed through the visualization.

  • In August 2002, side wall of OO tunnel, at the Bonghwa, Kungbuk province, Korea, was collapsed by abruptly applied heavy soil and water pressure to side wall from a inclined shaft when there was a heavy rain. These days, Inclined shaft is used for the purpose of reducing construction time, using ventilation system, using the out of carrying equipment and mucking when we construct tunnel in the world. Recently constructed tunnel has the source of inclined shafts, but the more time elapse, we lose the source of the inclined shaft such as exact position, condition, and the fact that whether inclined shaft is exist or not. Therefore, this study inspected the interior's appearance, analyzed structure to evaluate the reason of collapsing side wall and this study also performed the repairing work. Finally, we show improving maintenance method to prevent that similar accident that might be happened.

  • 3D time history analysis was performed on vertical shaft-tunnel connection to provide insight into the dynamic stress-strain behavior of the connection considering the effects of soil layers, periodic characteristics and wave direction of earthquakes. MIDAS GTS NX based on FEM (Finite Element Method) was used for this study. From this study, it is revealed that the maximum displacement occurred at the upper part of the connection when the long period seismic waves propagate through the tunnel direction in soft ground. Also, stress concentration occurs due to different behaviors of vertical shaft and tunnel, and the stress concentration could be influence for safety on the connection. The results of this study could be useful for the seismic performance design of vertical shaft-tunnel connection.

  • In this study, smoke movement in tunnel fire with natural ventilation shaft has been investigated with various size of fire source. Gasoline pool fire with different size of diameter - 73mm, 100mm, 125mm and 154mm - was used to describe fire source. Experimental data is obtained with 1/20 model tunnel test and its results are compared with numerical results. The computation were carried out using FDS 1.0 which is a field model of fire-driven now. Temperature profiles between measured and predicted data are compared along ceiling and near the ventilation shaft. Both results are in good agreement with each other. In order to evaluating a safe egress time in tunnel fire, horizontal smoke front velocity was measured in model tunnel fire tests and those are compared with numerical results. According to the presence or absence of natural ventilation shaft, ventilation effect are estimated quantitatively. Finally, this paper shows that computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applicable to predict fire-induced flow in tunnel.

  • In this paper, numerical method was calculated on evaluation of underground ventilation system to keep servicing a fresh air. The tunnel length for simulation is 18.2 km with various located seven ventilation shaft. Generally, owing to thermal generation in cable tunnel under about 50 m depths, cable tunnel ventilation system is more important than that of other tunnels. So, we conducted that the effects of ventilation systems was simulated depending on the difference of electrical power tunnel length, the number of shaft tunnel, forced ventilation and duct was or not. Test results show that the main conditions in order to enhance the underground cable tunnel are that ventilation systems have to be designed with forced ventilation and with duct.

  • High speed railway can transport large quantity of people and commodities in a short time and has become one of the most desirable and environmentally friendly transportation. However, it is hard to have a complicated route for high speed railways, construction of tunnels is essential to pass through a mountain area. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, pressure wave is created in a tunnel and the wave causes micro pressure wave and discomfort to passengers. In order to alleviate pressure wave in a tunnel, constructing a vertical shaft is one of the most efficient ways. This study represents a numerical analysis module, which takes into account the effect of a vertical shaft in a tunnel. The module can be used in a numerical program (TTMA) specialized for aerodynamics in a tunnel, and it was validated by comparing numerical results with various measurements in Emmequerung tunnel and results from numerical analysis using Fluent.

  • Experimental studies are made of the characteristics of turbulent flow around the propeller shaft in Cavitation Tunnel using a 2-component LDV system. First the flow uniformity and turbulence levels at the test section are measured. The turbulent boundary layer around the propelle shaft and the wakes behind the propeller shaft are also measured. It is shown that the former represents the general turbulent boundary layer around the propeller shaft but the latter represents the complicated flows behind it.

  • In order to investigate the workability of Raise Boring Machine(RBM) such as utilization, penetration rate and advance rate, a vertical shaft of 98 m in length and 3.05 m in diameter was constructed in the layer of conglomerate by using the RBM in this study. In addition, field data from tow different construction sites including water-pump power plant tunnel, roadway tunnel and mining tunnel by RBM were collected and analyzed. The results show that the average weekly bored length is 19.3 m and its average utilization is between 54.3 % and 75.1 % very higher than that of the TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine). It also turns out that the bit force increases linearly with respect to the increase of the RPM(revolution per minute) of RBM. However, the net penetration rate decreases with the increase of bit force, RPM of RBM and depth of shaft. The findings of this study can be used to provide the useful information for the design of shaft and the selection of RBM.
